Sega of America has announced that Phantasy Star Online Version 2 will incorporate an online payment structure. Users will have to pay an incremental charge to play the game online. However, the specific payment details were not announced at this time. The original Phantasy Star Online will still be playable free of charge over the SegaNet servers.

"As with all US versions of Sega Dreamcast network playable games, the original Phantasy Star Online includes unlimited online gameplay at no additional cost," the company said in an official statement. "Due to the high demand for Phantasy Star Online Version 2 among US gamers, Sega of America announced on May 17 that it would bring the game to the US market. Phantasy Star Online Version 2 will incorporate an online payment structure...Sega is committed to making the game easily accessible and affordable for US gamers. While Phantasy Star Online Version 2 can be enjoyed offline, gamers can now access new features, modes, and quests through the game, available this summer for the Sega Dreamcast."
