Resistance dev unveils Outernauts on Facebook

Insomniac Games teams with Electronic Arts for sci-fi-themed game on social network; gameplay to include exploration, beast training, combat.

Insomniac Games is ready to make its social game debut. The developer today announced Outernauts for Facebook in conjunction with Electronic Arts.

Insomniac wants to "evolve the definition" of a Facebook game.

The developer described the sci-fi-themed Outernauts as an adventure role-playing game that sees players exploring the galaxy, accumulating loot, capturing and training creatures, and fighting space pirates.

"We see a huge opportunity to reach an entirely different audience of gamers through Facebook," Insomniac founder Ted Price said in a statement. "As we have demonstrated for nearly 20 years in the console games space, we're confident we can help evolve the definition of a game experience on Facebook."

While Insomniac established a Facebook and social game division called Insomniac Click last year, Outernauts won't sport that name. As a representative from the studio explained on Twitter, "A lot has changed in the industry since last year, as well as in our studio. After some discussion, we concluded that every game we make regardless of the platform and audience it's intended for should be under the Insomniac Games umbrella."

Outernauts is currently in closed beta testing, with a public beta coming soon.

Why can't you just include Facebook interaction on a free-to-play game? I'd rather not have to play a game where I have to endure all the notifications and chat distracting me from the game.

Still, I'm open enough to this. If it's different and doesn't depend on ultra slow-motion time management gameplay, I may even play it. That screenshot sure doesn't have me convinced, though.

Insomniac...

I expected better from them of all people :(

Gaming is quickly becoming a joke.

I'd like to be excited about this, but two things keep that from happening: 1.) Face 2.) Book I have yet to see a game on Facebook that you can actually play for more than a couple of minutes at a time (without buying energy, that is), or that doesn't spam you again and again and again to spend real money, or that try to force you to add dozens of people to your friends list just to meet some in-game requirement. Plus, most of them seem to follow the same template of building and maintaining something, which more often than not revolves around a lot of time spent waiting for minutes, hours, or even days. Not exactly compelling gameplay, unless spending real money to complete every in-game task interests you.

If cigarettes ruin lives and get warning labels then facebook games should be re-considered. After all, facebook games kill babies, and that's not a meme or anything it's actually a fact.

Wow this really makes me sad.  Poor Insomniac.  I wonder how much EA is paying them to do this.

Oh no we didn't make money from our last few games!  We are desperate so let's attempt to quickly scam casual gamers on Facebook with micro-transactions.  That will probably put us in the black again.

Facebook is like a bone graveyard where like the elephants, devs go and die.

I know the market for games has expanded but every time I see a "core" developer shifting resources to work on something like this I feel like those are resources that could have been used on main projects. Yes I know that a social game like this takes a smaller investment of time, money and personal, and it's not like Insomniac is going to stop making the big console games but still that;s my reaction.

how about you make a good game and not a crappy facebook game why are there so many social games nowadays most of them are just cash grabs

Another Farmville perhaps. I might check it out just to see what it's about. I get into these games for about a month and then get burned out and don't want to play them anymore.

I actually like that they are making a different game, but it looks too much like other browser games and I have little faith in EA. I never really got into the Resistance series, while I loved the 50's style in the Fallout games and I also love other sci-fi shooters like the Halo series and TimeSplitters series. I do think they have potential though.

FYI, hope insomnia games don't loose the perspective, console/pcgamers are where real games are played on.

I wish insomnia actually makes a 'game' than just stupid countless click and score point games that littered in Facebook.
