Red Alert 3 PC suffers Uprising

Command & Conquer spin-off RTS from EA sees first stand-alone, single-player expansion pack for desktop gamers in March.

by

A hallmark of the real-time strategy genre is expansion packs, and today EA announced the first for its Command & Conquer spin-off Red Alert 3. Subtitled Uprising, the expansion pack extends the single-player campaign in Red Alert 3, which saw release in October, but won't require the original game to play. Uprising will be downloadable exclusively for the PC beginning in March.

Ze plane, ze plane!

Uprising picks up shortly after the events in Red Alert 3, in which the Soviets have been routed, the Empire of the Rising Sun is in disarray, and the Allies battle corruption within their own ranks. The expansion includes one abbreviated campaign dedicated to each faction, as well as a bonus Empire storyline that follows the rise of the faction's psionic decimator, Commando Yuriko Omega.

In addition to the minicampaigns, Uprising will bolster Red Alert 3's offerings with the new Commander's Challenge mode. In it, players will grapple with 50 challenge missions, each of which features unique rules and win conditions. The expansion will also include an unspecified number of additional battle units, as well as a variety of new live-action cutscenes featuring the likes of Gemma Atkinson and Ivana Milicevic. EA also teased that a variety of new stars will also make their debut, promising to announce names in the near future.

I say downlaod is stupid. Is it a purchase download? If so, i say no. If it's free, good for them, i might download it. But first of all, i find downloading games incredibly stupid, if they're bigger then one gigabyte.

I dont care how bad the game is, i am still gonna buy it :D

"Meh more promising RTS titles are coming now, Starcraft 2 and W4K Dawn of War 2." Starcraft 2 won't be out for a long time (late 2009 at the earliest) so it's not like the RA3x is competing against it.

"Been there, done that. Zero Hour, Kain's Wrath, Uprising....do you see a pattern?" If you liked the original game, would you not want more of it? Gears 2 and Halo 2, 3 and other sequels are no different. Been there, done that.

All it needs is extra MP stuff and cost £10-15 and I'm in.

I think this game would get more attention if it weren't an RTS and instead be a 3rd or 1st person game

I promised myself, I'll never buy another Red Alert as long as EA is making it. And, I hate to break my promises, so I'll skip it 'cause its gonna suck as original has sucked. :)

Sounds cool, hope there are some good sub-factions (like USA and UK/Europe due to the Allied conflict) and I hope this challenge mode is as addictive as the Zero Hour challenge mode, which kept me playing it for years - even after i got and completed C+C 3

It looks promising and I can't wait for it to come out. My only question is, is it download only?? It probably isn't but they really didn't clarify that. They just say it "will be downloadable exclusively for hte PC beginning in March." That's where i get confused.

*** nayoop said : Iconnux, hello. What is the big deal about SecuRom? Given the ludicrous amount of piracy in the PC industry, why should companies not protect themselves? A certain number of installs does not seem unreasonablle, when an e-mail can unlock more. *** There have been technical problems with people installing Securom. Securom won't uninstall automatically when you uninstall a game. I don't like being treated like a criminal when I purchase a game. Also I purchase a game and I don't rent it. I don't want to beg for more installs every time I reinstall windows or add new hardware. Quite simply I am voting with my wallet and I won't purchase any products with Securom no matter how good the game is. Like I said I wanted to buy the game but there are many other gaming options for my dollar. Securom does NOTHING to stop piracy, it only irritates legitimate customers. Personally, I buy all my PC games from Steam because I get unlimited installs, yes I know steam is a form of DRM but it is a DRM that is unintrusive. I want developers to get paid, but if they treat me like a criminal, then they have lost a sale.

Galahaut : What are you talking about when it comes to world of goo? Its been ranked best game nobody played by oh so many sites. Reason for that is because nobody purchased it.

I have high hopes for this expansion @nuconteaza you idiot, cnc generals zero hour was a great expansion pack. (one of the best ever imo) it added some 25 new units and powers, 9 new generals (play styles basically), new missions and storylines, and that mode that i forget the name of where u have to beat three generals successively. plus new achievements to keep u toiling away

Meh more promising RTS titles are coming now, Starcraft 2 and W4K Dawn of War 2. Red Alert 3 can not stand against this competition... Red Alert 3 was not even that great its predecessor from Westwood was better

"Given the ludicrous amount of piracy in the PC industry, why should companies not protect themselves?" - Oh, probably because the protection does absolutely nothing to stop piracy, only annoys *legitimate, paying customers*, and is a pure waste of money? "A certain number of installs does not seem unreasonablle, when an e-mail can unlock more." Oh, really? You do not see anything unreasonable about having to beg a company to use a product you purchased the way you want to? "Does it lower piracy levels for games that use it?" Umm, if anything, it increases piracy levels. Pay attention. "If so, it seems to be reasonable." Haha. "I am not too concerned about EA's wallet, but smaller game devs need money to continue making new games." Oh, you mean like the developers of World of Goo, whose game was released without any form of DRM, but was still successful? "Go to e-bay, you will see thousands and thousands of PC games being sold over and over again, and the people who worked hard to make the game get nothing." Awful logic. The game developers, first, already got paid when they made the game. Next, the games were already purchased. Welcome to the First Sale Doctrine.

Ha forget Red Alert this X-pack is not worth Starcraft 2 competition. Both will be good enough for their respective fans.

rock_solid is another person who thinks starcraft > all that's bullsmack... you know... Command and Conquer is what redefined RTS games... much like how COD 2 did with the "no health bar"... (yes it was cod 2 not Gears... stupid fanboys) CNC RA and RA2 were amazing and when EA took over it.... it was crap... im disappointed with RA 3, but CNC 3 was actually pretty decent... EA needs to work on it......but it's EA so i dont expect much..

people should never have even bothered with RA3. just wait for starcraft 2.

Iconnux, hello. What is the big deal about SecuRom? Given the ludicrous amount of piracy in the PC industry, why should companies not protect themselves? A certain number of installs does not seem unreasonablle, when an e-mail can unlock more. PC gamers treat this like it is a Human Rights issue or something. Does it lower piracy levels for games that use it? If so, it seems to be reasonable. I am not too concerned about EA's wallet, but smaller game devs need money to continue making new games. Go to e-bay, you will see thousands and thousands of PC games being sold over and over again, and the people who worked hard to make the game get nothing. Anyway, RA3 is the first C&C since generals that I enjoy, I may pick this up?

Single-player, alas no co-op? Shame, wont get the expansion pack then.

this is a love it or hate it series that hasn't changed much over the years, including the regular release of expansion packs shortly after the main game releases. it's a great series, except for Tiberium Sun. I have Tiberium Wars, got it for free from EA after the Rock Band 1 peripheral debacle, and it's a good cnc game. They remain consistant and loyal to the fanbase, so this shouldnt be surprising either.

I really wanted RA3 but wouldn't buy it because of Securom, Sorry EA If this includes Securom I will pass on it as well...

nuconteaza

Wow, they're finally giving us the entire game. It's not an expansion, it's the final version of the game. They just cut it in 2 to make people buy more. At least i hope it's gonna be like zero hour for generals.

Ebougile
Ebougile

Unfortunately, if this stand-alone expansion has the same type of copy protection as RA3, then I will pass on it as well. I used to be a hardcore PC gamer, but have hardly touched a PC game at all in the past year or so. I think being treated like a pirate when I go out and buy my games is a big part of it. No matter I guess, I've turned to the consoles.
