PSP UMD-to-PS Vita transfer program not coming to US - Report

Sony won't be offering backward compatibility of physical media to new handheld in North America.

by

Backward compatibility is one of the most important features gamers look for in new gaming hardware, but it appears as if Sony won't be accommodating with the PlayStation Vita. Having announced a PSP UMD import program in Japan, Sony has reportedly confirmed for Kotaku that North American gamers will not be able to transfer their physical media to the PS Vita.

The UMD just can't catch a break.

In Japan, the Passport program lets PS Vita owners download PSP games from the PlayStation Store by proving UMD ownership. UMD ownership is accomplished by inserting the game into their PSPs and then registering the product online.

The transfer process isn't free, and the fee varies dramatically by title. Many full-price games command a fee of ¥1,000 ($13); titles confirmed to be in this price range include Dirt 2, Gran Turismo, and Patapon 3. However, one Pachi-slot title from Daito has a fee of ¥2,400 ($31) attached to it. Sony has said that the UMD Passport program will encompass some 200 games in Japan.

The North American PS Vita won't be entirely bereft of backward compatibility. All PSP games purchased through the PS Store, including Minis and PSOne Classics, are compatible with the PS Vita.

Sony had not responded to a request for comment as of press time. The PS Vita is slated to launch in North America on February 22.

The first sentence says it all. I'm slowly realizing why Sony has a lot of haters.

I wasn't planing to get rid of my psp anyway, but it is sad to see sony not listening to their customers.

As the new PSP is coming out and a massive price cut of the PSP titles is about to hit selfs, there is a last chance to make a small profit by selling your PSP and UMDs. As atm the PSV only has 2-3 interesting titles, i would like the right to acquire GT, GOW and MGS for my Vita, so they keep me busy till more titles appear. Since i already own this titles, i ought to at least given the right to buy them again for a reduced price. PSP and PSV are portable devices and while i m in a journey, i cant carry them both with me. 2 PSV and 2-3 PSP titles in it would be enough for a holiday run. For ex i never liked the childish and unrealistic Ridge racer and wipeout series and i consider the pso GT a better racing game for my Vita, having to pay a full price yet again, just doesnt feel right...

Well regardless of backwards compatiability or not, Ill be getting my vita a week before launch. I loved my PSP, but it was a dying tech they were using lets be honest, UMD were never least imo worth a nickel. They had little memory capacity, its like a CD-ROM v Blu Ray, which obviously Blu is far superior bar none regarding available space that is. That fact is now that Sony has went disc-less, they can use the man power to put more into a game, without the limitations of a disc. Load times ALONE will improve game performance. So move on with the times, just because 1 out of 5 people wont be buying a Vita, doesnt mean it wont far surpass PSP, then again doesnt say it will either. However my money is on once it hits the ground running might be on of the better handhelds on the market.

I expected this, when they announced PS1 games on psp and ps3 nobody complained saying that they already bought FF VII or metal gear for ps1 and why pay again to download it. obviously nobody register their ps1 cds and you cannot put a cd in the psp. you payed to get a different kind of media. I still use my psp a lot, if I spent 250 for vita I spect to get new vita games, if I want to play old psp games I will grab my psp

I didnt think they would do it and im not surprised. Why even use UMDs in the first place? Its not like the Vita uses UMDs and isnt compatible, it uses cards instead. And games purchased through the store can be played on it, its just UMDs themselves cannot be used. And @slippship Who wants to play gameboy games on the 3DS? They literally gave them away. And its obvious that you havent played it so keep your ignorant comments to yourself.

@Sigil-otaku You've made my immature 38 yr old self billious. I didn't call anyone spoilt brats, if you check again and read as written you will note it as an opinion and not accusation. But thank you for pointing it out, I shall bear in mind next time I think something to not note it. I don't expect backwards compatibility, nor do I especially want it, sure I was happy to complete GOW 2 on my PS3, which is still backwards compatible, but it doesn't make it a better game or machine. If I want to play a PS2 game I would dig out my PS2, not an issue to me. I have GTA III on my xperia play and was saddened when I booted it up, rose tinted glasses don't help there. So many reasons to leave old games behind. There are treasures like ICO/Shadow but they are seldom.

