Report: This Week's Destiny Beta Includes 4 Story Chapters, Competitive Multiplayer

According to memo reportedly sent to GameStop managers, the beta will be pretty substantial; weighs in at around 12.6GB on Xbox One.

A beta for Bungie's upcoming shooter Destiny begins Thursday, July 17, on PlayStation platforms, and it sounds like the content on offer will be quite substantial. According to a memo reportedly sent to GameStop managers (via Reddit), the Destiny beta will include four story chapters, four competitive multiplayer maps, a cooperative Strike, and a "huge world" to explore.

Previously, Bungie said only that the Destiny beta would include a "diverse sampling of major activities" from the full game. You can guarantee yourself a place in the beta by preordering a copy of the game.

Another Reddit user located the Destiny product page on Xbox One and says the content weighs in at 12.63GB on Microsoft's console. The Destiny beta starts this week for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, before coming to Xbox 360 and Xbox One starting July 23, and ending for all platforms on July 27.

Separately, Bungie writes on its website that Destiny's beta is a genuine beta, and the company expects some things will go wrong. "The Destiny Beta is a test. Make no mistake. This isn't some circus stunt. This is science--and you're the lab rat," the developer said.

"We'd love to tell you that everything will go according to plan, but that wouldn't be any fun. That wouldn't teach us a thing," Bungie added. "Even if the Beta is working perfectly, one of the alpha-geeks in the operations center is gonna kick it to see if it still works. Fortunately, we'll be going to great lengths to keep you informed and keep you in the game."

The full version of Destiny launches September 9 for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. For more on Destiny, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Bungie loves all fans equally... That's why Xbox owners get a week less time on the beta....

So I have the email about choosing my platform but it won't let me yet. Is this because the beta isn't open until thursday?

Does anyone who got it for the PS4 want to play this weekend ? We can stream it on twitch so the x-bots can watch us having fun on the best console while they wait for the beta to finally come to their console.

I love how everyone that Pre-Ordered the game got 4 beta keys to pretty much hand out as they please.... Good move Bungie. Alpha was a blast im really looking forward to the beta and cant wait for a full release.

That's a HUGE download,  I wonder if I'll be able to download that in one day,  Some games takes me over 2 or 3 days to download (DC Universe online is still taking me forever to download and all the new updates don't help).

I'm curious if they will be revealing any more classes and races in the beta? Or are the classes and races we saw in the Alpha the only ones we're ever gonna get? Unless they're waiting for an expansion?

Ah crap, it's not an open beta.  Oh well.

I just hope that beta characters will be kept for the actual game.

As an aside, I may be in the minority, but I don't like betas with story chapters in them, or at least not very many.  Four chapters sounds pretty spoilery.  I mean, give a taste, give a bunch of gameplay, but hey, don't show so many of your cards.

I dunno.  You all disagree?

@ares42ful Stop crying or buy an Xbox...

Why on earth did you go to PS4 anyway if the games you want is on Xbox?

@ibewinnerz  Once the Beta is released go onto the Bungie website, Log in and under the redeemed codes will be your code to download the beta on PS store.

@snyperdons  I hate conventional pvp games simply because it's all rehashed.  Least I buy this and all the Battlefields and COD can goto hell.

@snyperdons Halo's really good, Borderlands is really good, CoD has okay multiplayer. A mix of all of their best components would be amazing (for a FPS at least)

@Sun-Tzu-GE Or how about twitching it so all gamers from all platforms can check it out. The console epeen thing is tiring and silly. I'm sure their will be silly 12 year olds console beefing on your twitch chan. I'd save all of the nonsense for there.

Yeah man; I'll be playing a ton of the beta over the weekend. What's your PSN? Let's get a fire team going!!

@spacecadet25 It nearly is, all anyone has to do is put $5 for a pre-order. You get a code to use at Bungies site, log in and put the code and you will get an email on Jully 17th (maybe a bit before) with an actual beta-code to use on your console's market place.

Don't like the game?, just get your $5 back.

@Silverspeed85  Maybe we'll get minor something for the main game, like a beta-participation gun or suit of armor, but I doubt they'd go as far as a character transfer.

It'd be nice but it'll never happen. I see it as practise for tweaking my Awoken Warlock for when the game finally launches.

@vadagar1 Yeah I've really been in doubt whether to use my beta code or not. Seeing and experiencing the game the first time as a finished game is awesome

spacecadet25

@olddadgamer  It depends.  If the story chapters are the first 4 chapters then I don't mind, I'm just seeing more of the game earlier than the release date.  But if the 4 story chapters are from various parts of the story (especially mid to late story), then I could see a problems with spoilers.

unreal849
unreal849

@olddadgamer  Normally, I'd agree... but you have to consider that Destiny seems to be an MMO/Borderlands hybrid. In both MMO's, and the BL series, individual missions contain fairly miniscule amounts of plot, and there are plenty of side-quest chapters that have no bearing on the greater story.

So, honestly, I'm not expecting any big story spoilers from the mission. It'll be typical "go here, kill this" fare with little to no story exposition attached.

PS has several exclusives that will never port to Xbox.

Just like you wont see Super Mario on Xbox. I've lived and dealt with it and did without it.

If you can't deal with it, buy another system or go to therapy.

