Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City begins March 20

Slant Six-developed spin-off dated for Xbox 360, PS3; Special Edition to include embroidered patches, all preorder bonuses; PC edition to follow.

by

The Raccoon City Board of Tourism should brace itself for another sluggish spring, as Capcom has announced a March 20 launch date for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. A PC edition will launch at a later date.

Few pests can be as damaging to real estate values as an infestation of Lickers.

Developed by Slant Six, Operation Raccoon City offers a squad-based shooter take on Capcom's seminal survival horror series. The game puts players in control of a half-dozen special commandos employed by The Umbrella Corporation, the sinister pharmaceutical corporation whose unethical experiments caused the series' rash of zombie outbreaks in the first place. While most entries in the Resident Evil series have players either containing a zombie outbreak or working to expose the truth behind Umbrella's dirty dealings, the commandos' job in Slant Six's game is to cover up the company's dirt and make sure there are no survivors in Raccoon City.

Capcom also detailed some preorder incentives for Operation Raccoon City. Those who put money down at participating retailers early will receive an extra costume for each of the game's playable commandos, as well as two retailer-exclusive bonus weapons. Players who want it all will be able to pick up a Special Edition of the game in SteelBook packaging that will include two embroidered patches and all eight bonus weapons.

For more on the game, check out GameSpot's latest preview of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.

@almossbb It's true...i don't want a moving-shooting game either...RE is about stress of shooting down even a single zombie...let the multi shooting and covering be for other games...i think i don't buy this RE but maybe for collecting REz

@ Cloud-Zehro Oh. And one more thing. Dead Island was a fun game. Teamwork is important to complete quests effectively. It had more appeal in the scare factor due to the clever execution of sound, randomness, and realism. Weapons breaking on you was pretty cool. But, the lack of punishment for getting taken down reduced the challenge and the need for urgency as well. The fact that I knew I would respawn in exchange for money made me less worried. The scare factor was there; however the reaction would have been much stronger if the game wasn't so forgiving in terms of what happens after you die. When you know the punishment is really going to hurt you and your team everyone would be more on edge than usual, Look at Left 4 Dead. You really have to work as team in order to survive ridiculous waves of zombies and special zombie types that have to power to turn the tables on you in an instant. Yes, there are respawns in the game; however the way it was executed made it far more challenging. When you die you will not be put back in the game right a way. The rest of your team has to fend for themselves until you reappear. However, you don't just normally respawn. You are locked in a room and have to wait for your team get you out. Left 4 Dead is frustrating to some, but the challenge and true meaning of teamwork really made that game special. Plus the randomness of the game really created some funny moments that I will never forget.

@ Cloud-Zehro Wow. I have a different view on the game and you want to resort to insults instead of being more civil about it. At least I didn't say the game sucks and left it at that like many others have generally done before me. I just said what I don't like about it. I still have an interest in the game; however I and many others have their own preferences in terms of gameplay. Another individual told me about their opinion about the gameplay that bothered me and made good sense without the need to insult me just because I have a different perspective. Diverse opinions and ideas are infinite, so you need to deal with that. Nuff said. Be blessed people.

@vengefulwilberg They aren't taking anything out, people were still excited about Dead Island, even though it had a respawn system and was technically broken, people still continued to play the same parts over and over when it threw them back a few stages, why? Cause problems aside, the game still delivered to a point, this might not be the same kind of fear that the first RE games had, but you're going to tell me that when you've been shot and are bleeding out, when the massive hordes come at you, WHILE people are shooting at you, you're not going to panic and run to find some distance? Sure, It doesn't have puzzles, sure you're not exactly searching high and low for ammo, but that's just it, this isn't RE6, this is a SPIN-OFF, that means it's going to be DIFFERENT from how the original game played, It's going to be a different take, different story, different view, It's a 'Spin-off'. People need to stop acting like this is the end of the world for RE games, some of us are actually excited for this game, we've already seen the hints that RE6 exists, If this was a reboot to the franchise? Then i'd have a little bit to worry about. On a whole other stand point, isn't this a little bit hypocritical? "Man, people really need to stop insulting people just because they have a different opinion. There is a such thing as freedom of speech." Really, so saying you were being derpy, Isn't my freedom of speech? How interesting.