This doesn't upset me as much as the loss of backwards compatibility (BC) on the PlayStation 3. With the PS3, not only did they brag about BC before launch, they put it in the original consoles, took it out to cut costs, and then started charging us for older titles in the form or digital downloads or HD release bundles. Still, this doesn't seem like the best decision, especially when we know that our Japanese counterparts are getting the treatment. Of course, I probably wouldn't pay $13-31 for a game I already own, but that doesn't mean that some gamers wouldn't like to have that option.

GertFroop
GertFroop

If Sony are so desperate to rip us off our wonga why don't they just charge us individually for each new firmware update? How many OFWs for the PSP? 50-100 maybe (lets say 70), that's £20 each update x 70 = £1,400. Lets say there are 30 million Western PSP users, with a hardcore minority still refusing to budge from the 1st OFW - 1 million = 29 million. So that's £1,400 x 29 million = £40.6 trillion. Now Sony have already released several FW updates in JPN, so when the West gets it they can activate this exclusive OFW update model! Then we don't even have to buy their games, simply the firmwares! And Sony will be Rich Beyond their Wildest Dreams (!) By the Way Comedy Lovas this was all a Palindrome of Bolton ;p

@slippship Your talking nonsensical rubbish. You think they would actually give away the software / hardware to play games via backwards compatibility for free? Sure, that's what every business does. Or more likely it would be factored into the cost of the system if incorporated so not free. As for why the older game consoles (some of the first around) didn't play multiple systems worth of games? That's simple, technology has improved since the old days of basic technology and people appreciate systems with multiple functionalities. Whether in the past people expected a feature or not is irellevant because nowadays it's pretty common place whether it's by the GBA, DS, 3DS, PS2, PS3, X360, PC's or whatever. It's not hard to see that dropping a common feature is not a good thing but while your complaining you don't like the 3DS you should respect other peoples views for disliking this about the PSVita or why should they respect yours? Calling everyone spoilt brats only comes off as you being immature too because you couldn't even word it respectfully despite it being an obvious missed oppertunity for sony since they HAVE implemented it in other regions and talked about it. Gamers like to have handhelds, they don't like to need 3 or 4 to get all there games to work. Obviously systems can't run 10 previous generations worth of games but PSVita is doing it Japan so it just seems silly to not do it elsewhere.

@Muteki_X Nothing to do with being corporate. Go play a Gameboy game on your 3DS, go on, it's so good, what do you mean you have to buy a emulated version. Sound to me like the whole world wants to flame Sony, who give us some pretty decent gear. I've been a gamer for over 30 years, the 3DS is crap, no other term for it. My daughter cried the house down for one and now even she doesn't play it, coz the games aren't any better than on he DS. I joined here with my opinions, there's a lot of thumbs up that I think are spoilt brat tosh, especially on this story. Did we moan when we couldn't play C64 on the Amiga without piracy? I still think you are all asking for something for free and that will never happen.

@Muteki_X Haha nice one mate :) 1st I pre-ordered from Amazon uk, then Amazon Fra, then cancelled them both :D, KoD is supposed to be buying Liquidzigong a Vita so here's hoping for you-know-what ;-p

Getting very dissapointed between microsoft and sony of late. We will have to see if this will cause sony to drop the price in 6 months time like nintendo had too. These companies need to realize if your going to upset your player base, people arent going to buy their product.

Same old $ony, always give you less and expect you to want more ... lol But who knows with a big corporation like this, some douches wearing ties probably decided in a last minute meeting that it wasnt worth opening a small departement just for this.

i dunno how sony been thinking lately to be honest.... its not selling as good as expected in japan considering psp was pretty much only a success in japan and they didnt translate many titles from japan if they cant do better in japan and dont even give us the "benefits" japan is getting with it - why should we buy it? please start giving out good news about vita cause so far all i hear is reasons to not buy one if u wanna make money sony - and u clearly want that - fire whoever is marketing vita and think a bit... oh and fix some rpgs and none ports and hd versions of games already made give me a reason to get a vita - not reasons to not get one!

I cancelled my pre-order, will see how it fares over the summer when I'll maybe pick it up 2nd-hand nice and cheap (cross fingers for a cfw). Waste of money

SO $ony chooses a bad medium (UMD) that never catches on and now sticks it again to consumers. Between this and the other BS they have put us consumers through with the PS3 and hacked accounts I am done with you Sony. I'll EBAY my current stuff and stick to gaming on the PC and other consoles/handhelds.

