Radical unveils Prototype

Latest issue of Game Informer takes wraps off of studio's new hyperviolent free-roaming action game coming to 360, PS3 in 2008.

It's all in the hoodie.

In 2005, Radical Entertainment gave Big Green his due in The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. The well-received Grand Theft Auto-esque open-world action game dropped players into the raging green giant's shoes (if he wore any) and turned them loose to sate their appetite for destruction.

Taking the free-roaming destruction concept to its logical next step, Radical revealed its next project in the August edition of Game Informer. Titled Prototype, Radical's newest is a hyperviolent action game that follows the exploits of Alex Mercer, who has acquired superhuman abilities as the result of a science experiment gone awry.

Radical's unique twist on the Grand Theft Auto style of play is that as Mercer kills people, he absorbs their memories, abilities, and appearance. As a result, players gain the ability to shapeshift into any one they've absorbed, and they also gain knowledge and skills. Absorbing dead foes and innocent bystanders alike also augments Mercer's biomass, making him stronger and giving him the ability to morph his body into a weapon or harden his skin in defense.

Surf's up.

Prototype will use Radical's proprietary fourth-generation Titanium game engine. The game takes place in Manhattan, and depending on whether players employ brute force or stealth tactics in the game, the city either acts as a labyrinthine maze or becomes a decimated warzone.

Prototype will also feature online two-player co-op, where players each use their own version of Mercer. In online games, players will be able to tag-team to use special moves and powers.

According to Game Informer, Prototype will take to the streets in 2008 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. However, the ever-astute retail radar spotted a GameStop product page for a PC version. Radical had not returned a request for comment as of press time. The game has not yet been rated, though given the subject matter, an M for Mature seems all but assured.

Aperion89 you are not the only person who went **** yeah i read the article on it on game informer and thats the first thing i thought/said. i cant wait for this game and no you idiots who think that this is a crakdown/gta ripoff it is nothing like thos games i personally think that anyone who has to say a game looks stubid without playing it are retarted gaming is all about trying somthing new and inovative somthing unseen before and you know what i dont care a game may seem stubid at first but then you get more into it you see its a good game/idea ( im talking about the prince of persia games every one seems to hate those games) so dont think its a stubid game just yet give it a chance...

hey Incubus420...I need tell you some words... 1st: EVERY game becomes repetitive with some months of hardcore gaming... 2nd: Tell me a thing...do you like Crackdown-like games? if not, don't play this. 3rd: Games I'll not inovate, cuz we already have action, free roaming, etc.... 4rd: If you know a NEW game style/type, tell us, maybe you can create a very good game that you can like it... 5rd: OF COURSE there's a limited amount of memories and skills that you can absorb...everything needs a limit...to have a unlimited number of this skills/memories we need to have 4,5 DVDs for this game think before say bad things of games that you didn't played... that's it...

This is going to be stupid...I bet there will be a limited amount of memories and powers you can get. Essentially only allowing you to absorb a specifiec type of person. Thus becoming repetitive just like all the other GTA type free roam games. If this can hold a storyline then it will be good. But if this game is just a "Mutant Crackdown" then who cares, give me guns and bombs NOT my long arms!

i'm not to sure about this, it sounds good on paper so far but only time will tell if it's going to be anything special

This game looks awesome and im tierd of everyone always saying games are GTA ripoffs just because they are open world.....now saints row was a GTA ripoff but saying Prototype is a GTA ripoff is just stupid. It looks nothing like it.

everyones first reaction to this game seems to be gta clone or crackdown ripoff am I the only person who's first thought was **** yeah! a who goes there?/the thing/parasyte game where you actually get to play as the monster" yes there have been freeroaming superhero games before (even gta: san andres had superpower codes like super punch/jump) but really thats because there a great combination would you really want a game where you have all this power and are confined to a linear level? also superstrength and agility are fine but finally a game with favorite comic book superpower bio-mass manipulation.

Read the new GI, I'm putting this on the top of my list along with Fallout 3. It sounds like Crackdown (although I hate "profiling" games), mixed with a much darker and modern day Assassins Creed look, and a touch of The Maw (last level) from the original Halo (in terms of their being three warring sides). To say the least I'm excited.

Sounds interesting. I'll keep an eye on this game for future details.

veveqa: you seem to know so much more about GTA4 then everyone else. I don't see how you can judge a game that we know so little about, in fact we probably know more about this game and re5 and a bunch of other games coming out next year than we know about GTA4. all I know is GTA:SA was awesome, it was easily the best of the series. they always do a good job with the acting and story and it's always fun to just run around and shoot stuff up.

How in the hell is the hulk like GTA? Just because a game is free-roaming doesn't make it a GTA clone. Think some writers are just lazy with the adjectives. Hulk had more in common with Rampage than GTA. Sandbox maybe but GTA clone... no.

Looks intense. the last issue of GI actually talked about the game a bit though.

I agree that this does sound a lot like "Infamos", also to be released in 2008. It's going to be interesting to see which game is the better one.

Considering that Rockstar seem certain to wreck the GTA franchise with GTA IV, I'm keen to see how these "GTA clones" do. This one sounds potentially particularly amusing, if done right, and with coop-play, there's another big bonus. I mean, what do you want to play, GTA IV which seems to be all about doing extremely boring things, for example, to kill a lawyer, you cannot lurk outside his office until he leaves at night and shoot him in the head as he gets into his car, or otherwise plan it yourself, you must instead: A) Phone him up and chat with his office. B) Go to an internet cafe and fill out a job application. C) Go buy a nice neat suit. D) Go to his office and wait for your interview. E) Take him somewhere quiet and quietly kill him. Apparently there is no alternative to this either, and Rockstar think it's "fun". Oh great... Sounds like real "fun" to me... Frankly, Rockstar, if I wanted to play a particularly dull stealth game combined with Barbie's Dress-up, well, I wouldn't be buying Grand Theft Auto, which is, y'know, about stealing cars, getting to machine-gun battles with the cops, and so on. This whole deal of having superpowers, absorbing people's abilities and forms and so on sounds about thirty times as exciting as the "let's be very careful and slow" deal of Grand Theft Auto IV, and I'm keen to see more of it. Chirico_Cuvie - It is a bit FotM, but that's because it's a basically good idea, and the GTA franchise itself is faltering.

So GTA with super powers in an original setting is the flavor of the month is it? First Crackdown, now Infamous and Prototype. Not to mention the licensed superhero games of the past couple years. Crackdown was OK but it was missing something, so much to do but no reason to do it. Let's hope these do more with the premise.

the game seems different. unlike the extra ordinary FPS type game. i'll stay posted on this title

What's the downside of absorbing all these memories and powers. Will there be some sort of balancing. Otherwise you would end up like Syler (from Heroes) and the game would be too easy.

Sounds like it will be way to easy. I mean you can easily kill a civilian, then become stronger for it? I prefer the civies to be unimportant, thanks.