@vengefulwilberg yea i kinda doubt the other classes can use zombies as meat shields and im really doubting that you can use lets say a hunter or licker as a shield

vengefulwilberg
vengefulwilberg

@lusafis518 Oh. I forgot about the class thing. That makes sense if only the character that can control weaker BOWs does it. I still find it weird, but I guess we will find out more as soon as the beta is released.

lusafis518
lusafis518

@vengefulwilberg but the thing is, that class that is controlling the zombie is the one that can control BOWs (for all i know i could be wrong but im gonna assume its that class that can control bows) so it wont bite you i understand why that class would want to use it, but for the people who cant control BOWs well that is a stupid move on there part lol

I'm trying to see the appeal of this game, but I just cant...This is just a failed attempt to westernize Resident Evil more than it already is. Not so good and static animations... check Repetitive environments... check Only like 3 models of zombies... check Dumb AI (God just look at 5:11) check FULL of action and 0% horror... check Conclusion: A 7.0 at most if reviewers are in a good mood.* *gamespot is the all time exception and they'll give it a 6.0

@Aim4theheads97 That’s not quite what I was saying. I am pro them going back to their horror roots. Resident Evil as an all out action extravaganza (RE5) just leaves a bland taste in your mouth and leaves you wondering where the main course is. Again Resident Evil can still be a survival horror and yet keep the gameplay is has now( by that I mean the RE4 gameplay not this Gears of war clone) Resident Evil 4 was eerie and the Resident Evil 5 DLC had me on edge the whole way through. Being stalked by those creatures was incredibly tense and nerve racking, due how they seemed to pop up in the most inconvenient places, unannounced some times (to which my friend suffered the results of their stealthiness heh) So again it just goes to show that they don’t need the undead or fixed camera angles to make Resident Evil “scary” they just have to put some effort into it.

@Deadly_Nemesis - You are exactly right.

Aim4theheads97
Aim4theheads97

@vengefulwilberg couldn't they head shot the zombie so it would be dead, dead? then use it as a shield?

Aim4theheads97
Aim4theheads97

@Deadly_Nemesis exactly! i loved RE 4 and 5 was.. alright. that spencer estate was scary! minimal bullets, that one coridor with the windows, thos bats scared me so bad! maybe your right, Capcom shouldn't go back to the series roots maybe stick with their new action oriented games, and like the industry, evolve their games

vengefulwilberg
vengefulwilberg

@lusafis518 I know that. just about any person knows that. But realistically no human would ever use a zombie as a meat shield. That would give the zombie an easy opportunity to bite you when the opportunity arrives.. It kind of reminds me of fools who like to wear their pants below their waist. Come on, they wouldn't do that if you were put in the slammer. Plus, if they have to run they would end up falling on their face.

Resident Evil 5 was a big improvement over RE4 (on PC) so I hope this keeps the improvements coming.

@Kemutsemu Mikami doesn't work with Capcom anymore. Last game he worked on was RE4. And this game is somehow seems more Resident Evil'ish than RE5. Racoon City, Umbrella, UBCS, Zombies, T-Virus, we're back to good old days.

Kemutsemu
Kemutsemu

Looks like a mildly interesting zombie game, but it's no Resident Evil-- Shinji Mikami's got nothing to do with it, and it looks like a soulless attempt to cash-in on recent Western market trends. Was intrigued, but will continue to not support Capcom.

@tehmasterer...Technically it's still RE's combat mechanism, you know, with RE4 being the pioneer of the off-center OTS third person shooter and stuff...but yeah as far as L4D goes i'm totally with you...but personally i think i'll just let this thing slide until the actual reinforcement is here...

@syafiqjabar Sadly your right. Its a shame how zombies went from being creatures of fear that we ran from and only attacked when corned to lets see how many we can kill during the coarse of this movie/game.

You guys want to hear a funny story about this game? Every time I go to gamestop and say I'm excited for raccoon city they respond with "would you like to order arkham city?" Seriously how do you mistake raccoon with arkam? They don't even sound a like? I then always decide to tell them I pre ordered arkham city on steam and they become silent.

