Rock Band going on tour

MTV Games revs up the synergy machine for Harmonix's rhythm game with nationwide bus-based promotion, band battles, and TRL appearance.

When MTV bought Harmonix for $175 million last year, it was clear it would heavily promote the studio's first project with every arm of its media empire. When that project turned out to be Rock Band, a multi-instrument, karaoke-enhanced rhythm game, that became even more obvious. Then, when Viacom announced it planned to invest a half-billion dollars in its MTV Games unit, it appeared no expense would be spared on fine-tuning Rock Band's hype machine.

This week, in conjunction with the Summer Showcase of Rock Band's distributor, Electronic Arts, MTV Games announced the latest promotional offensive for the title. Like many actual rock bands before it, the game will embark on a cross-country bus tour. The orgy of synergy will begin at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas September 9, when several buses equipped with Rock Band demo stations will fan out across the country. Stops will include several college campuses.

MTV will also use the Rock Band bus tour to indulge in another rock-and-roll tradition, the battle of the bands. Every "band" that plays the game on the main stage will have its performance recorded, with the resulting video being sent back to the casting directors responsible for MTV's battery of reality shows. Of those, two groups will be flown to MTV's New York City headquarters to practice with an actual famous rock band before appearing on the network's popular TRL program. The winner of the two will then "open" for an unnamed top musical act by playing the game on stage during the Rock Band launch event/concert. Those who attend bus tour dates following Rock Band's still-unspecified "holiday" launch will obviously not be eligible.

Details about Rock Band bus tour venues can be found on the game's official Web site. A full list of dates is below.

I played Rock Band today. They were at my school at UNLV. The game is alot of fun and has alot of potential. It really will come down to buyers wanting to drop money on the equipment/game.

Interestingly enough, it seems that the tour may have started a little bit early, at least on the campus of UNLV (University of Nevada, Las Vegas). On my trek to my Rhetoric class, what do I spy, but a Rock Band van! It was just one copy of the game, and not the huge kiosk mentioned here, but, still, it was a ton of fun.

OK, stop worrying about the release date already.... "Those who attend bus tour dates following Rock Band's still-unspecified "holiday" launch will obviously not be eligible. " Seems Nov. 20th may not be set in stone, but I'm sure it'll be out before this tour ends.

I so wish I wouldn't have to hear about Guitar Hero and Rockband every day; I swear, I hope GameSpot is getting paid by MTV Games and Activision for all the advertising articles they're doing

I love how it just says "New Jersey." I suppose the stop hasn't been finalized yet, but why wouldn't it have been?

Well, I'm interested. Even though MTV sucks, as long as Harmonix is developing the game, I'm happy.

Going to the Cleveland one without a doubt, but it's lame that most of those appearances are before the game comes out. No practice for the drums, folks.

Nerds on TRL! All I can say is... represent us well. Yell something like "MTV sucks!" after then end of the song. Classic.

Cool, they are coming to Sac. Anyway, I am somewhat glad MTV is working on this game. Sure the network sucks. But really MTV has a ton of muscle when it comes to the music industry. Meaning we will have access to more songs.

StonyShred420

Its good to see there are plenty of other gamers out there going..."wait, WTF...What the heck is the MTV logo doing on a game of music." Thats right, because MTV (which stands for Music Television) doesn't even play music anymore. So does that mean with MTV basically owning Rock Band....that we won't even play music in rock band? Are we just going to be 1 of the members in a video game reality show? Honestly, im gonna get GH3 on release date, Rock Band, im hold off on. I have a huge feeling that MTV is going to ruin Harmonix work here.

OMG One of those things is finally coming to Brewtown!! Screw TRL, I just want to play.

Can't wait to finally try this game.

Lets see, yet another creative property MTV digs there claws into to ruin. Joy, just what we need more MTV then we already see. And I was wondering, why would MTV buy out something to do with music? We all know they don't play music.

TRL is still on MTV? I R confused! I thought TRL was a show of music videos.... MTV doesn't have that!

StonyShred420
StonyShred420

Screw MTV, everything they touch becomes ruined and dumbed down so the many morons in America, who flock to MTV, can understand whats going on. Can you see the average MTV watching girl picking up a Guitar and rocking out to old hard rock? We'll see, im not gonna totally rip on Rock Band before it comes out, but im predicting it already OVER HYPED and will sell what it does because of all the marketing it is getting, so GH3 will overal end up beating Rock Band in the battle for rock in video games this upcoming fall, again thats my prediction. I could end up being wrong, but im not usually wrong!

Calmed_Fury

OMG they are coming to Columbus right when OSU starts fall quarter!!! I am so excited!!!!!!!

Because this tour thing is running until the middle of December, does that mean the game won't be released until after that? I sure hope not, I'm itching to play that drum set.
