Resonance of Fate dated

Sega bringing Tri-Ace's Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 RPG to North America on March 16.

Sega won't have to wait much longer to see if its upcoming role-playing game Resonance of Fate will resonate with Western gamers' tastes. The publisher today announced that it will be releasing the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game in North America on March 16.

Does trading in absurdly large swords for hand cannons mean the heroes are overcompensating more or less?

In Resonance of Fate, players will control members of a private military contracting firm in a world where most of Earth has been rendered uninhabitable. The only remaining pockets of civilization surround the tower of Basel, an experimental air purifier with a mind of its own. The game carries a steampunk aesthetic, with the ordinary RPG trappings of swords and sorcery traded in for guns and acrobatic attacks.

The game was developed by Tri-Ace, which has built up a reputation for role-playing games. The studio's previous efforts include the Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile series, as well as one-off titles like Radiata Stories and Infinite Undiscovery.

Resonance of Fate is already out in Japan, where it's being called End of Eternity. In its first week of sales, the PS3 edition of the game came in second on the top 10 sales charts, with the Xbox 360 version finishing in eighth.

Ha, forget about the money...I'm more worried about having enough TIME to play them all. I'm only about halfway through Star Ocean right now and there's no way I'm going to put off playing FFXIII when I finally get to pick it up. And now I have to worry about ROF too?! Geeze, this time last year I was complaining about the lack of RPG's available on the PS3...guess they're finally coming through.

March 16th ... hmm one week after FFXIII. risky move for SEGA since some JRPG fans might have little cash left after FFXIII. luckily i'm not one of these ^_^

For such a good looking game, I'm curious why it hasn't gotten more publicity. I reserved my copy yesterday just because I was worried about availability issues. Can't wait to check it out!

I dunno if this date is wrong or not because Gamstop still carries the date of March 9. But the game looks friggin' awseome and I cannot wait! Finally a good season of solid RPG's!

Finally one of few JRPG devs that's taking the cinematic approach that's seen in today's RPG's.

I always enjoyed the "John Woo" style in movies or games. I'm definitely picking this up. But staying away from magic in a JRPG truly intrigues me, hopefully they incorporated great hand-to-hand and melee-combat systems to compliment the gun-play. You run into alittle bit danger of repetition and monotony if there's not enough variations in game-play. I liked the way the games "Phantom Dust" and "Path of Neo" mix those different combat styles some years back.

I miss the good ol' 16 bit days. Where's EarthBound? Final Fantasy VII? Chrono Trigger. I personally felt those were the glory days of JRPGs. Whatever, if Resonance of Fate scores well across all publications, I'll pick this one up.

This game looks like it has so much potential, but it doesn't look like it's going to perform nearly as well as what we hope it will be. They keep only showing cinematics, not alot of gameplay. That's a sure sign of disappointment.

I wish people would quit saying they should not release it by FF13. STFU and get a damn job(s). I'm buying both back to back and If you're a TRUE RPG FAN, then you will too. : /

The demo is available in the Japanese PSN store. I played it, even though I couldn't read a word. The battle system is kind of interesting. You have timed button presses for shooting and evasion and the characters can move pretty much freely on the battlefield. The graphics are pretty solid too. I got tired of not being able to read a word of the text so I gave up, but it is somewhat playable.

@ Timesplitt I hear what you're saying. JRPGs these days focus too much on flash and not enough on story. I've hardly even touched my 360, PS3, or Wii lately because I've gotten this urge to play some of the best JRPGs in history and none of my top 10 are for current gen (or even previous gen) consoles. With each generation JRPGs become more and more shallow as companies that produce said games worry more about making a profit and therefore try to make it flashy to get the game some attention. I can't blame them for wanting to make back the money on producing these games but at what cost? Anyways, lately I've been playing the original 8-bit Final Fantasy because of the excitement over FFXIII and Star Ocean over the excitement of Tri-Ace's new Resonance of Fate aka End of Eternity. It's cool to go back to see these companies' roots. Seeing and playing the games that got them known in their early years helps you really appreciate the genre.

@Tronzo Actually, that's a trademark issue. It could've been a copyright issue had it had something to do with the novel. So I take it Japan doesn't care about trademark laws, or does the trademark only apply to western countries (since the Japanese cover seems to keep the name)?