@ vengefulwilbeg when people are shooting you, it takes the bullets for you so you dont get hurt i think its a great way for a meat shield, plus when you play one of the classes you can control the BOWs for a short time

vengefulwilberg
vengefulwilberg

@Deadly_Nemesis LOL! So true. Respawns in Resident Evil??? And who in their right mind would use a zombie as a meat shield. Those two things are probably what annoys me the most about this game.

vengefulwilberg
vengefulwilberg

@Infinity_Gauntl I know right. I am ok with change. But simply improve on the things that makes a game great and add more content. Resident Evil doesn't need respawns cause it takes the survival out of the phrase survival horror, using zombies as meat shields is the true meaning of the word derp, and etc.

lusafis518
lusafis518

this is not part of the main story for resident evil.... its not suppose to be resident evil 6, its just a side game like RE outbreak and survivor i dont see why people are getting mad about it , but i do say this does look way better then RE 5 that was the worse RE game i ever played, Re gaiden was better then 5

vengefulwilberg
vengefulwilberg

@Cloud-Zehro LOL! It may be a spin off; but that doesn't mean elements that made Resident Evil great have to be taken out. New ideas for a franchise is good; but making the game less like it and less challenging takes away a bit of charm. If Capcom took out even more stuff then they might as well take the words Resident Evil out of the title. The idea of playing the role of Umbrella ops is interesting; but there is other stuff that doesn't agree with me. Respawn shouldn't be an option, since there is a medic, healing supplies, and ways to revive falling allies. This way team strategy will truly make the coop experience more note worthy. Using zombies as meat shields is silly, the game isn't scary enough, no scarcity of supplies(which forces teams to be more careful with ammo), lack of puzzles to solve, and etc. I do like the coop aspect, new combat abilities, and more responsive controls. However it feels less like a Resident Evil game. Maybe some people are tired of waiting for opportunities to bend over for Capcom. Sure, I buy Capcom games, but only if the game is good enough to consider or isn't too much of the same. Man, people really need to stop insulting people just because they have a different opinion. There is a such thing as freedom of speech.

@toddx77 Basically, Capcom realised the zombie movies they like are Zombieland and Planet Terror (and the money-making Resident Evil movies) instead of the Romero movies.

RE4 wasn't that bad of a game. It had a good mix of horror and action and I really enjoyed it. It still had that resident evil, but with a new twist. It seemed though for 5 and ORC capcom has taken only the action and very little of the horror for their recent RE games.

almossbb
almossbb

wow this doesnt look like RE at all, moving AND shooting??? not something we are used to in an RE game

Deadly_Nemesis
Deadly_Nemesis

@Aim4theheads97 I don’t think they need to go back to the original formula in order to take Resident Evil back to its survival horror roots. I mean RE4 had quite an unsettling atmosphere to it and some pretty good scare moments in it as well. Even in the RE5 Spencer mansion DLC they showed us that Resident Evil could have the gameplay of RE4-5 and still be “scary” They just really have to focus more on the horror again instead of trying to make this gigantic action spectacle of out the series.

i want RE 6 to be like the originals, seems like it would be great. but think! they haven't done it for a while, and have focused on the action third person games. they could try making a fixed camera game, but it might not be the same, and everyone will be disappointed and complain

lusafis518
lusafis518

i assume the people who dislike my commit are people who never played the RE1, GC remake, zero, 2,3,CV and don't really know what resident evil is

Mr_arizona
Mr_arizona

Maybe it's just me but I hope this game doesn't do to well cause if it does we can expect RE6 to copy it. RE will never go back to the way it used to be thanks to how well RE4 and RE5 sold and if ORC sells well then we can expect RE6 to follow it's pattern and goodbye RE4 and RE5 gameplay. Again maybe it's just me but I like different games to play well different and not all of them need to play like COD or Gears cause when 2 games are so much alike why bother with the lesser one?

Deadly_Nemesis
Deadly_Nemesis

Wait, this game is made by a western Dev team....*sigh* game over. EDIT After Watching all of it: Okay so...this is pretty much gears of war...but with a Resident Evil paint job. Why would anyone take a zombie hostage? Because threatening the undead with a hostage (of any kind) is clearly the most logical thing to do in that situation...Derp "Don't move other dead people! Or I'll blow this dead person away!..uuh sh*t that's not working for some odd reason O.O It’s almost like they don't care.. HEY UNDEAD PERSON I AM HOLDING HOSTAGE STOP BITTING MY ARM!!" I was really hoping that us being taken back to the Zombie infested streets of the condemned racoon city would give us another chance to play Resident Evil as a survival horror game. But it seems as if it’s somehow even greater opportunity to shove Resident Evil down the shooter hole.

@vengefulwilberg Your definitly right. Wheres our survival horror RE. It seems Capcom is trying to get on the First person bandwagon. Capcom has lost a lot of faith from its fans recently.
