What we heard: People just love rumors about Double Fine's next game. Speculation and rumors about Brütal Legend have been kicking around the Internet for months. And with that game just announced last week, rumors have already started building about the developer's next game, supposedly a sequel to its last game.

The "projects" page on Double Fine Productions' Web site was recently updated with a teaser banner bearing the likeness of Psychonauts star Raz, with the words "Coming Soon" pasted across it. Speculation on blog sites ran the gamut from a full-fledged sequel to a Wii port of the original.

Double Fine founder Tim Schafer has made no secret of his desire to make another Psychonauts, but a new Psychonauts project doesn't make sense right now. Double Fine no doubt has its hands full making Brütal Legend. Even if it didn't, there's still the issue of what publisher would be willing to pick up the franchise.

The original received a warm critical reception, but nothing close to what one would expect given the game's increasingly hallowed reputation, and it sold poorly. The game's original publisher, Majesco, has retreated into the handheld and casual publishing business, so it would seem an unlikely candidate. Meanwhile, other publishers are likely to look at the original game's sales and have difficulty justifying a port or a sequel right now, no matter how many forumgoers profess their undying love for Psychonauts.

For Schafer to ever get another Psychonauts made, he will need more leverage with publishers. The best way to get that leverage is to make a game that sells boatloads and avoids creating a stigma that Double Fine makes critically lauded commercial flops. Given its over-the-top violence, easily grasped story (rock n' roll roadie takes hell by storm), and celebrity tie-in (Jack Black plays the roadie), Brütal Legend seems like an ideal candidate for Double Fine's first big hit.

But until the company has such a game under its belt and can point to sales figures that will convince publishing executives the studio's games are a good investment, don't expect much news on the Psychonauts front.

The official story: "I wish! No, we are just putting up a new page for the old (Excellent) game. Sheesh. How many games do these people think we can do at once?"--Tim Schafer.

Bogus or not bogus?: Sadly, bogus.

"They wont make a psyconauts 2 because the sale of the original game were so low. if we get more people interested in the game they will have no choice but to make a second one" Unfortunately the world doesn't work like that...

No. Somethings up! Where there is smoke.... Just read that one of the IGN au staff have done a interview with Tim Schafer and its "under embargo". Everybody knows about Brutal Legend - So why the embargo? I think port of an old game.... Rumors are so cool - you can say any cr.p! http://blogs.ign.com/Patch_IGN_AU/

Psychonauts was one of the best last gen platformers. Please, Please make a sequel!!!!

Maybe if they didn't throw a veil of secrecy on all their projects while they're in development, they would sell more than fourteen copies. P.S. Psychonauts was a fantastic game...but a fantastic game that nobody plays is kind of a win-lose. (For them, not me. I had a blast!)

hey, Tim Chaffer is reminds me of Hideo Kojima. there could be a sequel in the works, but would rather not have it be so public right away. the dude reminds me of a mad scientist.

Could care less. This guy puts out over rated, deformed graphics underselling "different because it just is" type crap. He's like the Tim Burton of the gaming world. Everyone calls him a genius in public but in reality in the background they say he's a weirdo. Never cared about the first game, don't care for the second.

I don't think a sequel would be a good idea...psychonauts, much like Grim Fandango, was great by itself and needed no sequel. There's no point in milking that idea any more. Besides, the game did not sell very well making a sequel a poor choice for the publishers, although everyone I know, including myself, that has played the game has loved it.

I've always wanted to play this game, so I went to on ebay and I found some on there. They were all bid on, so I'm guessing this article and others like it have sparked interest in the game. I used the BuyItNow option, so it should be on it's way soon.

Psychonauts, a game that everyone loved, received great reviews, but somehow was bought by too small a number of people... They'd have to get the publishers really drunk to consent to a psychonauts sequel already, unfortunately... Injustice!

I feel like I'm the only one that doesn't like Tim Schafer. Brutal Legend seems like an obvious response to Metalocalypse, and Psychonauts was interesting but the platforming was horribly frustrating and wasn't as funny as everyone said it was.

Psychonauts was a perfect storm of everything critics love and audiences don't give a crap about. If you were putting on a clinic of how to impress art-house intellectuals, Psychonauts is a great Exhibit A.

Forget Brutal Legend! Schafer needs to bring Psychonauts 2 out.

For anybody who has never played Psychonauts but are thinking of doing so, heed this warning. Psychonauts IS a good game, but don't go in expecting anything revolutionary. If you like a good platformer that has a good story, weird environments, and funny and quirky characters, you will like the game. It won't blow your mind or anything, but it is a solid game for the all the reasons above. That said, I would love them to make a sequel.

if this is truly bogus then i want to tear out my spleen. or maybe ill have me and 20 of my friends buy a copy of this game GO SCHAFER!

you know what Psychonauts is a damn fine game .. but it doesn't need a sequel .. been there done that .. much like a sequel to Grim Fandango .. half of me wnats it .. the other half knows that the story has run it's course. Now a Psychonauts comic .. maybe that wouldbe cool for 12 issues !

Tim's creation always good (or may I say, excellent) at playing, but not selling (Grim Fandango and Psychonauts didn't sell very good). Hope Brutal Legend will be both good. Btw, reading Tim's blog on Double Fine's homepage is pretty funny.

Valmier I still need to play the original one, but, based on what I know about it, a sequel would be a good move... why do all these developers take so freaking long to make sequels to games that everyone loves? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Because bad sequels = bad rep for developers
