Riot: League of Legends has 12 million daily 'active' players

Developer claims free-to-play online game is "most played video game in the world" with 70 million registered users, 32 million monthly active accounts; playerbase 90 percent male.

Riot Games has released a new infographic detailing usership figures for League of Legends, and claims the free-to-play online multiplayer title is the "most played video game in the world."

Riot claims League of Legends boasts 12 million daily "active" players, though it is not clear how the developer defines "active." Additionally, Riot said the game has 32 million monthly "active" accounts, and a total of 70 million registered users.

Not only does League of Legends boast an enviable playerbase, these gamers are playing together at a healthy clip. Riot said League of Legends boasts a peak concurrent player figure of 3 million. This number was derived from the average number of players simultaneously online during a "typical" day in July 2012.

Lastly, Riot said over 90 percent of League of Legends players are male, and 85 of total players are between the ages of 16 and 30. Additionally, the developer claims 60 percent are currently enrolled in college or have completed "some" college.

League of Legends has not been without controversy. During the World Playoffs recently, Riot Games investigated accusations of cheating during the $2 million tournament, and ended up finding the parties responsible and fining them $30,000. This money will be donated to charity.

Where do you see online player count in LOL in-game.

Dota 2 and HoN are showing the online amount, I'm not able to find anything like online player count in LOL Client.

When I see numbers in LOL public chat there are around 100-150 people on chat.. how's that possible? Why is that? Please explain.

P.S. Im asking cause I really don't know.

DoTA 2 isn't even completed yet and isn't available to everyone as it is. Even so, I see 100k players online at a given time. I think that's pretty impressive.

Meh, this game isn't that bad, it's just...... so boring. You have to play way too passive for my style of gaming. From what I saw in the 15 or so games I played before I quit, here's this game in the nut shell: Start out, pick a side to hold, you see an enemy, click 50 times all over your screen towards/away from the enemy. Finally work your way up to attack, fight for a total of 2 seconds, both back off, repeat the clicking and combat phase till the other ones runs away. You go to pursue, get stopped by the turrets. Back off and teleport back to base.  Heal, level up, new gear etc. Go back to where you were holding it down, see the same guy you fought, repeat every step for the majority of the game. I just don't see the hype about this game..... Am I playing it wrong lol?

That's a very big statement the developer makes, but i'm pretty sure Runescape has been out longer and has claimed the same thing. 90% male player base? Eww.

Free champions, more diverse heroes, more flexible meta game vs

Grinding for Champions, 90% of which are tanky dps, stale meta game.

Enjoy your crap LoL fans.

The community is always going to be bad in a game in which you rely on your team mates, it's no different in Dota 2, HoN, Smite or any other game like it.

It's all fake... They just play with words and numbers.

I'm sure that LoL boasts a large number of players, but don't forget to count in that nearly all of them have at LEAST 3-5 accounts that they regularly switch between to play due to a leave ban or any other similar reason.

...you can add one more to that member count, this game is one I can actually get behind to some degree.

I'd play LoL more if the community wasn't god awful.

Screw League of Legends, and screw Riot. Charging insane prices for overpowered characters and making everything grind-heavy killed the game for me (only summoner lvl 23).

Dota 2 offers you all the heroes for free, TF2's trading system, is more visually appealing, and has more unique characters to choose from.

Dota 2 > League of Legends.

i think they forgot that 72 teemo's die every second.... most important statistic posted.

12 Million People, 98 Percent of them a holes. Seriously I love the game and stuff but the community sucks. I also had the same problem when I used to play Warcraft 3 DOTA game and even now people are still a holes there.

It's just a fantastic game, and I think the free to play system they have set up is very fair. Normally I don't spend money on free to play games, but I play LoL so much and the game is so excellent that I felt compelled to fork over some cash, and did so. I've played Dota and Dota 2 as well. Those are good games but, for me, they seem to be lacking the "fun factor" of LoL. I think that's why those games aren't quite as popular.

nice 12 million, I'm one of them i play every day few hours, Better than dota,2 if you ask me i play both, Lol is good game but Community is Pain in a.... most times like in every popular game.

