Red Faction: Armageddon preorders open Battlegrounds

GameStop, Amazon advanced purchasers earn free download for vehicle-based arena combat title; Best Buy gets in-game perks, Walmart has comics.

When it comes to surviving the end of times, having a leg up might not be so bad. Today, THQ announced preorder incentives for its upcoming sci-fi shooter Red Faction: Armageddon that confer a variety of retailer-specific in-game bonuses for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC game.

GameStop and Amazon are offering perhaps the sweetest survival kit for console gamers, as the two retailers will be offering a free copy of Red Faction: Battlegrounds. Expected to be available during the first week of April, Battlegrounds is a multiplayer-oriented, top-down, vehicle-based arena combat game. Those who don't preorder from GameStop or Amazon can download the game through Xbox Live or the PSN for $10.

Red Faction meets Mad Max in Battlegrounds.

Beyond Battlegrounds, GameStop preorderers will also receive the in-game Commando Pack, which includes an armored uniform, a plasma thrower, and laser pistols. However, Amazon prepurchasers aren't slated to receive any additional items.

Those who prebuy the game at Best Buy will be afforded the Recon Pack. Included in this in-game add-on are the stealth uniform, the electrically charged arc welder weapon, and the XNG-5000, which fires homing missiles. Lastly, Walmart preorderers have the only bit of real-world schwag: a 24-page Red Faction comic book and strategy guide.

Red Faction: Armageddon will be available in North America on May 31. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

glad this was listed out here...I might just wait for the inevitable price drop and then get this.

These tie-ins have gotten even more ridiculous now that nearly every retailer has some "exclusive" content. And for the super-fan who wants to have it all, what is he supposed to do? Buy a copy of the game from every retailer that has an exclusive? I mean, how "exclusive" is your tie-in when every other retailer has one?

I HATE retailer-specific tie-in's.

I still prefer to preorder from Newegg for $49.99. Every new release gets a preorder window at that price. Not getting the exclusive content is worth $10 to me, and you still get a generic preorder bonus for a new gun or something in the 1st run copies anyways.

Great more of this exclusive crap. Well i'm not buying this game until steam comes out with some deal for it anyway.

The original Red Faction was revolutionary last generation, but the series has slipped in my eyes. I'll have to hear some good things about this one before i give it a go. Too many good games out there to waste my money (and time!) on a so-so THQ title.

il give this one a try, since you can never judge a game before experiencing it yourself(except stalin vs matians, its just load a crap) but the previous one had poor controls, and the environment needed alot more. it felt like half a game

hard to find match online is my only complaint against volition's red faction guerrilla. At least you can rarely see crackers online.

Steam gives you Guerilla and it's cheaper to begin with. Steam ftw.

Red Faction was such an underrated game it's not even funny. I got to rank 33 on the leader boards. It was amazing for what it was. Not only was it a 3rd person shooter, you had amazing destructible buildings and backpacks that could change the course of the gameplay with every map. If this holds up, it will be just as fun, if not better. Too many people want games that are only in first-person. This is ashame to see it for $10, but it's still an amazing and bad ass game. This game was so far under the radar it's not even funny.

I want Armageddon but the fact that it's mission based and no longer free-roam is heart wrenching....

I saw the last Red Faction at my gamestore today for $10, so I'll wait for this game to get cheaper.

I got Red Faction Guerrilla free when I bought Darksiders THQ should give away another game free when you buy Red Faction Armageddon and not some dumb download game a full retail game then I'd buy Armageddon but other then that I'm not to interested in Armageddon as I got bored with Guerrilla pretty quickly I never even finished it.

My favorite preorder incentives are the ones on steam. Preorder a game and either A) You get 5% to 10% off or B) You get the game's prequel for free. (also you get some hats for TF2 but who cares at this point) This "withholding content unless you preorder" trend needs to stop... if its just a different skin or model then fine, like a new uniform or something... but taking guns away from us is only hurting the game, even if it is helping gamestop's wallet.

It may not be much, but hey a free game is a free game. Anything is better then getting armor or extra characters or something that should be in the game no matter what.

I played that Battlegrounds game when they had a Beta. It sucks so I'll pass on the preorder and just wait until this Red Faction is $20 like the other one.

Pretty cool, but I don't know; is it enough to make me preorder?

As long as the bonus weapons/armor can be DL'ed later for a decent price, and there is still a decent amount of in-game weapons, then I'm fine with it; however, if the bonus weapons account for half or more of the total roster...I won't be happy.
