PS4 titles will be 99 cents to $60

SCEA CEO Jack Tretton reveals next-gen titles will not jump an additional $10; describes smartphone games as "additive experiences" and not true threat to core gaming.

Gamers worried that PlayStation 4 games will see a price hike like last generation can relax. SCEA CEO Jack Tretton told CNBC that that the plan is for PlayStation 4 titles to max out at $60, the same cost ceiling as existing PlayStation 3 games.

"I think people are willing to pay if they see value there and I think there's more choice than ever before for consumers. We're going to welcome free-to-play models; games from 99 cents up to those $60 games," Tretton said. "But if you really see where the heat is for the true gamer on the console it's still that big-form experience that typically runs upwards of $50 million to develop and will justify that $60 price point and will give people hours and hours of gameplay on a daily basis for months and years to come."

Tretton also fielded a question about whether or not the rise of smartphone and tablet games will cut into the PS4 market. The executive described these titles are "additive experiences," noting that in the end, big-budget, blockbuster games are here to stay.

"I think those are additive experiences," Tretton said. "They demystify gaming; they bring people in with a bite-sized gaming experience. But ultimately, I think people migrate up the food chain. Conversely, if you're somebody who considers themself a true gamer and wants to play the most powerful devices and the most deep and rich gaming experiences, you're not going to find yourself migrating down the food chain other than to maybe kill some time or to complement that core gaming experience."

The PS4 is due out this holiday season. A recent report suggested the system will be available in two models at launch, the first of which may begin at $430. Inside Network analyst Billy Pidgeon believes $299 is a "magic" price point for the system.

I know a lot of you are going to be like wtf is she on about, and I'm not posting this here to start an argument. I own a video game shop in Australia  and the average price of a new release here is $80-100.My main concern is whether the next gen consoles are going to be pre-owned compatible. I just want to point out to everyone that if a company or my store buys a new release title from the supplier and the RRP is $80, we pay $72 + shipping for the game, so in reality from new games we don't make any money, that's why they're constantly so expensive. Even if their base sell price is $60 maximum it's still going to cost me $50-55 to have it in the shop. I highly urge Sony and eventually Microsoft to allow people to use pre-owned in their consoles otherwise we're all going to see a lot of independent video game shops closig down but I also think bigger companies like Gamestop (eb games in Australia) and Game closing down a lot of shops. Am I the only one that's super concerned about this?

The idea that 60 dollars is justified due to development costs being 50-60 million dollars is hilarious. Movies like the Avengers have budgets of over 200 millioin dollars and then get put out to be watched ONLY ONCE for 10 dollars.

Price is justified by adjusting costs to demand to earn a profit. Games like the CoD series and TES on steam justify not dropping their price for nearly a year because the demand hardly shrivels while many Square Enix (publisher) games lower their price a lot sooner to compensate for not being as high profile. The model and freedom that publishers and developers are given on digital distribution programs like Steam or the Android store is where the industry should be heading.

"Full game" = $60

Online pass = $10

Day One DLC = $10

DLC season pass = $20

Yeah, only $60 for a complete game.

I'm glad there wasn't another $10 increase even though I don't buy games at full price anyway. Still good nonetheless.

No shocker here... With all the DLC abuse it would be suicide to increase the base price. On top of DLC it wouldn't surprise me if publishers started locking out single player for used games. There's an extra $10 right there

I will stick to preordering PC games for $30-$45. Very rarely will I pay $60 for a new title, I don't even remember the last one I paid that much for aside from Ni No Kuni that I got as a gift it was probably Skyrim and Dark Souls.

What cost $50 in 2003 would cost $62.10 in 2013.

I remember N64 being $70 in 1997.   That's $99.44 in 2013 dollars.

$60 + Online passes, day one DLC, and all the micro transactions publishers want to add.

Surprisingly, I 100% agree with him on his smartphone thoughts. I never thought they would be an issue on hurting console gaming.

$.99?  Yeah right.  Sony charged $1.99 for Angry Birds.

wow @harold317  the ps3 had its time , it was a flop compared to ps2 so why should sony continue supporting a money hungry console lol

It's too early for PS4 to show up, they are definitely feeling Nintendo's pressure. What happened to the same Sony who didn't gave a damn about Dreamcast and went on with PS1 until they were truly ready to release the PS2? I feel like PS3 has barely hit its stride and they are finally starting to use the console to its full potential. I don't care that Sony claims their consoles to have a 10-year lifespan, after they release the successor the old platform becomes home to nothing but shitty ports and sports games. FU Sony, PS4 will bomb!

