PS4 system architect: Indie trend to "accelerate"

Mark Cerny says that the upcoming console will set a proper business structure to support indie development.

by

The lead architect of the PS4, Mark Cerny, said that the numbers of indie developers developing for PlayStation platforms will grow at a fast rate.

According to Mark Cerny, indie development will be a big thing on Sony consoles.

During a Develop Conference interview in Brighton, Cerny said that the PS4 ecosystem was in an ideal position to speed up the trend. "I see it that on PlayStation 4, [indie development] trends are going to accelerate. I think we now finally have the proper business structure to really support indie development. And the PlayStation 4 overall user experience is also set up very well for indie; you can share screenshots and videos of the games and elevate their visibility within the gaming community quite easily," he said.

Besides being the lead architect for the PS4, Cerny was responsible for programming, designing, and producing legacy titles such as Marble Madness, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, and Crash Bandicoot. Sony's next generation console is due to launch before the end of 2013.

I like indie games for the simple reason that indie devs are quite often more willing to try something different than what the AAA studios are doing. Also, because so many talented devs have been let go from the bigger studios we are seeing more of them get into indie game development, so the overall quality of indie games is getting a bit better.

I have just started to get into Indie games, they feel a lot more like the games I feel in love with 10 years ago than the games they're pumping out today. A lot more love seems to go into them.

Initially, Indie games were not a selling point for me. But as I am getting older I'm starting to realize that collecting 100 feathers in AC2 is a little more time consuming than I want. With the PS4 I will start to invest more time into Indie titles so that I do not feel tethered to a particular game.

you guys need more advertising on your console and to the non gaming public. no point having any indie game if they cant be advertised correctly

You need to remembar that the so called "Professional Games" for Consoles like the PSX, N64, Dreamcast, and even the Professionals on this Generation Mobile Phones, would be Called Indie Games when played on a XboxOne and PS4. But are Indie Games as easy Indentified as the AAA titles? Well who would have thought that a Game like Metro could be called a low budget Indie game? Like when Media Molecule showed up and showed us Little Big Planet, did we recognize it as an Indie game (new game, new developer) or did we see it as an AAA PS3 exclusive?

MS: We made the Xbox One with Advertising in Mind!

Sony: We made the PS4 have the proper business structure to really support indie development.

But what about TV support? Maybe I want to watch TV on my games console.

Gosh, it's like all Sony cares about these days are games....

Oh wait...

Microsoft: Small businesses should buy our "game console"

Sony: We're going to really support indie developers.

Indie games typically have such original concepts and ideas that it becomes impossible for me to ignore them

I don't really see how anybody could argue that this is a bad thing. The PC gaming scene is huge, as there are always indie developers making games and providing fresh ideas.

I'm all for more indie games but this comment strikes me as just a marketing ploy;  I'll believe it when i see it from sony

As long as we have Indie devs making games for consoles, we will never run out of creative and innovative games.

Respect Indies!

Hopefully the ease of development and easy porting between platforms that are largely the same will mean we will finally see more on the rise of super-indies (or the return of the mid-sized developer if you prefer).

There is an untapped market of games that falls between the £12.99 or less and £32 or more region that has yet to be untapped.

They still act like they're not mainstream even though Indie games are advertised all over Youtube, Steam, PSN and XboxLive and they make millions of dollars. I guess pretending to be hipsters is their excuse for making crappy overpriced games and begging for money on Kickstarter.

@Huskypaw I believe you're confusing "indie" for "amateur".

"Well for those that want TV Support, we have something called the XBOX One"

@Stebsis That is the best comment of the day. Really shows the mindset of MS. Not a mindset with the gamer in mind,

@emvv Sony had several indie devs showing games on stage at E3 during their press conference...

@Skhuff Hopefully these games can become apart of the mainstream as this industry needs new IP's instead of the same old rehashes of past games.

@Pre_ordered_PS4 Along with Nintendo and thankfully, I'm sick of the lack of choice of software in the gaming industry which is dominated by generic FPS/TPS's and games akin to GTA and Sports games which are all the rage. I want a wide variety of games and so do many others. Credit to Sony on this ocassion. It's ashame Microsoft don't have the same attitude.

@the_big_doggg Begging for money on Kickstarter? Dude do you even know what Kickstarter is? Even Peter Molyneux is getting funded by Kickstarter for his latest game.

@Lhomity @emvv I guess when a top Sony official is asked a question and answers it in an accurate way and it makes Sony look like it's doing a good job it becomes "a marketing ploy." There are still Xbots who are in E3 denial so don't be surprised.

@19James89 @Skhuff

never once have I seen a generic sequel for an actual good indie game (none that I am aware of at least), and I don't think they will start any time soon.

Skhuff

@19James89 @Skhuff This will only happen when more and more people start playing Indie titles and realize there are lot of promising games in the Indie market.

the_big_doggg

 Originally was supposed to be a way to get donations for worthy causes but more recently it has become a place for businesses to scam gamers concerned about overconsolidation in the gaming market.

Skhuff
Skhuff

@snova9308 @19James89 @Skhuff Are sequels necessary?

Look at thatgamecompany, they released 3 games and all of them were hit games. If you make a good game and people like it, it doesn't mean everytime you have to create a sequel for it, you can just come up with another game which follows your company's vision.

the_big_doggg
the_big_doggg

@Skhuff

No donating money to a for-profit business is not a worthy cause IMO. Also they are usually making promises they cant deliver on and pretending to be more "grass roots" than they really are, it's a scam that guarantees they make a huge profit even if the game is terrible.

@the_big_doggg @SamehH99 Taking advantage of people's good will? Aren't they fucking making games for the people? And aren't people getting different benefits by supporting them? Have you even backed up a project on Kickstarter?