Sun-Tzu-GE
Sun-Tzu-GE

@imajinn I could do that but the PS4 owner won't be watching the stream because they actually get to play the game.So it's just a favor for the xbox folk.

@xlost_v3gasx  Only since Halo 4 have I even remote started to play PvP seems this gen doesn't give me motion sickness for some reason. send me a message if you want to hang during beta

@CrouchingWeasel @Silverspeed85 I may be dreaming but I'm sure that I heard someone from Bungie say you got to keep your Beta character at some sort of conference... might have imagined it but I swear I heard it somewhere

Sun-Tzu-GE
Sun-Tzu-GE

@unreal849 @olddadgamer I disagree.According to Bungie,Destiny is a very cinematic game and I think we will have lots of cutscenes in the beta.I don't know why you would assume that it's like Borderlands or an MMO.So my advice is don't play the story mode if you don't want to spoil the game when it's released.

LordCrisp
LordCrisp

@denverdood Why are you saying that to me...?

I know exclusives are gonna stay there... That was the entire point of my comment...

There's a reason I usually has all the systems... Although PS4 hasn't offered anything yet that makes it worth for me to get the PS4

@Sun-Tzu-GE @imajinn Yes, I'm sure every ps4 owner to date has pre-ordered destiny and have the intent to buy it...there's no one whatsoever that might be watching gameplay that is a ps4 owner still unsure of a potential purchase...

Question: do you have friends in real life to boost your self-esteem or are you honestly so insecure and pathetic that you only look to comment sections to try and make your  sad life seem better?

oh wait your asking in a comments section for friends to experience the game with, dumb qestion my b...

@Sun-Tzu-GE

I don't see them letting too much out of the bag during beta. They were pretty tight on story leaks during the alpha & I don't expect too much to change for the beta.

unreal849
unreal849

@Sun-Tzu-GE @unreal849 @olddadgamer  I don't really care about spoilers myself, I was just responding to olddadgamer.

As to the "cinematic" nature... there weren't a whole lot of cinematics in the alpha, just combat with some voiceover thrown in for "story". I'm expecting more of the same from the main game.

And I know, there will be story portions in the main game, but seeing as the main character is a deaf/mute guardian that has to work alongside thousands of near-identical guardians, I'm honestly not expecting a very involved story here.

I do hope I'm wrong, and I'm sure I'll enjoy the game regardless. Bungie hasn't let me down yet.

@unreal849 @Sun-Tzu-GE @olddadgamer Regarding this:

"but seeing as the main character is a deaf/mute guardian that has to work alongside thousands of near-identical guardians, I'm honestly not expecting a very involved story here."

Here's the official description of the game on PSN:

Destiny is the next evolution of the first-person action genre that combines an unprecedented combination of storytelling, cooperative, and competitive modes, with in-depth character creation and a huge variety of weapons, armor, and abilities.

It seems like they are putting emphasis on the story actually.

Sun-Tzu-GE
Sun-Tzu-GE

@unreal849  Is the character mute ? I hope not. I hate it when they do that. It's supposed to make your guardian more personal but all it does is make me feel like a socially awkward r.3tard lol.

dustdevil15

@Sun-Tzu-GE @dustdevil15 @unreal849 @olddadgamer Allow me to break it down for you, MMO means "Massive Multiplayer Online" It means the game will consistently entertain a large volume of players. I would really like to hear your definition of an MMO. What, do you think an MMO has to be like WoW in order for it to be an MMO?

unreal849
unreal849

@Sun-Tzu-GE  All signs and previews point to the character being the standard deaf/mute fps protagonist, which is especially weird because normally characters like that are only experienced from first-person.

In Destiny, however, you'll enjoy looking at your character in cutscenes as he does his best Helen Keller impression.

dustdevil15
dustdevil15

@Sun-Tzu-GE @dustdevil15 @unreal849 @olddadgamer First of all, you completely dodged my question. Second, unlike you, I will be honest, I did not play the Alpha. However, answer me this, will there, or will there not be, a massive volume of players playing with and against each other on a regular basis?

Sun-Tzu-GE
Sun-Tzu-GE

@dustdevil15 @Sun-Tzu-GE @unreal849 @olddadgamer No,there won't be a massive volume of players. You will encounter a few players in the world and more in the tower but not nearly as many as you would in a traditional MMO.An MMO has certain characteristics,a few of which can also be found in Destiny. But not all.Destiny is a sci-fi first person shooter with RPG and MMO elements.

dustdevil15
dustdevil15

@Sun-Tzu-GE @dustdevil15 @unreal849 @olddadgamer This game is projected to sell more copies than the latest COD and Halo titles. I can assure you there will be more than a "few" players in the world and tower. And you can go to any gaming website, it will be labeled as an MMO FPS RPG, at least an RPG FPS. They are not just "elements". You customize all your gear, the way you look, what class and race you are, you get rewards from quests, there is PVP and PVE. It's an MMO FPS RPG, an example of an MMO FPS would be Planetside 2, but there's no story mode in Planetside 2. So please stop desperately trying to contradict me, you're not even stating any valid points to support your case you just keep saying that it contains "elements" from various genres but I'm not even sure what your bizarre idea of "elements" even is.
