PS4 system update 1.52 available now, improves system stability

Latest system update now available for Sony's new console.

Sony today released PlayStation 4 system update 1.52, which promises to improve system software stability. The firmware update can be manually downloaded via the Settings menu. Users can also set their systems to automatically download updates by enabling Automatic Downloads.

Competitor Microsoft yesterday released a firmware update for the Xbox One, which addressed various SmartGlass, operating system, and matchmaking issues.

The PS4 has sold more than 2.1 million consoles around the world, and is now neck-and-neck with the Xbox One after Microsoft announced sales of 2 million consoles earlier today. For more on the PS4, check out GameSpot's review of Sony's newest system.

MY PS4 bricked last night.  It was after this update too.  Tried everything, had to return it and now will wait for a new one to show up sometime in Jan.  It was fine for a while, but then stopped working.  I imagine they'll work through these problems in the coming months.

Considering my bad experience with PS3 updates, I have adopted a personal rule of waiting two weeks before downloading.  Let other people be the guinea pigs and say if they've had serious problems.

"Improves system stability"

YEAH RIGHT! my games are closing more often after this update!!!!  and worst of all, this update is mandatory.

Only difference is that it downloads items in sleep modes BUT it does not update what's on the console in this mode, it only downloads what you send to the console via phone app. It does not update automatically.

What's this world coming to that people use an article about a system update as fanboy food? It seems like 3/4 of the comments on this thread are choosing to either a) use this update as evidence that PS4 sux, b) make some wild tangential pivot to XBox sucking instead, or c) spew non sequitur points about exclusives that haven't been released yet being better and thus console x is better than console y. The article isn't even about games...

Good lord - it's a system update. Both systems have had them, and both will continue to have more. Just like last generation... and it's by and large a good thing. It shows the company's commitment to improve their produce for the buyers. Sure, sometimes the updates don't fix everything, and sure, you wouldn't need updates if a console was perfect. But that has never been true.

Any excuse to wave a flag and say you're better, eh?

Glad at least some folks are actually discussing the merits and pitfalls of the update...

Finally got my Ps4 to work properly after this update. What a mess.

After installing 1.52 the system would beep every couple of seconds and the disc drive was stuck in eject mode.

No disc in the system yet it was trying to eject something.

After rebooting twice the beeping went away.

Tried to put KillZone disc in and the drive wouldn't take it. After about 4 to 5 tries it finally took the disc.

Ejected the disc and finally the eject looping stopped.

System good so far, just hope Sony doesn't release any patches that brick the system.

This is a sexy, amazing system that is fast, quiet, and a lot of fun to use. I've been really impressed so far.

Does the update add any games worth playing?

so what sony have done its released an unstable console that they have had loads of updates for already that they are still working to fix. with no decent exclusives.  well enjoy your ps 4 fanboys. and enjoy the cash you make off it ebayers. oh well off to play some 360. will play some ps 3 when i get round to getting the last of us.

Doesn't this update also bring the YouTube App as well as the ability to upload to Youtube?  That seems pretty major, unless no one cares now that all of these copyright claims are being made.

The thing puzzling me most, the xbox is freaking huge and has an external power supply. What kind of complete amateurs designed that thing, it is an engineering failure. The PS4 is smaller, sleeker, quieter, more powerful and only needs a standard power lead to run.

@KelboDelta Thanks for pointing out that the update is mandatory, something that Gamespot failed to report.

Mandatory updates are almost as evil as DRM.

It's just sad and pathetic. I don't have a ps4, but plan on buying one in the next few months. I came to the comments to see what this update has done to improve the system by people using it. For every one interesting informative comment there's twenty stupid fanboy fights. These people need to play games more and bitch over the internet less.

@Evil__Homer

Mine does the same thing.

But, I don't have or use any DVD's. It just tries to eject a DVD that isn't in.

@jtthegame316 There are no stability issues with ps4. I've not had one and I dont know anybody that has had any issues.

Xbone however has got a buggy user interface and simple things like taking a screen capture in game can cause the controller to become momentarily unresponsive. A video on this site showed a car going off the track because he took a screenshot and had no control over the car for a few seconds.

@t-16 The simple answer is this; To make absolutely sure the system doesn't have any kind of overheating problems like it's predecessor . The  longer version is that the One is large and the surface of it is like 65% air vents...not even painted on, but actual ventilation (if you look closely through the top you can see a giant fan). The external power brick keeps the current regulation outside of the box, helping it stay cool once again. I can say though that my Xbox is indeed whisper quiet, it makes a small noise when you slide a disc in, but afterwards you can't hear it at all

Personally I don't care what the system looks like, because I only look at it when I'm putting a disc in...otherwise I'm more focused on my tv.

@t-16 You are clearly not an engineer.  Placing the power supply in the box is a disaster waiting to happen.  It saved Sony a little in fab costs but anyone from an EE to RF engineer will tell you that the heat and noise (RF, not what we can hear) that a power supply generates is not worth the risk of placing it in the box.

xxmavr1kxx
xxmavr1kxx

@t-16 You do know the xbox 1 has 3 operating systems, and is designed to be continuously on just like a cable box.

Also, multiple reviews state the X1 is quieter.

The PS4 does have a better graphics CARD.

@rhinemaiden@G-CorleoneActually, rhinemaiden, Amazon got a pretty big shipment in yesterday for regular price.  I also bought one.

Corleone, I don't know if it shipped yet.  My Amazon account is set up through my wife's email (she has Prime) and I've been at work all day.

@untouchables111 It has a lackluster version of BF4, and bunch of other 720p 20 fps games!

KelboDelta

@grognard66 @t-16 well, same was said about ps3, and Xbox 360 did not have it internal, and still suffered from RROD in such a big scale that microsoft said that all first xbox 360 will have RROD eventually. That is not a study or degree, that is a fact.

Having it external is convenient in case the power supply breaks, you can easily replace it without opening your system. Other than that is a piece of brick you have to save some space for in your house.

My point is, both systems (ps4 xone) have advantages. Not everything is black and white. And having an internal power supply does not doom the system as the previous gen has shown us.

@xxmavr1kxx @t-16 Normally wouldn't jump in on this since the OP went out of his way to bash the One, but what does 3 operating systems have to do with the enclosure size? Nothing. The PS4 could fit 5 Operating systems in it's current case if Sony chose so. While it is quieter, both are extremely quiet and PS4 runs cooler still even at its much smaller size.

t-16

@Clemsonalum07 @icehawk001987 @xxmavr1kxx @t-16 Seriously I get that you guys like the Xone but you have to admit it is an engineering failure. There is no excuse for such a huge monstrosity that still needs a power brick. I could have done it better myself. And the PS4 does run cooler, are you incapable of accepting factual information is the better question. Please do justify the size and power brick I've yet to hear why it's needed, other than no effort on Microsoft's part in terms of design.
