Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City Hands-On Preview - Four Eyes

With a nod to Left 4 Dead, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City brings squad-based shooting to this survival horror series.

There are two sides to every story. With Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, we're finally getting a peek behind the scenes of the villainous Umbrella Corporation: the twisted pharmaceutical corporation that has caused more outbreaks than cured. Along with introducing a new cast of six Umbrella spec-ops commandos--who are all crazy in their own unique way--developer Capcom has recruited Slant Six (SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3) to infuse some extra vigor into the game's combat.

At the recent Capcom Gamers Day 2011 event in San Francisco, we got the chance to learn a little more about the game, as well as don the devil horns ourselves for a hands-on session. We also checked in with producer Mike Jones about character customization and a few other odds and ends, which you can find in the interview below.

A brief presentation preceded our time with the game and included a brand-new trailer featuring everyone's favorite undead stalker: Nemesis. The trailer also established Operation Raccoon City's setting as September of 1998, between the events of Resident Evil 2 and those of Resident Evil 3. We then watched a demonstration of the game's prologue mission. It followed our spec-ops team as they rendezvoused with Hunk, another Umbrella operative, and plotted how to recover the G-Virus sample from Dr. Birkin before he could sell it to the US military.

All this, of course, was just pretense to blow through an urban compound killing security personnel ("They can't be trusted"). This let us see the game's cover system in action. Instead of holding down a button to stick to cover, your character in Operation Raccoon City will automatically lock into place simply by walking up to the desired cover. From there he can pop up and fire normally--making sure to fire in short bursts to maintain accuracy--or blind-fire wildly.

When it was time to get our hands on the game, we selected Christine "Four Eyes" Yamata, a field scientist who filled the support role in the group. All characters can equip one skill (either active or passive), one primary weapon, and one secondary weapon. Program Infected, an active skill, lets Four Eyes control an enemy and select whom it attacks. Biometric Vision, a passive skill, lets her clearly see infected enemies and their weak points. We chose Attraction Pheromone, an active skill that made nearby infected enemies swarm and attack a single target.

The game will include four-player online-only cooperative play.

From a selection of shotguns, submachine guns, and rifles, we chose the automatic shotgun as our primary weapon. The secondary weapons were all different pistol flavors, so we picked the one with the most range. All weapons have their own statistics, such as range and damage, and while you don't upgrade these weapons, there are numerous versions in each category. We also got to choose our three teammates from the five remaining candidates. Bertha (the medic), Beltway (the heavily armored brute), and Vector (the guy who can turn invisible) made the cut.

Our mission took place right after the prologue seen earlier. Hunk was missing, Dr. Birkin had pulled Mr. Hyde on us, and the T-Virus outbreak was in full swing. It fell on us to clean up this biological mess and ensure that Umbrella's involvement remained hidden. Right away we noticed this didn't handle like any Resident Evil game we had played before. If you lamented Resident Evil 5's arguably laborious controls, you may find Operation Raccoon City's quick pace a step in the right direction. We could fire while moving, as well as quickly swap between our two weapons. Additional weapons, ammo, and healing items were also in abundance to keep us moving through the demo.

And unlike in Resident Evil 5, hand-to-hand combat in Operation Raccoon City wasn't just a forerunner to getting hit. By combining the melee button and direction stick, we could strike in front, behind, or to the sides of our character and fend off zombies from multiple directions. After hitting a target a few times, we could finish it off with a stylish execution kill or use it as cover. Against highly mobile targets, Operation Raccoon City's auto-aiming feature automatically snapped our character's laser sight to the nearest target with the press of a button. However, this technique worked only with pistols (which we automatically switched to), and our character moved at a walking pace.

You can't order your squadmates around, but they can hold their own.

At the end of our mission we were awarded experience points based on our performance and were given an overall score. We could also earn extra experience by completing side missions, such as destroying computer servers with incriminating evidence; collecting evidence items and uploading them at laptops; or locating the stuffed Raccoon City raccoon hidden in each mission. Experience points are account-wide and can be spent on any character whose skills you want to increase, or they can be used to purchase new weapons for your entire team.

You can tap into your dark side when Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is released on March 20, 2012, on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. A PC version will follow later in the year.

