According to Japanese PC game site 4gamer.net, details on Gravity Corporation's massively multiplayer online role-playing game Ragnarok Online 2 will be unveiled at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show (September 16-18). Closed beta testing is expected to begin shortly thereafter. The site reports the news was announced by Gravity CEO Kim Jung-Ryool during a Ragnarok Online fan event that took place over the weekend in Seoul, Korea.
The sequel was first announced at KAMEX (Korea Amuse World Expo) last November, with a trailer showing full 3D MMORPG gameplay, unlike the current Ragnarok Online, which features 2D characters on a 3D background. Kim told 4gamer.net that the final product will look completely different from the KAMEX trailer, although he did not elaborate on his statement.
The current Ragnarok Online operates in 37 countries across six continents. The game has been a particular hit in the Asian countries with its cute anime-styled graphics and low hardware requirements. Gravity has not yet disclosed what it plans to do with the current Ragnarok Online after the launch of Ragnarok Online 2.
The team working on Ragnarok Online 2 includes developers from the original Ragnarok Online and Arcturus, a PC stand-alone role-playing game codeveloped by Gravity, Sonnori, and Falcom.