GeneralTrouble

Everyone and his dog in the game industry moan about the used game market yet they do nothing to encourage gamers to keep hold of their games. What do they think, that we'll carry around every incarnation of a game system so we can play all our games? Make your damn machines backward compatible and slash the price of UMD games and you just might find you get some extra sales instead of alienating half your customer base.

Shehryar_89
Shehryar_89

They can do it so by introducing an external UMD drive as a PSV accessory that can be placed at the back of Vita (as PSP games don't use touch pads)...in turn Sony can earn profits from the accessory! ...but they are fools

Oh boy another reason not to buy Vita at launch. I love Sony and I strongly believe in Sony>Microsoft, but things like this are riduculous $250+ for a super psp that can't play psp games WTF!!!! (Sigh) Maybe next year........ For nothing over $150!!!!

I hope Sony realizes that some people bought their PSP Vita's to replace their PSP's. They won't be happy when they find out that all their PSP games are now pointless in existence without a PSP.

wow, this has caught me off guard, well its safe to say that europe (and other territories) will not get this as well which is a shame. its becoming a trend that with each new segment of info that trickles out about the vita, the more obstacles are put in the way for people who are genuinely interested in buying one. I wasn't going to be buying a vita anytime soon but the way things are going it looks like history is going to repeat itself in the sense of what happened with the first few years of the ps3.

Not surprised, Sony's gone down hill during the PSP/PS3 era? Removing PS2 compatibility and just now offering an extremely limited selection of PS2 games on the store. The PSP Go digital distribution fiasco. The online passes punishing gamers who got their games legally. And I didn't bring up the disaster that was caused by Other OS. Other OS was kind of pointless. Not bothering with the developing the feature would have saved time, money, and trouble. It's almost like they're just begging for trouble.

KaiserKasey

It's like...they don't want more money for games we already gave them money for. Or better yet (for them, not us) more money from titles they never received secondary revenue from (i.e. used titles). They'd probably make a killing allowing this program to operate rather than the alternative of people just discontinuing their purchase of psp products altogether. I love my PSP...but I'm sure as hell not going to re-buy games at an inflated price just to play them on the vita. C'mon Sony.

I postulate Sony is taking this Anti-Western stance with its Mighty Price-Point as a Pre-Cursor for Strategic Re-Alignment of its Key Finance Divisions to Effect Economic Ruin upon all Foreign Pre-Order Customers, thereby becoming the Sole Remaining World SuperPower! ... ;p

This is ( IMO) a huge blunder on SONYs part. Even though the PSP didnt sell that much compared to the DS . It did sell a cool 66 Million units and you can bet that those people who did the buy the PSP have atleast have some games on UMD lying around. This is gonna piss off a lot of people who was hoping to buy the Vita and transfer their old games to it. Nintendo did a smart decision regarding the 3DS, they allowed Backwards Compatibility for old DS games and in a way did not alienate some of their customers. When designing the VITA Sony atleast should have anticipated this problem.

only a sony fanboy would buy these anywhere near the launch.. u cant play your old psp games at all like poeple in other places can like sonys home land japan, you cant play any ps vita game without a over priced sony made memory sd card. the camera aint even as good as the much cheaper 3ds. i just dont see how this will sell at 250 to 300 bucks here in the states.even in japan where they love handhelds. ps vita hasnt sold well. i would feel sorry for sony but they need to learn a lesson.. one they didnt learn from releasing the psp go or launching a system for 600 bucks... maybe 1 day they will wake up.. just hope its not tooo late would hate to just have 2 game makers again

"Q: PS Vita doesn't support UMD but do you have any plan to introduce peripherals like "UMD readers" for PS Vita? A: We do not have plans to introduce such peripherals at this point in time. Q: I have UMD games but do I need to buy them again from PlayStation Store to play the same game on PS Vita? A: We will consider every possibility for support on bought UMD games but we have nothing to comment at this point in time. Q: Will you bring all UMD games to the new game medium or on the PlayStation Store for PS Vita? A: SCE with the support of third party developers and publishers have been offering select UMD titles on PlayStation Store and will continue our effort to deliver these content in the form of game medium for PS Vita going forward. However, we will need to clear all copyright / legal related issues and due to this not all software titles will become available on PS Vita. We will announce details for each title when ready." source PS; UMDs do not have specific IDs identifying each copy. If you have two copies of Daxter, the PSP doesn't read the first copy as "Daxter 455" and the second as "Daxter 642." It reads both as "Daxter." This is why the UMD Passport program was offering you the OPTION to redownload your games at a to be trying.
