Red Orchestra 2 free on Steam for one day

The realistic WWII shooter can be yours free of charge today.

Realistic World War II shooter Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad is free to download on Steam for the next 24 hours, courtesy of developer Tripwire Interactive.

From now until April 24 at 10 a.m. Pacific, anyone with a Steam account can permanently add the first-person shooter to their library by clicking "Install Game" on its Steam page.

You'll get all of RO2's content, but none of what's included in the game's standalone expansion pack, Rising Storm, which continues to be sold separately for $20. This free release coincides with the recent launch of the Game of the Year edition of Rising Storm that includes all of the available content for Red Orchestra 2 and Rising Storm.

Red Orchestra 2 was originally released in September 2011. It was praised for its realism, although GameSpot's review notes the punishing difficulty that stems from that realism may not be for everyone.

See this is why I love steam. They actually care about their customers by providing them amazing biannual sales and free games. Big AAA publishers like EA and Ubisoft can really learn a lot from them.

better than BF......yep, im going to say it.

make sure you get the japanese expansion pack to.

I prefer ARMA  alittle more because i love hotkeying the Ai and setting them up and love the feeling of playing a real time strategy game and an FPS at the same time. but as a Multiplayer shooter, Red Orchestra 2 is better than battlefield i think. Its like a TRUE BF1942 successor.

This is by far in the top 5 multi-player FPS games released in the past 4 years. It feels highly original, even if the concept has been done to death.

If you even think you might like the idea of a realistic shooter, or if you're looking for something just a bit more hardcore than your normal COD Hardcore but not so much as ArmA, look no further.

This game is amazing and incredibly underrated. Download it.

This game is very different from what most of the people downloading it free are used to.  It will infuriate some, many will say it sucks, I wouldn't be surprised to see a sharp increase in thumbs down on Steam.

Also, I feel kinda bad for the dedicated players, as their matches might be flooded with lots of, let's say annoyances of various kinds :).  I guess if that is happening, at least it won't last long as most will probably quit after a day or two.'

Oh, I forgot to mention, I am pretty sure this coming weekend is a free weekend to try the Rising Storm expansion.  I think that was the reason for giving the base game away.

ITs not a horrible game but it definitely wont appeal to everyone.  I bought it when it released. It had a horrible launch and that combined with its slower paced, campers dream type of gameplay the player base shrunk pretty quick. It does have a loyal, if small base though so most people shouldnt have issues finding a game. Just hope there are populated servers near you because even a little big of lag can ruin the experience.  It was the main reason I quit.  Its a flawed yet satisfying game if you have the patience for it.  I prefer faster paced more arcade shooters though growing up on Quake and Unreal but if you crave that more tactical, slow approach chances are you'll like this game a lot.  Oh and one more thing. the atmosphere in the game is absolutely fantastic and sucks you in. I however couldn't get past some of its other flaws but being its free definitely give it a shot

I had already bought it for the TF2 and KF items (when it was on sale for almost nothing).

Definitely not my kind of game, though.

Best ww2 multiplayer game out there. Its one shot one kill type of game and not easy before you know the maps.

Looks interesting. Don't even have to install it. Just click where the purchase button would be and have it on your library tab. Can't wait to play it though.

@Alex4789123  totally agree, i have a blast on it way more than BF3, nothing satisfy than do a kill using bolt action  (no scope) gun from 700m away

@Chupacabra3332  The Multiplayer is only 9.5 gigs, and don't even complain about 2 mb/second. I'd see that as a miracle. I'm happy when my average is anything above 1. I was thrilled when I was at 1.5 for the whole DL

@Chupacabra3332 Just start the download and you can finish it another time, at least it will be in your library.

@holtrocks  From what I understand, you can play Rising Storm maps, but you don't earn any progress, so those maps are like a demo

@Fabian85  nice didn't know about that but there is a downside I can't do anymore mostly dead kills. Bonus points if you get the quote.

@Monkey_N1nga Still not sure what you mean, do you have to buy multiplayer seperate? I thought it was a multiplayer only game?

@DoogyDonDoogy @STrugglingFool  Yes, because realistically you're gonna be called a camper for wanting to not stick your neck out in dangerous areas. I can just see the soldiers downrange right now complaining about camping Taliban militia, complaining about grenade spam and noobs messing up their shots as we speak.

STrugglingFool
STrugglingFool

@DoogyDonDoogy @STrugglingFool Sorry you feel that way. If I see an enemy I'm not going to give my position away until I feel there aren't any more or there is a clear path to the next cover area. You play the way you think is best and you can post back how that worked out for you. I died so many times just trying to run up that hill.

@Hammershock6 @Monkey_N1nga  when i got the game, it gave me the multiplayer and singleplayer part of the game, along with 2 betas. Overall i had 4 things on my library when i got the game.
