QuakeCon plans Doom 3 tourney

QuakeCon 2004 will be hosting what will be perhaps the most level playing field for a gaming tournament ever. Organizers of the ninth annual Quake tournament, held in Grapevine, Texas, announced today that they will be conducting the first-ever Doom 3 tournament at this year's event.

Doom 3 is still without an official release date, which means that all 128 players in the tournament at the August 12-15 event may be laying their hands on the game for the very first time. Even if id's new PC shooter makes it to the recently hinted-at release date of August 3, that still doesn't leave much time to practice. Registration for the Doom 3 tournament will take place at QuakeCon on August 12.

Outside of that bright spotlight, QuakCon will be continuing as normal, with Quake III one-on-one and capture-the-flag tournaments running during the event. Registration for both the 256-persion one-on-one tournament and the 32-team capture-the-flag tournament begins at 8:00PM Central time on July 11.

Nvidia is posting big bucks for this year's convention, offering a combined $150,000 in cash and prizes for the three tournaments. The Doom 3 tournament will carry special prizes, but they are being kept secret until the convention this August. The organizers of QuakeCon would only offer up that they are "fast."
