PS4 voice and gesture control confirmed

Next-generation console's camera will support both voice and gesture control, Sony confirms at Tokyo Game Show this week.

The PlayStation 4 will support voice and gesture control through its camera, Sony confirmed with Engadget this week at the 2013 Tokyo Game Show.

The confirmation comes after an Amazon listing for the PlayStation camera stated that it would allow features including "navigational voice commands."

Competitor Microsoft will also offer voice and gesture control for the Xbox One via the Kinect.

While the Kinect is bundled with every Xbox One, PlayStation 4 users will need to pay $60 to purchase a PlayStation camera.

Sony also confirmed this week at TGS that the PS4 would allow recording of game content over HDMI.

The PS4 launches November 15 in North America, November 29 in Europe, and in 32 countries by the end of the year.

I'm still baffled that Kinect copied Eyetoy and gets stupid praises, but PS Move gets ridiculed for "copying" Wii, in which the PS Move is really the best of all three.

if owning sony products has taught me anything, it's that this peripheral will take forever to receive little, if any, support.

At last, something to kompete with the kinect! :D

I don't understand why people bitch about Kinect not being optional it seems like Xbox one was built with Kinect at the heart of the system from the get go.

When ps3 came with that expensive Blu-Ray (not optional) pushing a 20g model to $500 where was all the bitching,  but it can play blu ray movies, but I just want to play games.

Machinimatt

At least sony has made their camera optional, which is what M$ should be doing. I don't want or care about playing games with voice and gestures

um this will not be half as good as the kinect 2.0 but it's a start. Who here have a sony t.v or phone?

Damn so we are going to be able to play games without using an controller!

So does that mean it can turn on the PS4?

I've have honestly seen this coming.......:) They won't just make a simple ps eye that performs the same as the old one.

That's nice, but not something I'm interested in.

50% more powerful and $100.00 cheaper is all that matters to me. Leave all the gimmicks and TV programs to the xbone..

I expect this to be as useful as the sixaxis and pressure sensitive buttons.

Speaking as a Sony fan, I will say the same thing as I said of the Xbox: Just make a damn good system that can run games well. Who gives a crap about these gimmicks? It's much faster to control the system using the controllers anyway.

Just another stupid marketing gimmick.  Like Siri and Air Gesture in phones.  Who needs them?

At least Sony gives consumers the choice whether to adopt the tech (and buy the cam).  MS just shoves it down our throats.  MS trying to copy Apple in dictating consumer preference.  Sheer corporate arrogance!  No wonder Apple deserves to get whipped by Android phones.

When is Sony ever going to show us any of its shit?  Sorry Sony after your $600 PS3 shit in not buying a PS4 until I see some results for it.  It's almost October and we have not seen if Sony fixed any of their past mistakes, and now they are touting motion controls?  WTF!!!  How about you show me it don't take 15 hours to update games.  How about you show us you interface is better?  Show us something Sony, your shit talking about the xbox1 only wins over kiddies, real buyers remember the PS3 and that garbage.

I wonder what developers will decide: "should we program a game that inherently uses Kinect as a core aspect if half of our sales are for X-bone users? Or should we just add a small, gimmicky and useless use for the damn thing and be done with it."

XBOX with Kinect 499

PS4 399 + Eye 60 = 459 it is still cheaper :), Plus it is not required to buy the eye

just because they say they have it does not mean it works very well.  They need to show this tech that they are hiding

@coatesyman that argument isn't even close to being relevant. The Kinect being mandatory is the equivalent to having to buy R.O.B. for the NES. The mandatory bluray was a format change like going from cartridges to discs, hence why its going to be the standard in the new consoles. Bluray is what kept PS3 games down to one disc instead of Final Fantasy 13's 3 discs. Bluray is Highly relevant to a gamers experience and thusly a very necessary component for a true next gen experience

@banana23man I say the same thing as a soon to be ex-Xbox fan, and I add that it's much faster to control your TV with the remote too

@JurchenKingThe initial plan was to have it bundled (or shoved down our throats) but they made it optional after XB1 price announcement. It was a clever business maneuver while everyone was watching and not really because they're a godly caring company.

@wickedsc300 Yeah, I'm still waiting for Sony to show us their multitasking. So far what they showed could easily be suspended tasks and not actual multitasking, but I would like clarification. Microsoft on the other hand did show their multitasking and it is legit.

@Raymond11 Only in US... Please remember other parts of the world have different pricing.

force_user1975
force_user1975

@Raymond11 The real problem is that without a PS Eye in every box, developers have absolutely no reason to take advantage of it. Sort of like what happened with the Move and to an extent Kinect. Every Xbox One has a Kinect with it, so developers can program options at least that every single Xbox One owner can use if they so choose.

The main thing I wanted this gen was some innovation, and Kinect brings that. I mean you can program new animations with Project Spark with Kinect 2. I realize the first Kinect wasn't a huge hit with the forum going crowd, but I liked it a lot, especially when they used it to add to an experience like Skyrim, Forza, Mass Effect or Halo Anniversary.

