Robin Williams Tribute Discovered in WoW: Warlords of Draenor Beta

It looks as if the recently deceased actor will be memorialized in more than one way.

After Blizzard suggested it would memorialize Robin Williams in some way in World of Warcraft, fans have discovered several possible references to the actor, who recently passed away.

As reported by Wowhead, the ongoing beta for the next WoW expansion, Warlords of Draenor, contains several tributes to Williams. This includes a lamp that can be activated to summon a genie named Robin who says, "Infinite cosmic power!" followed by "Itty bitty living space" -- references to his role as the Genie in Aladdin. If you have beta access, you can find the lamp for yourself on an island located near Talador.

Another tribute is located nearby, where you'll find a broken egg with a light and other things inside, a reference to the egg-looking spaceship used by the aliens Williams played on Mork & Mindy. Wowhead reports an alternate version of Robin's character that is dressed in a way that bears some resemblance to Mork exists, but is not currently in the game.

Finally, there are some toys scattered on the ground that been interpreted as a possible reference to the movie Toys, and another version of the Robin NPC that is dressed like Mrs. Doubtfire. Like Mork, this character (pictured below) can't currently be found in the game world.

Williams passed away on August 11 of an apparent suicide. He was a fan of video games (his daughter is named Zelda), including World of Warcraft, hence the online petition (and Blizzard's subsequent decision) to memorialize him in-game. Warlords of Draenor launches on November 13.

Given that the genie in Aladdin actually says "Phenomenal Cosmic Power", not "Infinite Cosmic Power", if Blizzard are attempting to give Robin Williams an honest tribute, they should fix that up, if it's true...

I appreciate the acknowledgement of his being memorialized, but referencing his passing as "an apparent suicide" seems unnecessary. If it hasn't been confirmed I feel it's best left undiscussed.

I will admit I feel that way because I'm such a big fan of his that the possibility that he killed himself is really heart breaking and painful and I'm trying to distance myself from it. Still I think it's best to leave that alone unless it was confirmed to the public to be true.

Anyway, this is a nice thing they are doing. The "Toys" reference seems so obscure I'm kind of surprised they would reference that. I didn't think many people knew about that movie, although they did (not very long ago) talk about that movie on "How did this get made?" so I guess it has some recognition recently. In my opinion that's the weirdest movie in his filmography.

Since when did we glorify suicide? If you're gonna memorialize a man for his actions (film roles), why don't you take in account his most recent role...a selfish father and friend who was too chicken shlt to face life's obstacles and tried to cut his wrists with a pocket knife, only to fail and finally using his belt to hang himself like some scared 2-bit convict.

There are people dying of leukemia every day but they live each day till the disease finished them,

You're a real inspiration Robin.

Can we next get a Joan Rivers NPC that criticizes lame transmogs?

Death always comes really quickly. The hardest part is watching your loved ones age and pass before you. Let's hope whatever comes next is as unbelievable as this life has been.

Before death: Robin who?

After death: OMG MY FAVORITE ACTOR! I ALWAYS LOVED HIM!

Is it me or does it seem like references to Disney characters, no matter how iconic they are to their respective actors, feels more like a Disney reference than a reference to the actor?

I think they need something more direct. Adding that Mrs. Doubtfire NPC, hopefully speaking in a man's voice, heh, while dropping the odd funny line or two from Robin's previous roles strikes me as being the most appropriate. A few years from now younger players who don't know will just see the Disney references as only that while the Doubtfire NPC will clearly point to Robin because they'll wonder why a reference to this one movie matters so much.

@freedomzealot I can count a couple thousand people that signed the petition. A better question would be, if you didn't care, why are you even posting here?

@cornbredx Yeah I think I have to agree with Phooey here.  "An apparent suicide" is exactly, 100% what it is.

He loved to make people laugh and bring people joy, but that doesn't mean pretending that a important part of his life, of *most* lives, doesn't exist.  Sometimes all you need to do to give someone that spark of hope again is remind them that they're not alone, and even now that he's gone it's brought that little more attention to the fact that depression is not limited to just "small-time, worthless, unloved losers".  In this case *nothing* could be further from the truth, and that gives people comfort.

@cornbredx Don't distance yourself from reality. He wasn't the characters he played in movies. He was a deeply depressed man that spoke for years about his internal struggles and depression. Ignoring what he went through is exactly what he wouldn't want his legacy to be.

Robin Williams committed suicide due to having extremely severe depression. Depression is a serious mental illness which takes therapy and medication to address. Perhaps he should have sought more help and tried to fight through but unfortunately his disease/illness won. It was not a matter of him being weak, it was a matter of his disease/illness had become too strong for him to defeat.

He brought joy to an awful lot of people, including many charities and to his countries foreign stationed troops. He was an extremely generous and talented man who was involved in loads of memorable films which everyone loved. For that he should be remembered and memorialized. It is not a glorification of suicide... it is a celebration of his life.

Suicide is selfish no matter how you slice it. You guys wanna judge a guy on his actions like his movies and such bit don't wanna judge his selfish suicide. Hypocrites.

As insensitive and mean as he put it it's kinda true. I think everyone is so blinded by the lovable comedian and actor that they forgot the selfish human being that decimated the family and friends he left behind. Never mind the fact that Robin took away all future works from his fans. So what's worse, the act of suicide or the person speaking out against it?

@Gravity_Slave Despite the shitty nature of your comment (ha, Gamespot, I unfortunately expect nothing less from it's commenters) I just wanted to say you seemed to not understand the movie you're referencing ("Worlds greatest dad" for any one who doesn't know).

The son didn't kill himself with the belt on purpose. He was doing that sexual fetish where you hang yourself while *ahem*... you know what. Maybe you don't need to understand these things.

@drodriguesaar @wateva76 Means nothing. Disney owns the rights to that character so they would be more than happy to take their share of the profits for it no matter how noble a cause it was for Blizzard. So it's better for Blizzard to keep the peace.

I wasn't referencing a movie you idlot. That's how Williams really killed himself you twit. He cut his wrists, failed and hung himself. What's embarassing is Robin had experience in suicide with his movies and killed himself anyway. Do your research before running your mouth like you know something.

@cornbredx Good someone else saw that.  Easy to go to far. As people know who have done it.  Meaning the act part not the death part.  I think if everyone's life became public, meaning knowing everything they do and think it may freak some fans out.  We are some sick individuals.  News flash.  Everyone mast..........ok I should stop now.

It seems to be an attempt to impersonate the many people who only recognize people after they have died/love people after they have died: sarcastic response, which is completely unneeded. Hence the caps and differentiation between before and after.

Make fun as much as you want, but don't be an idiot and actually think he/she is being serious.