Looks awesome. Silent Hill HD, Downpour, and RE:ORC make me happy.

This game looks like it could be at least fun, if not slightly amusing to just turn into a zombie and eat your friends lol. But I do agree, it takes all the horror out of survival horror.. but if I want to play one of those games.. just turn to Dead Space 1 and 2.. Dead Space pretty much ripped the heart out of Resident Evil and then turned it into one of those slobbering necromorphs that has no soul.

I'll be buying this because its returning back to RE2-3 setting. USS and UBCS FTW. Hated what they did with Re5 and its storyline, turning Jill into Alice and draining all personality out of Wesker. Even though this is a spinoff, I'm already hyped up for this more than RE5.

@KenjiKuzunoha Well, now you have the same complain RE die-hard fans had about RE5 or even RE4. Welcome to the club. =P

RE4 and 5 was the reason I became a RE fan, those two games were freaking awesome! When I heard about RE Operation Raccoon City I was really excited to see it, but then when I actually saw the gameplay, my first thought was WTF!? Man it's so dissapointing, it's nothing like RE4 or 5 :-(

The A.I. on this looks pretty terrible. Just look at the gun wielding adversaries that pay no mind to the player running past them and slaughtering their buddies. Also... why in the hell are there human enemies??? I know it probably has something to do with the story, but it's not something that should be included in a survival horror franchise like Resident Evil. This series has definitely gone down the drain...

How do you make a game that already isn't scary anymore even less scary? co-op....nice to see they didn't learn from that mistake with re5 and how bad fear 3 was. And the fact thats its online only is pretty pathetic, outbreak atleast had sp options...

This looks more resident evil like then resident evil four and five looked. Woot woot. I don't care for parasite infected people who know how to use weapons, a real enemy comes at you at endless hordes as the walking undead, and mutated experiments gone wrong! Not some Spanish(?) fellow coming at you with a chainsaw and a bag over his head.

The problem with games like this is that it isnt going to apeal to most of the existing RE fans for obvious reasons. And people who do like these type of fast action shooters arent going to be that interested either, when you already have things like Battlefield 3, MW3, GOW3 etc etc. Those games are far superior in every way compared to this Cheap, shoddy looking game. Come to think of it, this game looks very similar to Dark Void, and i wouldnt be suprised if it suffered the same fate. They are using the resident evil name because it has already been establised as a very successful franchise, yet this game does not look like it has any of the quality of the series. It looks more like one of those RE spins off more suited to the wii. Like someone mention before, ill think ill get silent hill downpour for my survival horror fix.

This game does look like a lot of fun. The 3rd person perspective reminds me of Gears of War, and the action looks alot more robust and fast paced which I like. I've always like RE, so this new style looks to me like it would work very well with the game. And 4 player co-op, Yes Please!

People always seem to forget that the last good Resident Evil game was Code Veronica (or did RE3 came out after?) The series has taken a turn for the worse with RE4 which the only thing people could find to praise was the targeting system. Thank you for making one of the best playstation franchices just another action game capcom. I'll pass on this game and enjoy Silent Hill Downpour

This should be a pretty fun game and a great new style in the RE franchise. Keeping RE one of the Best Zombie titles available. I also like how they returned to the original setting, the G & T virus made a better story then a parasite that gets jammed down your throat (Las plagas & Progenitor) and for those complaining not all new RE games will follow this style. The gun shooting games weren't exactly horror just BOOM BOOM

tandukbadak
tandukbadak

Why didn't they just make this game as a new IP? With a "Run-n-gun" gameplay (and a bit of cover based system), it's the same as watching those RE movies. Full of over the top action, without the horror. But I think this kind of gameplay appropriate if we look at the story, which is have a lot of human as an enemy. I can imagine fighting armed soldier with RE5 gameplay, no thanks. Still, I wish RE never become like this.

I am more interested in how the stories of RE universe will change and how it is integrated with the game.

Watching Resident Evil: Degeneration, the CGI movie that is connected to the game storyline, and it's more like what Resident Evil should be than the games have been for a while. Maybe Capcom should take note from Degeneration to note how the series should be.

