Rock Band's last track will be 'American Pie'

Don McLean's classic track to see out Rock Band's long-running DLC.

by

The final downloadable track for Harmonix's Rock Band series will be "American Pie" by Don McLean.

Harmonix made the announcement (via Polygon) as part of The Harmonix Rock Band Party at gaming trade show PAX East.

"American Pie," which was originally released in 1971, will reach Rock Band on April 2 as part of the game's final update.

More than 4,000 tracks have been released for the game series over 275 weeks.

"We're incredibly proud of the DLC milestones we've set, especially producing the largest music library of any game available, and we wouldn't have been able to release as much outstanding content without the support of our amazing community," wrote Harmonix in February.

Surely Rock Band aren't stopping COMPLETELY. They've got to make more songs sometime...

I play fairly often, I mostly play the drums but I still pick up the guitar for a song or two when I'm done. I will continue playing for a long time, people criticize "Oh fake guitar, stupid", for me it's that it's a game and it's fun to play and while I'm at it I get to hear my favorite tunes :3

Hard to believe how quickly the instrument-based music genre came and went.  I have some great memories playing guitar hero and Rock Band with groups of friends.  I still remember, back in college, when I walked into my suite-mate's room and saw him playing with the original Guitar Hero on his PS2.  That started a love for a genre that didn't start to fade until one fateful night when I went to our gaming club and saw a group of girls hogging the tv, playing Beatles Rock Band, specifically songs from the acid years.  It soured the experience, and I never felt like playing again.  Still, I look back fondly on the genre, especially everything up to the first Rock Band.

I think I have close to 800 songs. I always find my self firing it up and buying a song or two. I will miss getting new music.

How could they wait this long to release American Pie? It's an amazing song.

now release all that content into a massive collectors edition. So fans can spend hours selecting a single song!

Harmonix did a really good job keeping good songs coming out as DLC; I stopped playing long ago, but I'm still sad to see the new songs come to an end. Couldn't think of a better song to finish it off. Good on you, Harmonix.

Starting up again next year when Rock Band Next comes out! With you having to repurchase all previously bought songs for this next generation. :P

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn't play

And in the streets, the children screamed
The lovers cried and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken

And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died

And they were singin' bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"

Over 4000 songs and no Zeppelin :'(

Also, most DLC songs expensive... meaning 2 or even 3 dollars. I they were more affordable at 50 cents.

a fitting end to the epic amounts of dlc.

Since most of my plastic band gear is in storage, Ive been using this as a karaoke machine, which is actually quite awesome! They should have continued to release tracks under the moniker Rock Band Karaoke or something, and only need to include vocal tracks... Id still pay $1 a song

Thank you Harmonix, it's been a great ride. Here is hoping a new Rock Band hits next gen systems. Fingers crossed!

Maybe i missed it, but has anyone come up with a cost if someone were to have bought the full game and all its DLC??   i just wonder how much that would run someone... same for that Guitar Hero game...

I have always hated that song, it's so lame and melodramatic.  Whenever I see people sing it, they look foolish trying to be so deeply emotional.   It's fitting for Rock Band.

@Kraken422 American Pie was part of Band Hero, an Activision game. Probably the owners of the song have signed some contract with Activision, and now it's expired... then, Harmonix/EA got the song.

@somebody337 Yeah, fuck all the people who were looking forward to new Rock Band content! I can't deal with scrolling through a few more things in the marketplace and I can't learn how to use that "search" thing!

@somebody337 really? you're going to complain about that when it's not their fault the store is cluttered, but the layout of the marketplace.

dlCHIEF58

@somebody337

Wrong boyo - Rock Band Network will still be putting out lower tier and indy groups for a while.  And then you have twice the clutter as official Harmonix releases since they have both trial and the actual DLC - and some even have a third option with double bass.

Don't blame Harmonix for that either, blame Microsoft as they screwed it all up when they released this new dashboard 2 years ago. Before then all the RBN songs only appeared in game or the Rock Band Store app. But these are still better than the spam from Capcom games for a million skins that should have been included in the game anyway.

@Xplode_77

LOL, really? Too expensive? A song from iTunes will cost you at least $1 and all you can do is listen to it. Two dollars is nothing for the songs you want to play in the game, and worth the extra dollar if you actually want to learn the guitar/bass parts if they are available for that song.

Crazyguy105
Crazyguy105

@Xplode_77  Blame Zeppelin's manager for that. I remember back when we requested those songs for RB2, either he came out or some members of the band said that they refused to let their songs be played on plastic instruments.

dlCHIEF58
dlCHIEF58

@Dentalflossbush

That would have been a good one as well (though not as good IMO). I was honestly hoping they would have pulled off the impossible and gotten "Stairway to Heaven" as a swan song (pun intended). But I had a strong feeling it was going to be "American Pie" since it was already licensed to Band Hero and was obviously available.

dlCHIEF58
dlCHIEF58

@DJKrayz_basic

Well it would cost a lot more to get all the RB3 songs as there are well over 4000 songs, most being $2 a piece. The RB2/1 era songs were reduced to $1 each (excluding RBN) recently so the cost would have come down since then. And that 4000+ songs does not include The Beatles DLC as that only worked in that game and consisted of 3 full albums, Sgt Peppers, Rubber Souls, and Abbey Road.

Guitar Hero lacked greatly in DLC and gave up quickly after the failure of  GH6 Warriors of Rock. Probably not over 100 DLC songs total for the entire Guitar Hero franchise.

That ought to give you a rough estimate without factoring in the license transfers for RB1, RB2, Lego RB, and AC/DC track pack (not available as DLC) to RB3.

@gatsbythepig I am pretty sure the vast majority of people don't even know what it's about. It was totally relevant and very emotional fifty years ago.

dlCHIEF58
dlCHIEF58

@Crazyguy105 @Xplode_77

Actually it is Jimmy Page that is to blame as he has control of the Zeppelin master recordings. And he initially did show disdain for the whole plastic instrument thing, but his attitude was softening when actual instruments were being introduced ala RB3 - just not enough and too late.

You blithering socially-rejected pile of moronic horse manure,it's about the end of an era (specifically "American innocence," as it were), that much is obvious. The most typically-referenced is the death of buddy holly (that's as it applied to mclean anyways.) but it's always open to interpretation.

Honestly, any blundering idiot with an online computer and a keyboard could have figured this out.