Yeah, 'Riot' indeed. I'm just glad, as I said, that something useful was done with the worthwhile elements of Warcraft 3 beyond the all-too transitory-RTS prison in which they were mired.

It's very popular, but unfortunately, I don't think the community is very welcoming....it's full of a lot of douchebaggery.

85% between the ages of 16-30? 60% have upper education? HAH! I'm far from an elitist, but dude, League of Legends consists of the most immature crowd that I've ever seen. Yes, it is even worse than playing Halo with 12 year olds.

@b2bwild

You cant put hundreds of people in 1 Chat. I know that LoL has a huge number of Players. So many friends of me and people around me playin it. So i trust Riot, but a function where you can see the online amount would be nice yep.

@GamerMani Besides dota 2 is in beta and has not been released yet!! it can be bought for $30 and yet the player base spiked max is at 114,000 a t agiven time that I see!! you can not compare the stats now and wait for it to release when it will be free to play!! lot of players will jump ship!!

adilejaz
adilejaz

@GamerMani I am a fan of both games!! akali my main in LoL and Bloodseeker in Dota 2!! but trust me dude make up all the figures you want but it can not change the fact that Dota 2 is a lot better than LoL!! Definitely the game is more difficult than LoL but it is very much fun!!

Soundaholic92
Soundaholic92

@GamerMani I won't compare the gameplay, but it's true that LoL was released at a very strategic time when DotA (or WC3) graphics and UI were starting to get really outdated. DotA 2 came out way late IMO, it would have captured a lot of what is now LoL's player base if it had come out earlier

Azghouls

@SolidTy Did you play it? Cause I was interested in this game however if you state is true, then I give it a miss.

cephas90

@Tzap I think you misconstrue that 60% statistic.  Gamespot reported that 60% was in college or had "some" college.  "Some" college is a  very... flexible term.  I play league almost daily, and I agree, LoL has the WORST, and I mean WORST community of ANY online game (and I've played alot) that I've ever been a part of.  That said, college doesn't always necessarily imply maturity.  Sadly, my generation is an extremely morally devoid bunch that seeks self gratification above all.  I'm generalizing, of course.

colt_a
colt_a

@Tzap You vastly overestimate the maturity of older people / college students.

If you've ever been to college, you'd know that.

SolidTy
SolidTy

@Azghouls

Yes, I did play it. I have it installed as we speak.

There are 12 million daily active players, and it feels like 11 million of them are d***heads.

LOL utilizes both free-to-play and freemium models, the game is supported by microtransactions rather than ads or boxed copy sales.

So,it should cost you nothing to check it out, but that is also probably why so many d***heads are there as well.

Twilleppac
Twilleppac

@cephas90  @Tzap Worse than Maple Story? I seriously doubt that it's the "worst" community of any online game...

aryeec

@colt_a  @Tzap I'd say the greater percent of real college students aren't how you are implying.

Tzap
Tzap

@colt_a I've just now realized that you've been defending this game down to the soul throughout this entire comment section.

Good for you, I'd like to find a game that i'd put down my spine down for someday. I did beta test for LoL, I did play it on release, just wasn't my crowd man.

Now, like most other recent college graduates, I'm going to go look for a job in a market that doesn't hire recent college graduates. Cheers to that!

Tzap
Tzap

The only thing I vastly overestimate is the intelligence of, well, to be kind, a person like you ;p

I've been to 5 different colleges (by choice), conquered..... and now i can't believe I'm even responding to this. Amazing what a hangover can do to a person.

TheClown24
TheClown24

@SolidTy  @Azghouls The issue with the community is that you're reliant on your team mates, so therefore they get angry when you screw up etc, it's the same for all games in this style. Imo MOBAs (LoL, Dota 2, Smite, etc) are only at their best when played with a group of friends as a 5, then they become something special.

RoadStar1602
RoadStar1602

@SolidTy  @Azghouls This is, unfortunately, a true statement. A lot of people act very childish and unbelievably rude and disrespectful, but that's the internet for you. They feel safe behind their anonymity to say whatever they want. There are so many keyboard-jockey tough guys. I've got my ignore button on a hair-trigger. I find that to be the best way to handle things. Riot has also implemented a reporting system that should help things over the long-term.
