Double Fine has announced a new Psychonauts virtual reality game that will be released for the PlayStation VR. Titled Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, the game is set after the conclusion of 2005's Psychonauts but takes place before the events of Psychonauts 2. In it, players will assume the role of Psychonauts protagonist Raz as he embarks on a mission to rescue Truman Zanotto.

Speaking to GameSpot in an interview, game director Tim Schafer explained, "the player is going to go on this virtual reality rescue mission to rescue Truman Zanotto. They're going to be using clairvoyance to move around, and telekinesis and pyrokinesis, a lot of 'esises,' and psi powers to explore the kidnapper's lair and free Truman."

The game will be a standalone title and is not part of Double Fine's crowdfunding campaign for Psychonauts 2. In it, Raz will be "able to project his psyche outward so he can actually enter other people's minds and see the world from their perspective ... to be able to navigate through space that way and still be able to pick things up and burn them."

"It's not a VR treatment of the original game or VR treatment of the second game, it is its own unique content," Schafer affirmed.

Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin is scheduled for release in the second half of 2016. Double Fine also announced Psychonauts 2 today. Check out our full interview with Tim Schafer for more details on the game including returning characters, the release date, and more.
