PS4's New Update Adds Auto "Featured Content" Downloads

The new 1.75 update also adds 3D Blu-ray support and moves the location of system notifications.

Following last week's stability-only PlayStation 4 system update, another update--version 1.75--has arrived today. As promised, it introduces support for 3D Blu-ray movies, but it also has several other new features and changes.

The most significant of these is the new Featured Content option in the Automatic Downloads and Uploads area of the system's settings. With this option turned on, "featured content" will be downloaded to your system automatically when your PS4 is on or in standby mode. It's unclear just what kind of content will be included in this category or if there is any limit on how much will be automatically downloaded on a weekly basis.

One of the other two features will affect most every PS4 user, albeit in a minor way: System notifications that used to show up in the upper-right corner of the screen will now be displayed in the top left.

And finally, for those who like to watch their DVDs or Blu-rays more quickly than normal--a habit I, myself, have never understood--you'll now find the audio quality when watching DVDs and Blu-rays at 1.5x speed has been "improved."

Separate from this update, Sony has also announced the details of an update coming today for ShareFactory, PS4's video editor app. Once installed, screenshots can be imported into projects, new filters and stickers have been added, the UI has been improved, and a Last of Us theme (consisting of stickers, transitions, and more) is now available for use.

Are you happy to finally see a PS4 update with some new features in it? Let us know what you'd like to see in the next update in the comments below.

3D-Blu-Ray support?

Now my ears pricked up.

But they nailed them down when they said the PS4 will not play PS3 games. I had around 150+ (and two PS3`s) so would not buy the PS4

Why does this site delete your comment when sending you to log-in after you write the comment?

What timewaster thought that up? What idjut thought that after logging in and losing the place where we were responding to a story then thinks that it would be fun to delete our comment and then send us to a different page after logging in?

OR are the coders really so thick that they do not know that it is that kind of internet which makes most people shut the site off?

How about an update that lets me create folders for games.  Holy crap its a mess right now browsing my library.

So basically a bunch of updates that don't do anything for me or the average PS4 user.  Great.  How about cleaning up the UI for the main menu Sony.  My screen is starting to look a bit cluttered with each new game I get.

Pelican170
Pelican170

Now can they make support for the main menu? How about being able to group games together. How about being able to change the background? C'mon Sony, these were all things the PS3 has done for a while...

What I really want is the support for MPEG and AVI and all sort of videos formats that were compatible with the PS3 and X360... I'm tired of using the X360 to watch the stuff I download or even my camera videos...

They're taking too long to add functions we had working on the last gen and that were useful...

Where is the MP3 players? c'mom sonyland... hear us out, please!

I can't wait to watch DVDs on my console! I'm tired of using my DVD player and PC!

Auto-Downloading of Featured content.... that seems like a nice idea in an ideal world where things take a minute or two to download but considering Sony has limited capacity, and probably the majority of users have slow connections it seems like a massive drain on Sony's resources, and a huge annoyance for people on slow connections for a feature that would seldom be appreciated.

and Yay, 3D Bluray... finally we're back where we were in 2010.

I hate that all notifications are on the left now. Thats where every game puts it's mini-map. I can't see it half the dam time with a notification blocking it every 10 seconds :(

One thing i want is Stop/Pause recording. For example 15 min is not enough to record a game of FIFA so at the end i record each goal from the menu, so its useless to record for 15 minutes if i only need one minute. i know i can edit it but it will be a problem once the HDD is almost full of games.

Wait I thought that was one of the things Sony was attacking MS about? That they had BD 3D at launch. I guess they weren't that different in that regard. Now we just wait for X1 to get the update. That being said, This update mostly doesn't apply to me. Still, I won't complain about additions and improvements. Keep 'em coming Sony!

I couldn't believe that BOTH the XB1 & PS4 shipped without 3d BluRay support. That was a major oversight. It's a feature not regularly used, but sometimes you get in the mood to watch a 3d movie.

And if I were you guys, I would turn that new "auto download of Featured Content" addition off. Unless you want your hard drive instantly getting filled up with all the garbage from PSN's front page. I think Sony is gonna use that "Featured" area like ads without calling them ads. They'll charge companies more to be in that section.

For all those features that are constantly being added?

Ok, don't know where to post this so I'll say it to an article that has people who may be hating on Sony.

Just played a bunch of the last of us for the first time.  To all of you who say "this isn't a game," I agree.  But that's no criticism.  I don't know what it is.  What I do know is this: I've been gaming for upwards of 32 years.  I've been saying games are art for my entire adult life.  I have no idea what I just experienced, but to say I just played a game trivializes it.

And the dad in me just had to wake up my kids to hug them.  Seriously.  Any parent reading this, go play it.  Now.

For real.  Put down the fanboy crap.  If you're the biggest X1 fan, if you're the biggest PC master racer, borrow a PS.

Sorry.  Had to say that to people who understand games.  Carry on as you were.

Can either Sony or Facebook fix the problem with PS4 trophies syncing? PS4 trophies don't appear on Facebook unless you manually go into your activity feed and allow every individual one. Doesn't work like that for Vita and PS3 games.

