Resident Evil creator's upcoming horror game The Evil Within gets a funny mock news story from The Onion

Fake news story pokes fun at the horror game's use of barbed wire.

by

Bethesda and fake news website The Onion have teamed up for a hilarious news story that parodies the upcoming horror game The Evil Within's use of barbed wire.

"Barbed wire is a positive force for good," Barbed Wire Lobby head Annette Coleman says in the video. "It protects our junkyards from scrap metal thieves and helps keep our cattle ranches safe from wrestlers."

"But Bethesda thinks it's OK to ignore all the benefits of barbed wire and make it look like some scary thing used by murderers," she goes on. "If Bethesda wants to make this right, they should have the main character go behind a fence and then be safe from monsters because they can't climb over the barbed wire to get him. Now that's a game I would play."

The news story is obviously a joke and it's really just an ad for The Evil Within. But it's funny all the same and you can watch the entire video above. The Evil Within, the brainchild of Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, launches August 26 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC.

So barbwire is the joke? is that really the punchline? can someone explain what they are trying to make fun of, i dont know if they are poking fun of an actual political dispute or if they are trying to force an empty joke...if its the latter than i cannot understand why people would find this funny..because they mentioned bethesda and their upcoming game?

"helps keep our cattle ranches safe from wrestlers" Wrestlers? Yeah, I'm sure the World Wrestling Federation is working really hard to prevent their members from causing trouble at cattle ranches. They said "rustlers" in the video. Man, this goes beyond the regular typos I see on Gamespot, lol.

This advert is well done! Best idea for an advert ever! I can't believe the folks at the Onion opted to do this and they did a great job themselves!

I for one like Barb Wire, Pamela Anderson looked really hot in that movie :P.

lol cattle ranchers safe from wrestlers. Funniest part of the whole thing.

Be much funnier though had she said "it keeps toothless hick white trash from having sex with cows and junkie housewife lookalikes being paid $3.50 for sucking off horses" but oh well. Better than nothing. I suppose The Onion isn't about true stories and housewife confessions............

Every article written by Eddie is like an onion article.

Hahahaha this is f**kin' brilliant, it's like an old school game video back in the carmageddon days etc. Nice to see some devs still have a sense of humour.

Did Eddie seriously do an article about a unfunny fake article about a game?

On second thought, I'm not surprised.

That's the funniest part of the article

@darkmask1991  Why? I never understood. Maybe because I don't read anything with his name on it lol.

@CaveManCobb They also tend to be the only news stories I click on. I like my game news quirky and unusual, not "same old same old" about updates to upcoming games and boring crap like that.

@hothtron They already made a badass remake of Resident Evil for the Gamecube, but you were probably still in diapers back then...

@hothtron  Another remake? How many do we need? There's already several. Go play one of them.

@hothtron With a DLC that can be bought to give the character the ability to slightly step to the side.

@tonytones21 I think part of the problem is that Eddie is the site's news editor. His job is simply to relate the news. When that news upsets people they end up taking it out on him.

A lot of sites are in a tough place right now as we get sites like Buzzfeed or Upworthy that have no problem writing these super hyperbolic headlines to get people to read their articles or watch their videos. And as these sites attempt to out-write each other we get more and more outrageous headlines every day. So that leaves a site like Gamespot and a reputable journalist like Eddie in a tough spot. You need to balance your integrity with the reality that in this day and age if your headline doesn't make it sound like the world will end if it isn't clicked on then no one will click on it.

If you look at Gamespot sister site Giantbomb, you'll note that a lot of their news stories are written by Alex Navarro, who happens to be very skilled at writing articles and headlines that manage to engage the reader without misleading them. But it is very rare to find a writer capable of doing that. If you have to choose between writing a witty headline and just blowing your story way out of proportion, the latter is a lot easier of a route to go. Basically, I think Eddie does a fine job writing the news. He's just in a really tough spot being a news editor in this day and age where people care more about sensational news than actual important news.

@tonytones21  It's quite simple actually. Most people think that the news should adhere to a very strict type of content. Take a look back through the articles and the ones that get all the hate are articles that don't have trailers in them, regardless of content, regardless of who is writing them. And when Eddie has a trailer to show off, nobody says a word.

Course I guess you shouldn't expect positivity in a comments section. It would be nice though.

@kitmeep @iamllamapie Seriously though,  it's ridiculous that this Eddie clown is even paid at all, let alone having a permanent position at the GS office.  He had better be up to some genius behind the scenes work, that's all I can say.

iamllamapie
iamllamapie

@rawkstar007  If Eddie seriously thought people broke into ranches to fight cattle there's something awfully wrong.

Pierce_Sparrow
Pierce_Sparrow

@BrokutheMighty @Pierce_Sparrow @hothtron  And we don't really need another remake. Between the GC one and the numerous ports, they'd be better off spending the money and time on a new game. That or they can just leave it alone now and focus on something else.
