PS4's MLB 14: The Show hits it out of the park

The PlayStation 4 version of the game has established it's success in a record-breaking week for the MLB game series.

Licensed baseball game MLB 14: The Show launched worldwide for the PlayStation 4 early last week, and has gone on to be the fastest-selling entry into the Major League Baseball series of games.

The announcement was made on Sony's official PlayStation blog, where it was reported that the game also exceeded all previous games in the number of preorders, day-one sales, and week one sales. An infographic (embedded above) published on the blog post shows that over 10 million games have already been played.

MLB 14: The Show was first released for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in April this year, with the PS4 version following suite on May 6. For the PS4 version, Sony had rebuilt all Major League Baseball stadiums, with textures that are four times as large and environment polygon counts rising from 150,000 to more than 1 million.

"with the PS4 version following suite on May 6" - should be 'suit'. ;P

What were the sales numbers for this? I'll definitely get it once the price drops or it goes on sale. I don't think it's worth $60. I might just stick with the PS3 version since the graphical jump isn't that huge.

PS4 version is only 3% better according to GameSpot's sister site, metacritic.

@blackace  If you have a PS4 i would highly recommend it. The game is awesome and is the best baseball game i have played.

I can't comment on the difference between the PS3 and PS4 version but i would think the load times are better on top of the graphic upgrade.

For graphics, the game looks awesome. The jerseys look real which adds a lot.

@shinjuki Baseball is incredibly popular in Japan as well. Not that it has anything to do with...well, anything. Just remember that the 360 had the console exclusive ping pong game by Rockstar early last gen. (Rockstar games presents: Table Tennis) I'd say this makes them even...

@shinjuki  Baseball's popularity in the US is no where near as high as it used to be and this was true even a decade ago at least. Funnily enough, Baseball's popularity in Japan is at an all time high. Even my hometown of Boston, one of the most historied and vocal Baseball supporting places in the world while having the Red Sox win the world series last year for major hype often get shafted from the noise people make when the Patriots and Celtics just make it into the play offs. Outside certain areas in Boston and surrounding towns, you have to look for Baseball fans meanwhile Basketball and Football fans are always easy to find. Football and Basketball have majorly overtaken Baseball as America's top sport. I have always found it surprising that EA invests in every major sport besides Baseball.

@C_A_G_E @blackaceif the load times are better on PS4 then I'd really hate to see the PS3 version.  I wait 5 minutes to load a game on PS4...

Pre game load times on PS4 are awful but the visual upgrades are substantial and worth the load time wait. Well worth the 60$ unless you already have it on PS3 in my opinion.

@xOmniCloudx @shinjuki

You do realize that baseball has been having a huge resurgence in popularity and has actually been shrinking the NFL's popularity lead over the last few years, right?

Also, the Red Sox winning was a huge deal especially considering they won following the Boston Marathon bombing incident.

I do not hear much NBA talk in general either. Hear WAY more football and baseball talk than basketball., Even while we have the freaking NBA playoffs going, I'm still hearing much more talk about baseball and even football which is just in it's off-season..

@Swedish_Chef @C_A_G_E @blackace  Never timed it. Always pick up my phone or start doing something so don't sit at the loading screen. Might actually go and time it tonight...

The loading faster was based on experience of faster load times in general with the PS4. As in it boots up faster and gets tot he XMB faster. Store is a lot faster.

@xOmniCloudx  yeah but baseball is also twice as popular as basketball so whats the point?

@LostProphetFLCL @xOmniCloudx @shinjuki  Football is the highest making sport out there. Baseball makes at most, half of what Football makes. That's not going to change. Baseball's popularity is not returning, it's just out of its major slump it was in but it's far from ever being the juggernaut it was while Football and Basketball only continue to grow on a wide global basis. MLB not nearly as much.  I've lived in Boston my whole life and only select areas ever make any noise about Baseball yet every area here is making noise about Football and Basketball. Playoff noise for Basketball and Football is bigger than World Series noise here. My sports feed never has Baseball be as big as those two either. Baseball is really only at select areas and most majorly in the US where you'll find much bigger communities for the other two outside the US on average. It doesn't even have a major video game audience going off sales either. Not even money hungry EA would pick it up despite picking up nearly every other major sport and making major bank with them. Baseball doesn't have as major global appeal as the others is why. It's majorly dependent on its legacy now. Without it, it'd be even less popular.
