The PS4 still has a lot of work to do to catch its predecessor, as the PlayStation 3 has sold more than 80 million units worldwide as of November 2013. But the PS4 is showing positive signs of being able to do that someday, as the console is outselling the PS3 at the same period in their respective lifecycles.

Making a direct comparison to Microsoft's Xbox One isn't easy, since Microsoft has not provided a new Xbox One shipment number since November 2014, when the company announced a worldwide figure of close to 10 million units. Xbox One sales are on the rise, but Microsoft has not shared a new shipment number.