Saw this at Pax and it looked like alot of fun for what it was (another zombie survival game) not a Resident Evil Game. I'll stick to Black ops zombie mode instead of a brand new purchase. Nice try though you almost had my money with the mention of Resident Evil kinda like a cock tease

This looks absolutely terrible. I don't want another run and gun shooter with chest high walls. I want a resident evil game. I'm actually disgusted by this. And the worst thing about it is there's no SP? Thats Just Great. The worst aspect of RE5 was having a brain dead bot follow you around everywhere you go, ruin the immersion, and waste medpacks on you when you're barely hurt. Now we get to have 3 of them. No thanks.

I don't like being negative, but this game is not going to do well. By todays standards it is already a sunken ship. It's a shame too, becuase I like the Resident Evil story. I keep wondering why a game hasn't been developed that is a true representaion of the RE story line.

Smokescreened84

While this might be appealing for those who just want constant action, lots to shoot and the Gears Of War thing, this isn't exactly Resident Evil. I guess survival horror truly is gone, I miss Fatal Frame/Project Zero, those were great survival horror's. The RE series has sadly gone down the short attention span, big boom boom route. Still it's good to see a playable female lead for once instead of being an unplayable support role, or an lockable for completing the entire game with the male lead, so that's one small step forwards in the right direction, but only a small one. But the whole squad thing really takes away from the original concept of the series - facing the undead on your own with very limited ammo and supplies while solving puzzles. Pity. The game might end up being interesting, maybe, but I would really like to see a return of actual survival horror.

The good news is, nemesis is back. The bad news is, he's in Gears of War.

so this is kinda like a clone of Left 4 Dead for ps3? about f***** time, how did it take this long for some1 to rip this game off.

i don't care what people say about this game, it looks interesting and has a lot of nostalgia. If they made another old school RE game or a remake they would be accused of not having any imagination and the new gen kids wouldn't buy it. They have to follow trends as well as cash in on fan BJ's to stay on the market. if its fun play it if not then don't. Go make your own RE game then.

Looks pretty terrible for a RE game. Might be a good generic zombie shooter, but this is nothing like RE.

Okay, actually watched the video and the living enemies sure look stupid and awfully resistent to gunfire. Looks more like Alan Wake. I refuse to hate the game until after I play it though.

Been a fan since re1, im still loyal no matter how bad the master treats me :P. All i hope is that it takes a dump on what dead island was... Besides in the last few you unlock all the guns and stuff at the end and have no need for em :S.

Sounds like the author really stunk at RE5, heh, but yeah, I don't like the sound of the cover system. Sounds like I'll be sticking to walls when I don't want to; otherwise, the game sounds like a cross between Gears and L4D with RPG elements and ripping off games like that isn't such a bad thing.

dxBIGBOSSxb
dxBIGBOSSxb

Also, if this is supposed to be a tactical, squad based, military unit than why are their health items made of weeds they find growing on the street?! In the other games it made sense, as it was part of the strange, and dark toned atmosphere of the original, blending supernatural and scientific. In THIS game it seems out of place and stupid.

dxBIGBOSSxb
dxBIGBOSSxb

This game will be nothing more than a cash in to the four-player zombie craze going on right now with games such as Nazi Zombies, Zombie Apocalypse, Dead Island, Undead Nightmare, and of course, Left 4 Dead, just to name a few. This is NOT Resident Evil. It is a spit in the face to it's fans who prefer zombie games that are scary, memorable, and make you think. Don't give me "It's a spin-off" either, because Code Veronica was a spin-off, and that was scary and very good, but if you want a bad spin-off look at RE: Dead Aim, the only other RE to focus solely on action other than the Umbrella Chronicles, (Which is an arcade rail based shooter so NO it doesn't count) and it failed miserably. This isn't Resident Evil, it's "Left 4 Call of Battle Zombies, Michael Bay Strategic Operation Simulator"

When Capcom close a fiscal year filled with money loss due to crappy RE games, they will learn that this s*** IS NOT A RESIDENT EVIL GAME!!! WTF is that Capcom?? Make a real RE game or shoot the franchise in the head with a shotgun once and for all.

Capcom should do themselves a favor and take time to check out how fans are reacting. I think it is safe to say that this something that the majority of us do NOT want and never asked for.
