PSN picks up discount movie rentals

Beginning today, Sony's online platform offering select movie rentals in standard def for $.99, high-def for $1.99.

Between cutting the price of the PlayStation 3 to $250 and introducing a €99 PSP in Europe, Sony evidently had money on its mind during its 2011 Gamescom press conference. One announcement that didn't make it into that media briefing was the introduction of a discount movie rental program for the PlayStation Network.

Want to watch JFK: Reckless Youth (Part 1) on your PS3 for $1? Now you can do so, in standard definition at least.

Beginning today, PSN users in the US and Canada can download and watch a range of movies in standard definition for $.99 or high definition for $1.99. Sony has been offering movies for rent since 2008, when it introduced the service as part of its 2008 Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefing.

Movies that are party to the $.99 rental program will rotate from week to week, with new offerings appearing as part of Sony's regularly scheduled Tuesday update to the PSN. A full list of this week's movie-rental deals for the US PSN store can be found below.

Check out Sony's website for its full list of terms and conditions.

If Sony are looking for people to make more use of their rental service then they need to start making more movies available, not reduce the price of the ones no one wants to watch.

This is killer! A few people were complaining the rentals were too expensive and they were i guess i'd prefer not to have subscriptions or streaming so i paid a few overpriced rentals but now it's just a million times better!