Sony is basically sending their camera out to die, which is a shame because they focused on it so much at the PS4's reveal, and removed it simply to beat a price point. If they were so confident in their hardware, software and features they should have just went head to head and offered their camera with every one. Now the PS4 is the only next gen console without a camera.

@NoblesseOblige_ Hmm. So, SOCOM (2007) voice command via the headset was a gimmick also?? (I'm assuming you're old as I am to rememeber)

@bmart970 Your opinion is worthless until you try first. I have and I agree on the first (motion controls) and disagree on the second (voice controls) when it comes to dashboard navigation and media control. As for gaming? Seems like a hit or a miss.

force_user1975
force_user1975

@bmart970 Did you ever play Skyrim or Mass Effect with Kinect? I think it streamlined those games greatly. Also I think as we see more MMO's on consoles voice controls will be the new hotkeys.

@bmart970  Yeah. Maybe...until we get lazy to use our fingers :)

@Ensabuhnur Gesture control I might worry about, but voice recognition is pretty common stuff now so I have no doubt that it would be decent.  You have voice recognition engines like Dragon built-in to mobile apps that cost a few dollars, so I don't think it's a big deal nowadays.

blue_shift_91

@Lazerproof @coatesyman

that's a load of shit. bluray was completely useless for the first few years of the ps3 lifespan, and to this day, the ps3 has still not utilized it to its full potential. the first wave of gamers essentially paid  an extra $125 to fund sony's format war for its ENTERTAINMENT divisions, not just gaming. the "gamer experience" associated with spending 30 seconds to swap out a disk is about as valid (or even less so) as the "gamer experience" associated with kinect functionality or azure.

anigmha
anigmha

@northArrow @banana23man Xbox, play Halo. Xbox, pause. Xbox, watch ESPN.

I think it is faster to use voice controls for certain things. Is it 100 dollars faster? I dunno, we'll have to wait and see.

@force_user1975  thank God! that are still people using their brains in the comments section. Well said. :D

@force_user1975 Most games are multiplatform and the fact that Sony doesn't have a mandatory camera means that most developers won't develop for either the Eye or Kinect. Why waste the time and resources to do so if you can't charge extra for it anyway?

I can't say I'm heartbroken over this though, I was hugely disappointed by the original Kinect, and I didn't care for the features it added to Mass Effect or Skyrim, especially since it didn't always work anyway. I've seen no evidence to suggest the new Kinect will be any different than the original with a better camera.

I'm thankful Sony at least gave me the option to choose whether or not to get the device after a worth wile feature/game comes out for it

northArrow

@force_user1975Both Mass Effect 3 and Skyrim were superior gaming experiences when the Kinect was disabled. Especially considering how unreliable the commands were.

blue_shift_91

@mistgun1233 @blue_shift_91

it matters because the kinect 2.0 hasn't even been released yet. it hasn't seen widespread use, and people are already deeming it a failure, while acting as if something like the bluray format was destined to push the game industry forward - while acting like bluray was somehow an ok mandatory feature to pay for, despite it being useless for the initial years. nobody knows how to take a lesson from history.

in case you didn't realize, investments in high fidelity sensors are booming, and devices are always increasingly utilizing alternative methods of command input. who here is to say that MS doesn't also have to think in the long run? it's ridiculous to think otherwise.

and no, if you thought that uncharted 3, TLOU, MGS, Heavy Rain, and blah blah were the best games that could be pushed out on bluray, you are sorely mistaken. you can say they avoided being "held back" 3+ years after the ps4 release because we all have the benefit of hindsight now. not because we all have magic prediction powers that show us how much or how little the kinect or azure will push the entertainment industry.

blue_shift_91
blue_shift_91

@Darrius_Cole @blue_shift_91

except that there's absolutely no reason why kinect functionality should be limited to in-game command crap. there are an unforeseeable number of applications outside of that, and there's a shit ton more tech in the kinect than just a camera and mic. engineers and students have found (and are still finding) quite a few uses for the thing.

mistgun1233
mistgun1233

@blue_shift_91 Why does it matter that it was useless in the first few years of the ps3 lifespan in terms of games? Sony would have had to think in the long run since they expected a 10 year console cycle and it's not like they could use a DVD drive initially then switch to a blu-ray drive later on. Also, how can you say it's not been utilised when massive games such as Uncharted 3, TLOU, etc. would have been held back and FF13 is proof enough of why going with blu-ray was a good move.

Darrius_Cole
Darrius_Cole

@blue_shift_91

The same that happened to blu-ray in the PS3 is going to happen to Kinect in the Xbone; it's going to be held back by its competitor.

Because the 360 had a DVD, not multi-plat games were made of sufficient size that they would require blu-ray.  Likewise, no multi-plat game will be made such that Kinect is a significant part of it.
