Resident Evil 5 goes for the Gold

"Alternative Edition" of survival horror game cut up into new downloadable content early next year, with an all-encompassing retail release March 9; PS3 motion-controller support undetermined.

by

Capcom is ready to breathe new life into Resident Evil 5, as the publisher today detailed its North American plans for the extra content of the game's Japanese "Alternative Edition" release. After surveying its customers on whether they prefer digital or retail distribution, the publisher has chosen both. Early next year, Capcom will release the new content in a pair of downloadable add-ons, followed by a comprehensive retail release of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game.

"Chris? When we said 'Alternative Edition,' that's not what we meant."

For those who already own the game, the Lost in Nightmares episode and costume pack will be downloadable starting February 17 on the Xbox 360 and February 18 on the PS3. A second, as-yet untitled episode and costume pack will follow for the 360 and PS3 on March 3 and 4, respectively. The additions will also include a new Mercenaries Reunion mode that will add eight new characters to the action-heavy RE5 feature, each with their own weapon loadouts.

The publisher today also announced Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition, a $50 package set to launch March 9. The Gold Edition includes the acclaimed survival horror game and all of its add-ons, as well as the newly announced updates set for early next year. Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition will be released on a single Blu-ray disc for PS3 owners, while the Xbox 360 edition of the game will come with a code to download the extra content.

One of the biggest features of the Japanese Alternative Edition release is the PS3 version's compatibility with Sony's motion-sensing controller. However, that feature's fate is not yet set in stone for the North American market.

"We're in talks with Sony in North America and Europe about the motion controller," a Capcom representative told GameSpot. "We're still waiting for clarification of their plans for the controller outside of Japan."

is it going to include Versus Mode!

OHHHH THEY BETTER allow the motion-sensor feature in the NA Gold Edish. The sole reason I don't have RE5 yet is because I was waiting for it to arrive on the Wii. RE4 Wii is the best out of the series, and to be honest, motion-sensing controls really are necessary to make Resident Evil gameplay fun; it's completely outdated, chunky and pretty much ridiculous. You can't even *****ng strafe.

I wished you can run and shoot at the same time like in mgs4 and halo

Are these new playable characters for mercenaries mode also available for versus mode?

RE5 has Matrix moves and Ghost Rider (minus the flaming skull)? LOL The dark tunnels look exciting. Peek-a-boo! There are gigantic crocodiles, too.

@zar144, HUNK better be one of them. He's my absolute favorite RE character.

I am stuck at the part where you need to scorch the infested boss (looks like he is covered in tar) a second time with the flame thrower. For the life of me I tried to do what the hint guide said and he keeps regenerating over and over. I am talking 15-20 minutes before I give up. I never have had trouble with any other game like this before?

I just wish this game was a lot more heart pounding like its predecessors.

No love for the PC version? :P. I'm guessing the DLC would fall under the Windows Live category, since RE5 required a Windows ID to play it ;). And, that was the case with Fallout 3 (Steam version) for the DLC.

"Barry, where's Barry"? "Jill, I have something for you! It's very-very powerful!" Oh the classic Resident Evil moments..I'll be definitely getting this.

InfectX Posted Nov 20, 2009 1:50 am GMT "So for 360 it's download only?" The reason is probably because it doesn't fit on the disc. It would need a second disk and would need to be installed because multi disc games are a cluster---- on 360, and due to the fact that HDD is not standard, downloadable is the only way to go. If it's an RPG, you can just swap disks, but if it's a game that adds new models, new cars, new tracks, etc, disc swapping is not practical. Some of the content (what can fit) will be on the disc already. The rest will have to be downloaded. Blame Microsoft, not Capcom.

Great news. I was going to give RE5 a skip entirely when I heard it would only release as DLC. Now I will wait till March and buy the Gold edition.

@Freakboy15 Um Yeah I agree but it wasnt Capcom it was because the Director for the original Re games such as Re4 wasnt involved with Re5.

So for 360 it's download only?

"WTF wheres the the addons for the PC!?" likely to come some time after the console versions release, id say around summer or fall of next year. they would likely sell it as a standalone product though, as opposed to distributing it as dlc.

RE5 was great with the exception of no walking while shooting.. there were also frequent loading times and awkward transitions from cutscenes to game play.... it's these things that made me realize how good RE4 was for it's time (and still is today)

game was great i just didnt like that you cant move while shooting. That drove me crazy. I finished it i just wished i could move like in the others.

Well, despite the complaints about it simultaneously not being enough like RE4 and being too different from RE4, I really enjoyed RE5, especially Co-op. It will be fun to give it another few runs via this update. I have the 360 version to play with my friend, but I hope the PS3 version gets the motion controller update in the US. As a PS3 owner, I would be peeved if a rerelease/DLC has more features in some territories than others for no apparent reason.

I'm still perfectly content with my X360 version of the game.

I sold this game after I beat it and now regret it. I'll probably pick this up. But still... RE4>RE5 times a billion

No thanks, RE5 was nothing but a action game. Totally wrapped up the storyline w.ith a dumb ending. This company forgot this games main thing "survive horror".

Lol dead space is far from scary or being the scariest game ever created. At first you will get a few shocks from dead space, then it starts to get repetitive as the scary scenes in dead space gets recycled in every level of the game. Because of that the game gets really boring . Also the game is real easy especially on the hardest difficulty. A real scary game would be something like humans entertainment game clock tower where you had to run away from scissor man

"...followed by a comprehensive retail release of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game. " Sold. I was originally not going to buy this (or the original) because of it being DLC only, but with a physical copy coming out, I'm going to add this to my collection (and that's despite already having platinum on the original...I love borrowing games).

A shame this re-release is essentially their way of keeping the game from becoming a Greatest/Platinum Hits title for another year.

I hope they have the option to use the motion control on the PS3 version. It would be nice to atleast have the choice to use it.
