Resident Evil's Next (and Possibly Last) Film Set to Begin Shooting Soon

The sixth movie in the series is expected to be its last, at least by its director.

The next film in the Resident Evil series, which might well be its last, is set to begin shooting soon.

In a recent post on Instagram, franchise star Milla Jovovich posted the picture below of her having a face cast made for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. She also noted that she was set to leave for South Africa at the end of this week "to start prepping for the movie." That should allow for filming to get underway in August, as was previously said to be the plan.

The Final Chapter, as its title suggests, is intended to be the last entry in what would be a six-movie series. Writer and director Paul W.S. Anderson said last year that was his aim when writing the film, though it's possible plans have changed. Jovovich, who is also Anderson's wife, had a baby earlier this year, which caused a delay in the movie's production.

Whether it's the last Resident Evil movie or not, you can likely expect it to be in 3D. Anderson is a fan of the technology, and spoke last year about how essential it is to think about it even during the writing process, which he said he was doing with The Final Chapter.

"I approach my films right from the inception, I kind of write action scenes and pick out locations that I think and know--because I've done so much of it--will translate very well into 3D," he said. "Then when we build the sets, we build sets that I know will shoot well in 3D. It's really, even from this point, 3D is something I'm definitely thinking about. And I think it's one of the things that people really appreciate about the movies that I'm involved with. Even if you don't like any other aspect of them, I think the one thing that most people do agree on is the 3D looks fantastic and that's really good news."

While many fans of the game series deride the Resident Evil movies, they have been successful--the last two movies, Afterlife and Retribution, combined to gross more than $540 million worldwide.

If this does turn out to be the last Resident Evil movie, games still won't be the only way to experience the series: It was reported last year that a Resident Evil TV series is in the works, though it won't be released until after The Final Chapter.

As for games, Resident Evil 7 is reportedly in development, and we know for sure that Capcom is at work on a remastered version of Resident Evil 0 to be released on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC in early 2016.
