Resistance 3 multiplayer beta fires up in August

Comic-Con 2011: Insomniac says trial for upcoming sci-fi shooter dropping in two weeks for holders of SOCOM 4.

by

SAN DIEGO--Gamers who picked up April's well-received SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs were promised early access to the multiplayer beta for Insomniac Games' Resistance 3 at a to-be-determined date in the future. Now, the developer has dated the beta, saying it will begin during the first week of August.

Resistance 3's beta starts next month.

The news stems from Insomniac's official Twitter feed, where the developer wrote that those with SOCOM 4 codes in North America can get in alongside European PlayStation Plus subscribers. The developer did not say when, or if, the beta will open to the public.

As for the full game, Resistance 3 is due out on September 6. It will be the first game to use Sony's new online pass program, whereby new copies of the game will be provided a code to unlock the game's online features. Additionally, Resistance 3 will be available in a $150 Sharpshooter iteration and a $500 3D TV bundle.

@Mostru but that is where you are wrong, i buy used games but i also support the industry by buying DLC/digital games. i buy a new game for 60 thats all i get is the game, i buy a used game for 40 then i have a 20 in leeway for DLC/addons in theory. I have explained in detail what the fuss is about if you choose to ignore it then that is your hangup.

@tachsniper I have to admit I haven't been playing games as long as you have, by your standards I may seem like a childish, pretentious little twit, In truth I was a bit vocal on the topic of online passes but (taking back all I said on 'true' gamers) I shall stick to my convictions, You may have been playing video games longer than many people (myself included) and for many decades enjoyed (hopefully) what the industry offered you, however you are currently not supporting the industry one bit!!! I thoroughly enjoy the fact that the gaming industry is making a large profit, though I don't care for the figures, because unlike oil companies (which is a poor example to take) game companies actually care about consumer thought because you play their games and decide what is good, bad and what may need to be improved upon, This online pass is just another tool which game companies use to assure customer input by having people buy games new whether concurrent with their release or after some sort of price drop or purchasing offer, The premise is quite simple really and I don't understand what all the fuss is about - you buy a game, get the pass (which is included at no extra cost), input code and that's all, The online pass is a method of ensuring customers will buy new, but none the less you can buy used and simply purchase the pass separately for (what I am assuming) is a minor added expense I have said all I have to say on this topic . . .

@Gelugon_baat This is not about receiving money for a transaction. This is about dishonest business and finding a way to legally double dip. When the new game is sold they receive their money, Now they are trying to scalp additional profit from a second hand sale. Not only that but receive this profit potentially whenever the game changes hands so we could be looking at a x3,x4, or even a x5 transaction. As i said before you don't pay an additional $5000 for the privilege of driving a used car outside your neighborhood do you? Only in the gaming industry is second hand demonized. Largely because of corporate greed. What happened is in the mid to late 90's unsavory businessmen (and women) were looking for the next big industry as law and policies were cracking down on oil and energy. They saw this budding market called video gaming and decided here is an up and coming industry with no law or regulations governing extreme profiteering so i know! Lets insert ourselves into this new industry and run it as we see fit and jack the profits though the roof. And that is exactly what they did and why now gaming is a "business" when it used to be a "hobby". You don't see anyone else trying to get a profit from second hand sales, except gaming. and if it really doesn't matter to you then why even bother posting a lengthy post about how it does matter to you logic escapes some people...

@Gelugon_baat you can't play pirated games online so your DRM excuse doesn't hold water. Gaming is a 13 billion dollar a year in profit industry. Second now only to Oil. There is no need for thi8s "online pass" except to try and systematically destroy the used game market. Sony has admitted this is their intention. So no matter how you spin it and try and justify it, right from the horses mouth is what is really happening.

Sony I love you but I hate the idea, the only saving grace is your online is free, but heck if i found a used copy of say R3 for $40 somewhere and it still retailed for $60, I really wouldn't mind putting up $5 more for online if i still saved a chunk of money.

@Mostru Exactly. It's annoying how people complain about the online pass when they know next to nothing about why it's being made. If people would buy their multiplayer games new, they wouldn't be making this.

I recently sent an idea in to PlayStation Blog.Share (google it) to allow for owners of a pass (i.e., the first person to use an included or purchased pass) to be able to invite a certain number of people to use their same pass. The invited people can't share in order to keep things controlled. This way used buyers still have to buy a pass but now families and roomates can play as well. Please vote for it if it shows up.

@X_Colbert_X Well done in answering my post with a handful of facts I already new and have no relevance to my comments I will not needlessly argue with you - since that would indeed be childish! All I am saying is that I have heard too many negative critiques from people who do not know what the service even is . . . criticising over nothing and distorting facts is what irritates me my friend I never implied the existence of a 'fake' gamer - which I would be based on your definition - or criticizing gamers choice - that is you putting words in my mouth I disagree with people who criticise for the sake of criticising, people who will not play games over trivial matters such as this . . . and above all else people who don't (not can't because there are many options available) contribute in their own way by helping developers profit of games and keep on delivering good games aimed at us, my friend, the consumer Games aren't made for free and it is my opinion - which means nothing to anyone except myself, but I feel I should state my mind - that buying used games or renting these with the intention of completing the game and not getting a feel for them (which is fine) benefits no one And if these people are the ones combating the introduction of the online pass then I am sorry but I cannot except any criticism you provide until I am provided with further evidence to the contrary which you, my good, non childish and understanding friend have not provided me with

@X_Colbert_X I wouldn't call someone who plays Farmville a gamer.

X_Colbert_X

@Mostru Gamers are defined as people who play games. Saying that one person is a "real" gamer implies that there are "fake" gamers. Sure, people may prefer more in-depth games while others may enjoy playing the more casual puzzle game, but the fact of the matter is you're still a gamer no matter what game you play. Putting people into gaming cliques is discriminatory and just plain childish.

I'm really hating all this complaining over the online pass, All people who rent or buy used games are not gamers to me because they are showing zero financial support to the developers who made these games, I'm truly sorry if you lack the funds to buy new games or the patience to wait for a price reduction! To all readers - please do not listen to these people if you actually buy video games on release or when they come down in price - because you will actually have access to the online pass I assume that all people posting complains rent or buy used games because otherwise you have no reason to hate the online pass system - save for the task of accessing the playstation store and inputing the code!!! If I have left something out please tell me because if the online system is truly bad for real gamers then I want to be the first to know
