Id Software's John Carmack releases Quake Source Code for the holidays.

With Quake III Arena in the hands of eager FPS gamers and its creator, John Carmack, preparing for his upcoming wedding, it seems that id is out with the old and looking ahead to the new. As proof the company has released the source code for Quake to programmers who want to discover what makes one of the best first-person shooters of all time tick.

Carmack officially announced the Quake Source Code release by saying that the company has decided to push back the release of the source code for Quake III Arena to a later date (after the upcoming Quake III point release).

As with most source code of this nature, the code cannot be used for revenue purposes. So, if you were planning to sit down for long nights of coding sessions this holiday season, here's as good a reason as any.
