Thanks to the reliability of Microsoft's Xbox Live and Sony's PlayStation Network, online competitive and co-op gaming has quickly become the norm for console shooters. Even still, Sony and Insomniac Games are looking to push the envelope with Resistance 2, a game that boasts 60-player competitive battles as well as an online co-op campaign that accommodates up to eight players.

With ambitious plans, the publisher now needs gamers to help it iron out the bugs. Today, Sony put out an open call for gamers to join the Resistance 2 public beta. Sony didn't reveal specifics for when the test will begin, but it did say that testers would be afforded access to the aforementioned online modes. Potential participants must be 18 or over, own a PlayStation 3, and have an active PSN account and a broadband Internet connection. Sony also noted that space is limited.

The follow-up to Insomniac's 2006 PS3 launch title Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2 again follows the story of Sergeant Nathan Hale, a US army ranger turned global defense hero who must fight to fend off an apparent alien invasion. The game is slated to arrive exclusively on the PS3 on November 4.