@ascrobleThat's the point of it Ascroble, because they want independent game shops like yours closing down. The act out of stopping all pre-owned games to be bought is an act out of greed which people tend to see past. The majority of gamers listen to what they're told through the gamer media and websites like these. I am very sorry to hear that you're an owner your self, but it's the sad truth. . Maybe if you, and many others make their voice heard loud enough, and by enough people that we can change this. Keep pressing my friend, maybe start up a trend on Twitter if you can! Love.

The reason games cost more than your typical blu-ray movie or a theater ticket is because console manufactures actually charge for developers to put their games out on their system. That's why 1st party manufactures sell the system at a loss, because they recoup the cost of the console through licensing fees to game developers and publishers. That is on top of the $50-60 mil. development costs. That's why you see indie developers struggle and why they are moving towards system like the Ouya, where there are no development or licencing fees for putting games out on it.

@Thanatos2k well if you buy the game, it comes with a code for the online pass.  If you buy it used, u have to pay extra for the online pass. DLC season pass should also cover day one DLC, so u just tacked on an additional 20 dollars to emphasize how expensive the games are going to be.

@Toysoldier34I didn't know that some people were worried about a price hike when it comes to PS4's games prices, being a PC-only gamer. For me it's quite the opposite, I spend far less money these days per game and have never paid full price for a game since I installed Steam 7 years ago. I also have a backlog that makes me play games that were made 7 years ago or more, which also plays a part in not paying full price.

@Accuracy158 Online Passes comes with every new game, day one DLC is if you pre-order, most of it is something completely uncanny and micro transactions has only really been seen working to an intrusive way in mmos (aka pay-to-win games).

@VirtualTofu Not Sony, Rovio/Activision. There are .99 games on Playstation Mobile (even less than that, though it's just one or two) and on Minis.

@harold317 Were you born yesterday? This generation has gone on longer than most. Developers are struggling to make PS3 games run at 720p30 while laptops can run the same games at 1080p60

Devil_wings00
Devil_wings00

@harold317 You do realize this is the longest active console generation in history...the PS3 came out in 2006, not last year. The ps4 will be out at the end of this year making the ps3 officially 7 years old. Just because you bought it 1/2 years ago doesn't mean it isn't time to move on. Also the 10 year lifespan just means the PS3 will get games for 3 more years (the PS2 JUST got discontinued in 2012 so that was 12 year life span). The PS2 was replaced in 6 years and the PS2 was massively more successful.

Urizen5
Urizen5

@harold317 I don't think Sony plans everyone to jump ship right away, or Msoft for that matter. I think a yr or two into the PS3 lifecycle before PS3 is dead. Look at how long PS2 was still supported.

pedroabperneta

@harold317 I beg to differ , i'm no PC gaming master race gamer but games have hit the wall on what's possible on that hardware. I prefer playing on my playstation but i gotta say that i've been shifting to my pc for the last year to get the better experience and i'm excited with the new ps4. What put pressure to sony wasn't nintendo at all but the ppl that been asking for a new console, always stating that this generation went too long, and tbh i agree.

@harold317

Well spoken. I just hope they have quality games come out with the launch. I bought a Vita shortly after it was released and there still isn't a lot of quality games out for it. I will say I just finished Persona 4 Golden. It was well worth playing through.

@datade in the US holidays could mean thanksgiving.  Europe and the UK is more likely to be an after thought as always but with Destiny a ps4 launch title it has a 31-12-13 release date which is kinda odd as i couldnt possibly think people would cancel getting wasted on new years eve in the Uk to buy a ps4.  im pretty sure most Uk people have the same illness as Gazza and have to have a swift drink or 20

Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@saadomar90 @Thanatos2k There have been reports of the codes not working at first.  Oops!  $10 more.

And don't think for a second EA or Activision won't be the first to pioneer a new version of the game NOT coming with the online pass for free.

Season pass won't cover the exclusive DLC only available if you preorder the game from Best Buy.  Gotta pay!

TTDog
TTDog

@2bitSmOkEy You don't have to buy the DLC... that's an option, the game will work just fine without it. It's your choice whether you want to extend the length of the game or not by buying it.

@Wizdigo: They "could" make a game where all you do is fart and charge you $1million but they don't.

If they thought they could get away with doing that they would have tried it by now.

Wizdigo

@TTDog @2bitSmOkEy But, they could make games that are "incomplete" and only put good story or multiplayer in with their DLC, practically forcing you to buy it. But, still it's all a choice.
