Red Faction film cast revealed

Terminator 2's Robert Patrick, Stargate Universe's Brian J. Smith lead SyFy made-for-TV movie cast; Peabody winner Michael Nankin directing.

"Transmedia" has been a popular buzz word at recently rebranded THQ after the publisher announced in April 2010 that it would be partnering with the SyFy Network on a made-for-TV film based on the Red Faction property. Titled Red Faction: Origins, the film and its game accompaniment, Red Faction: Armageddon, are both due in May, and THQ and SyFy today announced the two-hour live-action film's official cast.

Leading the cast is Robert Patrick (Terminator 2, Double Dragon), who assumes the role of Red Faction: Guerrilla protagonist Alec Mason, 25 years after the events portrayed in that game and 12 years since his enemies murdered his wife, Lyra (Tamzin Merchant, The Tudors). In fact, Red Faction: Origins is set between the events of Guerrilla and the upcoming Armageddon.

Red Faction is in for a busy May.

Brian J. Smith (Stargate Universe) will star as Alec's son, Jake, who is an officer in the Red Faction Militia. As the story goes, Jake learns that his sister, who was kidnapped 12 years prior, is not only alive, but also a member of a powerful invading force.

THQ and SyFy did not provide roles for the additional cast, but it did offer names. Gamers can expect to see Kate Vernon (Battlestar Galactica), Danielle Nicolet (The Starter Wife), Gareth David-Lloyd (Torchwood), and Devon Graye (Dexter) playing various roles in the film.

Peabody Award-winning director Michael Nankin (Caprica, Battlestar Galactica) will helm Red Faction: Origins. The script is being penned by Andrew Kreisberg (Warehouse 13). THQ director of fiction development Paul DeMeo (The Rocketeer, The Flash) created the story. Production is slated to begin in Bulgaria this week in advance of May's SyFy premiere.

I was prematurely going to post a horrifying "SyFy" rant (seriously, what does SyFy stand for?) but this soundsl ke it could be pretty good...

@gashoe13 I know who he is but he's a lvl 3 actor if not worse

@CoRINI Dude... Robert Patrick is the actor who played as the liquid metal Terminator back in the classic sci-fi movie Terminator 2... It is one of the best science fiction movies of all time, so if you ever have time, watch it! It was by James Cameron (Avatar), and it was amazing at the time. Get your facts straight before claiming someone is a nobody.

SyFy has adopted the MTV model of catering to whiny pregnant teenage girls so this is not going to turn out well

Games should just stay on our videogames and not on another disappointing movie.

@death775 Are you travelling to the past, walking past, or commenting to "pass" on the show?

Pros: Robert F***in Patrick Cons: TV Movie Bottom Line: If you keep your expectations low, I bet it would be decent. Might even expand to a high budget TV series in the future

i wonder what the budget will be, i know budget isnt everything but this is going to be on the syfy channel so budget in this case is everything either way im bettting its gonna be crap they should have made a big budget movie for the cinema not for tv total recall...ish

I really don't know How to feel about this film. On the one hand I like Red Faction as a game and think it would have great potential as a movie. On the other hand all movies on SyFy always suck. they always make low budget corny B-movies that are neither good or funny just shameful. So I really don't know how this will turn out.

@BigJohnWV Just like you, I read the article title I got pretty excited, then I seen "Made for TV" and "SyFy", I turned from excited to majorly disappointed, I thought they meant theatrical movie, I'll pass on this one.

Oh man talk about a dilemma. I see the words "Made for TV" and "SyFy" and cringe...on the other hand Robert Patrick. I have a feeling he is going to be the only thing worth watching.

"Production is slated to begin in Bulgaria this week in advance of May's SyFy premiere." 4 months, from first slate to final release? I am suddenly very pessimistic. But I'll probably watch it anyway - I like the Red Faction universe.

Look... EVERYONE NEEEEEEDS to watch this - Even if it kills you... Just turn your tv on syfy during the premier and mute it if you don't want to listen... If video game movies appear to be successful, they will make more with higher budgets and they will become less and less terribad until they are actually good... SO WATCH IT! NOW!

how do you say, "Straight to Blu-Ray and DvD"? **EDIT** LOL, the headline says "film cast" which is totally misleading, this is going straight to TV, not film.

It will probably be bad, but I don't care. I like most of the cheesy movies on SyFy. I'm sure I will catch it one of the 300 times they have it on the first month.lol

Someone must have a lot of money to waste. Making a movie based on an ok game seems like a bad investment, but at least it will create jobs, so you guys knock yourselves out!

I don't remember anybody ever asking for a Red Faction movie. Why the hell is this being made?

Merex760

I'd rather see more Caprica and Stargate Universe than a Red Faction made-for-TV movie, SyFy.

RedSoxfan67

Robert Patrick is great, but knowing its a syfy movie it will blow as all the syfy original movies do, and that is the truth.