I'm glad I don't have a ps4 cause the featured content corporations like to serve up has a very bad tendency to suck and Sony produces the worst of this crap.

Ippe

But why on earth they still haven't added the categorizing options for the trophy list? PS Vita has this working nicely, so it's a shame that this is not yet possible with PS4. I mean the possibility to have your trophy list in alphabetical order if you prefer to. Or you can change the categorizing to the order of the last played games. etc. Just doesn't fit my understanding, why this possibility is still not there.

@SHusien I don't even bother with the library since you can't really delete from the library even if you've deleted the game from the system itself.

It's ridiculous.

@rexpowercolt And will SONY later `Undo` that feature after selling sheldloads of the PS4? They know most people do not read all the smallprint.

@saintaeturnus  You could watch DVD's and Blurays on your console from the get go. This is for 3d blurays...

@Blank2k2 funny thing,ps4 has supported 3d  for ages.i found this out when i downloaded a pinball games that was 3d and it detected my 3d tv,i also been playing trine2 in 3d for a month or so.the console played 3d,but not the disk player, that was wierd.but they never mentioned that the console supported 3d.

It's actually a good way fot Sony to control their bandwidth by sending out featured downloads in controlled waves of predetermined size based on time zones and such. It's good for all the reasons you think it's bad.

endorbr

@olddadgamer Yep. And as a dad I get you.  Especially after that first 10-15 minutes of gameplay.  I knew the game was going to be good when they had me tearing up in the prologue.

hystavito

@olddadgamer This is just a generalized gripe that has nothing specific to do with The Last of Us, I haven't played it yet, I have the remaster coming in the mail though.

The problem I keep coming back to is that even in communities of gamers (like the staff here and the users) there's always the notion that games are not as good as other art forms, or that they are not art at all.  Maybe people don't even realize it, but it's there in the words they use, there are always implications like that even when trying to defend games.  There's always talk of games being "more", which implies they are less, or as you say to call it a playing a game is to "trivialize" it.  It's even more odd when people specifically talk about games being given the same or more respect than movies, because then the games they call out as being the best examples are just the most movie-like games.

Kinguard73

@olddadgamer  it's as much of a game as much as a movie is a movie. Emotional responces doesn't change it. Just enhances it.

It's a shame you suffered through this 'game' instead of play...err, watch it on YouTube.

Will you make it to the end though when it's all on YouTube where you can skip all the mediocrity?

@gothmog56 @Blank2k2 It supported games but only in 720p 3d. Im wondering if these games will be up to 1080p now? It wouldnt play 3d blurays until this update...

olddadgamer
olddadgamer

@hystavito @olddadgamer Yeah, trivialize wasn't the best word.

See, though, I don't think that was like a movie.  I played the prologue, and I could explain but I'd have to put in spoilers.  It does things that no movie could do, so it's not great because it's "cinematic."  It's.... something else altogether.  I don't quite know what.  But I do know that getting hung up on gameplay is missing the point that this is something.... else.  Something new.  And something very powerful.  And something that wouldn't at ALL be the same if you watched it on youtube.  Because there is an experiential aspect to how the story is told that isn't there in a movie (or book, or TV, or anything).  You have to "play" it (Interact with it? go into it? I don't know the words to use) to get it.

I think we may be getting to that point where there are games, that you play, and you enjoy.  We'll always have great, GREAT games that are, in fact, games.  And I'm happy for that.  But we're also getting these..... experiences? That aren't traditional games, but aren't.... anything else that has ever been done.  And THAT'S great, too.

@hystavito @olddadgamer Video games are art though. It feel like when TLOU came out it made it an art form even more so. I think about Pong being cave paintings lol. I've been playing through the remastered version and it's just stunning in every way possible. I feel like people that hate this game haven't played it and have no idea when their talking about.

I bought an X1 at launch and was gifted a ps3 in june along with the last of us. It was one of the best gaming experiences i've ever had. I bought a ps4 a month later.

RevLux

@Sevenizz  The story is w/o a doubt the best part of TLoU for many gamers. Though the third person action is also extremely well done. It was made by the same developer that brought the world Uncharted after all. The upgrade to 1080p, and especially, 60fps makes the game even better on the PS4. Even the multiplayer is exceptional and very unique. Which is quite rare for a 3rd person action game.

If that is what you consider "suffering" then you must have led an extremely sheltered existence.

@Sevenizz I get that you are the biggest X1 tr  oll on here, but seriously.  I you watch this on youtube, it won't be the same.  It just won't.

Do yourself a favor and play it.  Everyone who gives half an ass about games should.  I promise I won't tell and hurt your fanboy cred.

Sevenizz
Sevenizz

Here's the thing. I own it for my PS3. I was completely underwhelmed by the 'gameplay'. The story is fine and all. But when the game feels like a chore to get to the next cutscene - something's wrong. One of my all time favorite games is the original Splinter Cell. When I played LoU and got to an early zombie section. Something clicked in my head that I've played this game before - except a much better version of it. I actually felt cheated by the AI which was rather poor compared to SC but the excuse was that they're 'zombies', so it's ok.

Sorry, I did not enjoy the 'gameplay' in the LoU. The story is passable, but I play games for gameplay. There are better mediums for storytelling.
