PSN restoration delayed

Sony says "internal testing" of PlayStation Network taking longer than expected due to "comprehensive system checks" and security verification.

by

Sony has dashed the hopes of PlayStation 3 owners who had hoped to play online over the weekend. In a post on the official PlayStation Blog, Sony Computer Entertainment America's senior director of corporate communications and social media Patrick Seybold announced that restoring PlayStation Network service is taking longer than expected.

Don't expect the PSN to be up this weekend.

"As you may know, we've begun the process of restoring the service through internal testing of the new system," he said. "We're still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system. Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration. Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online."

Seybold continued, "As you've heard us say, our utmost priorities are the security of the network and ensuring your data is safe. We won't restore the services until we can test the system's strength in these respects…When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week. We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system…We apologize for the delay and inconvenience of this network outage."

Seybold's comments came the day after Sony announced it was performing "final testing" before the system went back online. That same day, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer offered an apology for the prolonged delay, and the company unveiled a free identity-theft protection program with $1 million worth of insurance for each customer.

Unfortunately, today's announcement comes over two weeks after the PSN first went offline on the evening of April 20. The following Tuesday, the company confirmed there had been a data breach, but said some PSN services would be up within a week. Then on April 30, the company announced it would give PSN users free content to make up for the outage and promised the network would be back online within the following week. Finally, this past Wednesday, the company submitted a detailed timeline of the attack to the US Congress--the day before a cyber-security expert claimed Sony knew the PSN's security software was outdated.

It takes a long time to do system checks and diagnose things (and shred/burn documents and secure plane tickets to countries that don't allow extradition)

Hurry the **** up SONY so I can play SOCOM 4 already, I spent $60 on a game that is mainly online (partially because the single player kinda sucks) Funny how, yet again, everyone keeps defending SONY. Why? You think they aren't money hungry like M$ too? Really? I've gone through 3 PS3s, my first was the original w/ mem card slots - BL diode died within a year and SONY wanted $130 to fix it.... these companies just want your money, WE WANT TO PLAY THE GAMES WE PAID FOR. I have resorted to playing PC and 360 these past weeks instead of SOCOM. Hurry the **** up SONY, you have disappointed me over and over again, just the same as M$ has.....

If they are getting good security then it may cost but there won't be as many modders like before then again they my keep it free more ppl like ps3 because it's free but either way ps3 will still be a good system. But i prefer xbox just cuz got to much money in it and friends.

@jhcho2 I have the same problem. Waiting to sync my old ps3 that has the ylod which I fix with hairdryer. It works but got a new one to transfer data but need to be logged in PSN in order to do so. I could use my old one but I don't wanna take a chance and have it take a dump again before data transfer.

we all deserve something more than a month of play station plus..maybe umm enough money to buy something on psn store? $30? maybe 50?

Sony shouldn't just give us 1 month of Plus privilege. They should give us a $100 PSN shopping voucher.

I really don't mind the outage. I have a PS3 myself I just hope they get it done soon. Before the SSFIV Arcade edition upgrade is available.

@jhcho2 I feel your pain. I had to restore factowy settings during the outage and all my ID info was wiped, leaving me out of the loops. But hey, I have more than enought games on PC, PS2 and hell, even PSP that I should finish. People (kids mainly) got spoiled by stupid online only games like CoD. They don't even know how many great titles they are missing.

My old ps3 was F-ed. Just bought a new one. Now i'm floating around without identity because I can't sync my user ID to my PSN account. Another reason why the PC's open platform is better. Gaming on pc doesn't force you to have IDs registered to an online account, which are in turn linked to save files. Now I'm locked out from all my save files.

Disappointed with the delay but if they make sure everything is working properly, I would rather wait a little longer and have a smooth PSN relaunch than Sony bringing it back early only having to take it back down.

Sony is better to give the HUGE news tomorrow, announcing that they are bringing back the PSN Store as well, because otherwise 3+ weeks to fix the vulnerabilities of a network simple would make no sense!

They have clearly stated long ago, that FULL PSN functionality won't be available before end of may. Only basic functionality like online gaming, triphies and friends should be back sooner. Learn to read, ahats.

When it became known Sony had to rebuild their entire network I said it would take weeks or months to get it back online and bug free. You should have seen the thumbs down I got for that. Looks like I was right.

This is just getting crazy lol, now there are saying it won't be up till May 31! How de we know it will even be up then if there last two predictions were way off?

Raymus79

@firebladex good point, well made. What do you think about small publishers whose income relies solely on PSN network? If PSN can be proved to be negligent - which is a real possibility - surely this will open the floodgates for bug and small publishers alike to claim lose of income?

So many of you are spouting this 'Sony betrayed us stuff', it's not personal. Multi million dollar companies cut corners, for them it's always all about the profit margin. I'm as pissed off at Sony for the weak security as everyone else but you'll find all big companies try and get an edge in the market like this. It's a fact of industry, unfortunately Sony are the ones who've been exposed on such a big scale and as a result it's us who are suffering. If XBL had been attacked like this chances are things would've gone down much the same. It's annoying as hell and Sony (and all the other companies) should know better, but if you think switching to xbox will mean switching to a company that cares more about you, you're probably wrong. You just won't find out about it in such a dramatic way.

@Raymus79 At the end of the day the Ps3 may represent around 50% give or take of a multi platform game's sales. For a publisher to sue Sony is to try and use that figure to replace sales, which whilst some would argue is justified, in the long run is not a financially sound idea. You need to remember court costs etc. I SERIOUSLY hope you never work in publishing.

Raymus79

Sony will now be sued by a LOT of publishers.

Looks like we might not see some online action til the end of the month... May 31st to be exact, oh well... Good thing I ain't much of a game crackhead like I used to be... I got more important things going for me now so I can wait a month or so... But I understand how it feels to live off gaming, especially online... Good luck but good things come to those that wait.. If the world ended tomorrow can you say you really lived your life? Gtfo the house and take a chance... Play life for real

I was thinking if psn not back up this wk do you think sony should give us £50 pounds to spend what we want on psn stuff or £20 pounds. Sony if your listening give us more free stuff or one new free ps3 game of our choice if you takeing so long. Or give us extra things for this dealy.

So many people complaining about how 'it shouldn't take this long', so few who actually know the first thing about the work involved in repairing and upgrading servers capable of sustaining 77 million users around the world. As soon as Sony open the PSN to the public it's going to get attacked again both by malicious hackers and by other's who just want to see the changes they've made. So how about everyone just chills out and let them make sure it's ready?

@LeoLex_ You a pro security expert who knows all about these things then? Judging by your spelling and grammar I'd guess not. I would hardly describe insuring something like this doesn't happen again as f***ing around. Also, while they may have withheld some information longer than some people would have liked they haven't actually been lying. And 2 months? Almost certainly bulls***. Sony don't care that you sold your PS3- most people haven't.

LeoLex_

Looks like my decision to sell my PS3 and buy an Xbox is paying off. Sony this aint the 90's WTF you think your playin at with all your 'CHECKS' just doesn't take this long in 2011 ur a joke an i and most of my m8s have left you for Xbox already you cant be f***ing around when you got games like Brink and the Duke on the way and you already had the new Black maps sail by. this and all your lies has ruined you, and when are you going to tell the remaining few that this is going to take months because really you dont have a clue HAHA the truth will out! another two months with these donkeys. Thank god for X
