Riddick demo assaults Xbox Live

Taster of sequel to Escape From Butcher Bay is now available for download on Xbox Live; PSN demo coming later this month.

Atari today announced that a demo of the upcoming The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is coming to Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. The follow-up to The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay, Dark Athena is being developed by Starbreeze Studios, the Swedish outfit behind The Darkness and Enclave.

The events in Dark Athena take place immediately after Escape From Butcher Bay, which debuted to glowing reviews in 2004. After drifting through space in a cryostatic state, Riddick and bounty hunter Johns are picked up by the titular vessel. The demo features the Athena Main Decks level and lets players sample the Ulak melee combat and drone control, as well as get a sneak peek at one of the game's cutscenes.

The demo is now available for download on Xbox Live, and the PlayStation 3 version is set to appear later this month. Assault on Dark Athena will arrive at retailers on April 7 in North America and on April 24 in Europe.

Regarding the demo: once I reaquainted myself with the general gameplay mechanics & control scheme of Riddick (very similar to that in the excellent Escape from Butcher Bay), my enjoymment factor of the demo increased quite significantly. Gameplay Tips: for those new to the gameplay mechanics, I suggest the following - the new 'lean' function, especially being able to shoot whilst leaning out from cover, even when you're on a level above your enemies (as can be done towards the end of the demo), is a nice addition... Shooting out the lights as a drone, or as Riddick once he has a gun in his possession, can also be mighty helpful for setting up stealth combat scenarios, providing you remember to use your stealth mode to move around undetected.... Whilst tough, Riddick is far from invulnerable, so when possible attack from cover, shoot from a distance, create darkness by shooting out the lights, don't be ashamed to employ strategic retreats, and remember that if you remain still in stealth mode for a short while you can recover lost health (only before a block of it competely disappears though)... The 'eye-shine' ability whilst fine for stealth melee kills in the dark and/or when you're certain of not being detected by a gun-mounted flashlight in the face, is better left off for gunfights altogether. I've ignored offering any tips on melee combat because much to my disappointment there's so very little of it in the demo; however that's probably a good thing as it requires a lot more instruction and practice to do it proficiently and the demo was completely lacking a tutorial. Hopefully somebody will find this information useful whilst playing through the short demo a few times. I'm really happy Riddick is making a return to the gaming console. Even if Assault on Dark Athena isn't quite the gaming experience that Butcher Bay was, if it's three quarters as good I'll be a very happy guy.

Crap. After my Xbox died (fugging RRoD) I've been dependent on my PS3 for entertainment. The demo better come out on it soon. And I had to sell my Wii to help out a cat with all it's skin torn off it's foot. Anyone who says I shouldn't have should go screw themselves.

Sweden rocks :) Hope this is as good as the last Riddick game. Remember when there was a TV program/documentary about Starbreeze on the tv many years ago when they were unknown and at the end of the program/documentary their publisher killed thier current game (don't know what it was named, but it was before Enclave)

Yea, the demo was really short, but the graphics were nice and smooth, and the voice acting was terrific, amazingly good voice acting. there's just something about the demo that was weird u know, maybe it just seems weird playing it again on the 360 or somethin.

Wow the demo is fun, a bit too short though, but at least we know the full version is going to be a very long game

I downloaded the demo last night, but I've been far too caught up Lost & Damned, SF IV and Killzone 2 to go anywhere near it yet.... looking forward to it though as I loved the first game. Will definitely give the demo a blast tonight at some point I think...

So what if you get the demo for the 360, enjoy it and when the game is available get it for your PS3 if that's what you want. ---------------------------------------- because, as so often is, some times developers skimp on the ps3 version because they are lazy( lost planet anyone?) i want to make sure the ps3 version meets my standards, since if i do buy it thats the version i want to get, then AFTER i see what the ps3 version is like, i'll check out the 360 version to see if they are the same

Red felony, RE5 demo came to xbox live first due to a free bonus for microsoft doing deals with capcom for RE xbox. In this case I believe it's just because the PSN has to update itself to get an update on it, and that happens like every week or two doesn't it, while xbox live is live, so as soon as it's ready it's put on. At least that's how I think it works, I don't have a PS3 but that's what I've been told from my friends who own one.

I loved it, and I'll definitely be getting it at some point, unless reviews are bad due to some issue(s) that didn't occur in the demo.

Uhh, yeah, what about a PC demo?Pleease don't tell me you're gonna be lame like Ubisoft and not release one. It's getting to the point where i don't wanna buy a game if they don't release a demo out of shear principle unless there's a logical reason for it(like Oblivion and Fallout 3).That and i don't know if the game is actually any GOOD...ahem.Though i'm sure this one will almost assuredly be.

@guitarist131 Atari is a publisher. And the demo's good. A bit short, but it lets you have a go at Stealth, Shooting and Drone control (which basically involves shooting and a bit of suicide) :P

I am going to think about how awesome it will be to play this game all evening!!!! You know how hard it is to pay attention in class when all you can think about is this awesome game waiting for you at home?!?!