@ thisranks, there is a battle demo on the japanese store. good fun, can't wait to pick this up.

I'd like to see a demo as well, but from what i've been seeing on Gamefaqs, it looks like it's going to be a good game.

Tronzo

'The End of Eternity', is a novel which has nothing to do with the game, so it's a copyright issue.

I like how sometimes they change an already English title of a Japanese game into something completely different.

The first half of this year is getting pretty insane for releases. I don't have $1000 to burn, and I'm sure I aint the only one who's being forced to pass up on some games, at least temporarily.

This game looks pretty fruity. They should've done what sega did with Valkyria Chronicles, had gunplay that was believable. From what I' ve seen hopping around like crazy with guns looks a little too out there for me.

Some of us have already finished FFXIII, so i'm glad this is coming out in march, will also pick up GOW3 and Yakuza 3.

no eu or au release date though. bit of a shame. Although ill need some recovery time from when i play ffxiii. I assume if you want this game (which i do) you would have to get it quick, ithink it will be a game that will be taken of the shelves early and become a rare treasure.

For once, a game that should be delayed to the start of May (this actually looks pretty good, in spite of the nonsensical Japanese name for the female character). (reanbell, lol.....)

Ya like most of you people said its not gonna sell well, too many major title releasing in a short time frame. but what pisses me off the most is that its gonna give more reason for japanese developpers to not localize games saying that some titles did not sell well. anyway im gonna pick that game when it comes out, but i probably not play it before a little while. stack pile of unplayed games incoming!

Yakuza 3 releasing the same day as FFXIII and now this game releasing on the same day (IIRC) as GOD of War 3.. What on earth are they thinking?? *sighs* ..least this game leaves Xbox-ers to buy something.. o.O

No matter how good the game is, and it does not matter if it is better than XIII. You can't release a game one week after that big monster FF is and much less on the same day GOW 3 is going out as well.....Good luck with that!!!

@TTDog i see. i have a 360 myself and it is the one with rpgs (outside japan :P) I enjoyed tales of and eternal sonata. but after that i just had to go back to last gens dragon warrior and shadow hearts and persona, most rpgs today have good graphics but lack a story to keep me interested. i can agree on that small controller thing. if you want smaller try playing with an snes one !

@Timesplitt: When I had my PS2 (which wasn't being used once I got to sample the delights offered by KOTOR and Jade Empire etc) I wasn't that into JRPG's so it was no great loss. It's only this generation that I've really started to play them and thus far there's really only one console to go for JRPG wise and it isn't made by Sony. I tried going back and playing some old PS2 stuff since (got one for the kid to play Guitar Hero) and I just can't go back to playing old, ropey, games like I used to... the Dualshock is way too small for my hands and the third party pad I always used first time around has gone, so the chances of me going back and playing some ugly, out of date, JRPG's using a tiny pad made for kids is really, really slim.

@TTDog lol i have no idea what im talking about. you dont even know what im talking about buddy. i wasn't talking about this gen. you gave away your ps2 which has what you like; RPG for a damn console that pretty much had most its games on pc.. i mean even most of the 360 library is on the pc. lol and your comback is manual installs... lol excuse me while i play my ps3 games on my ps3 and only my ps3........... PS.don't take my post so seriously

What sort of a marketing screw up is this? You do not release an RPG just before or after the release of a FF game because your sales are going to suck.

"@nicky True true but got to remeber that final fantasy 13 already released in japan awhile ago and got average scores" Err actually one of the more widly respected magazines over there (famitsu) gave it 39/40 which is far from average. And remember that score is actually 4 different scores from 4 different reviewers. Should be a good game but they kinda shot themselves in the foot, they tried to make it more western to cater for the western audience because its a impossible task. While westerners complain that japan is insular and only buys japanese stuff, they seem to forget that they are mostly the same and shun japanese games RPG games "because they are JRPG's" :P Hopefully this game won't suffer the same fate and will resonate more with both uk and japanese gamers!!!.... ok ok put the rotten tomatoes down , it was a bad joke i'm going!

KimCheeWarriorX

Why didn't they stick with the name "End of Eternity". I think it sounds alot more epic than "Resonance of Fate". Maybe copyright reasons (thinking back to the problem Enix had with the Dragon Quest name in the 80's and 90's)?
