Redbox Instant coming to PS3 today

Movie streaming service scheduled to arrive on PlayStation 3 today; subscription is $8/month.

by

Movie streaming service Redbox Instant will be available on PlayStation 3 later today, the company announced today on the PlayStation Blog.

Users will be able to stream thousands of movies and find and reserve new releases for DVD and Blu-ray through the free application.

A Redbox Instant subscription is $8/month and includes access to streaming movies and four rental credits per month.

A free month promotion is available at the Redbox website.

The Redbox Instant app has been available on Xbox Live for months, but the PS3 version will feature an exclusive "Playlist" option. Users can scan through movie selections compiled by various themes, including "Stuff Blowing Up," "Movies With Balls," and "Beards on Film."

Redbox Instant will be available in the "What's New," "My Channels," and "TV/Video Services" sections of the PS3 XMB today, as well as in the Apps section of the PlayStation Store.

This is the same stupid shit as Netflix. If you want to see a new movie you still have to drive to a goddamn kiosk! Why the f can't you stream new releases?

I see the same sad instant titles as Netflix in that picture.

The question is how different is their selection then Netflix?

Yeah... already have Netflix so pass.  Was hoping this was a way to instantly stream new movies for a $1 a piece.  Oh well.

So you stream old movies and get creds to go to a redbox to get the newer ones... How inconvenient.

Don't see a reason to switch from Netflix.

Don't own a PS3, but do you have to pay Sony as well to use a service like this?  Live, you have to have a Gold Membership to access Netflix.

Just went to it and not available outside US.  Do companies know Australia has broadband as well?  We don't even have Netflix still, wish Netflix would realise how much more they would make if they migrated outside the US.

About time. I think it's cool to have as many features available as possible for all systems, but why wait so long after XBox does it to finally implement it?

Playstation users only want games so this is useless.

@cirugo I'm not sure you can rent DVD's or Blu-Ray's through the mail on their $8/month subscription anymore.  I heard that was going to be reserved for higher-paid subscription plans.  Also, their selection may vary, slightly.

@endorbr I was hoping the same thing. How can they compete with Netflix when they offer the same exact good? I still prefer OnDemand for my movies.

@Riddick123 You don't. Free to access, assuming you're paying Netflix for an account.

@DigiTMPS3 Obtaining the licenses to stream Films and TV shows outside the US is a nightmare.  Films are often distributed by different companies in different countries, and whoever distributed it locally has the rights to it.  So Fox may distribute a film in the US, but the same film my be distributed tin Australia by Universal.  So Netfix has to negotiate two totally separate deals with two different companies for the same movie. And that is just talking one film for just Australia.  Think about all the films they have and all the countries and you start to get a picture of what a nightmare it is.

@Arther-la-Blunt New movie releases on Blu-ray usually come out sooner with Redbox and they have a wider selection if I understood correctly.

Redbox offers free disc rental vouchers with their streaming service. It is a nice touch if you have a kiosk nearby and prefer to watch new releases or upgrade to Blu-Ray.

@Arther-la-Blunt probably different contracts with different studios. Cable and satellite is already useless. It's just the big dogs holding on to what they can fort as long as possible.

@ekelly10 Playstation was the do everything box before it was the cool thing to do so disagree.  I was watching DVD on my PS2 long ago and half the use I get out of my PS3 is watching Netflix or Hulu.

Fairly sure he is referring to how many PS fanboys tear apart the XBOne for anything they announce that isn't game related.
