PS4 Poaching Players From Microsoft, Nintendo -- Nielsen Study

Recent study found that 31 percent of PS4 owners did not own the PlayStation 3, but did have a Xbox 360 or Wii.

At 10 million units sold in nine months, Sony's PlayStation 4 has gotten off to a red hot start, outpacing Microsoft's Xbox One and even Sony's own expectations. But why is the console selling so well? Even Sony's worldwide studios president Shuhei Yoshida doesn't have a definitive answer.

But now, a new Nielsen study reveals that the secret to the PS4's early success could be that the console may be stealing players from Microsoft and Nintendo.

According to data from an April Nielsen study provided to Re/code, 31 percent of PS4 owners did not own the PlayStation 3, but did have an Xbox 360 or Wii. Seventeen percent of PS4 owners did not own any console of the last generation, according to the data. As Re/code points out, this data suggests that gamers aren't as truly loyal as comments on the Internet would have you believe.

One major potential limitation of the Nielsen study, however, is that it asked consumers to specify which console(s) they currently owned, not any systems they owned in the past. As a result, people who sold their PS3 to GameStop (or to a friend) to buy a PS4 would have been included in the study as someone who did not own a PS3.

"Assuming that most people didn't do that, though, the numbers underscore why launching at a $100 lower price point than the rival Xbox One was so beneficial for Sony," writes Re/code's Eric Johnson.

The PS4 and Xbox One are now sold for the same price: $399 (though Xbox One fans can also buy a $500 bundle that comes with Kinect). The Wii U, meanwhile, sells for $300.

Bloodbourne xbox one not powerful enough to run so becomes ps4 exclusive

Regretting that ddr3 choice yet?

Yeah or maybe its just that players are wise enough not to fall for anymore of Microsofts BS. And Nintendo? No their days are over.

The interesting part is that almost everyone I know that own both consoles including myself prefer the Xbox One.  The PS4 is a great piece of engineering but I think many buyers have become way to wrapped around marketing and sales figures.

Regardless I think things are going to even out during the holiday season when the two Halo games come out.

you sony fanboys need to wake up.  They are trying to sell you as many a possible before xbox one proves to be more powerful.  Mark Cerny lead ps4 architect,  said it himself

"To compare these two architectures, the one on the left (ps4) has 176 gigabytes per second for any access, the one on the right (idea xbox one) 88 gigabytes per second if the data is in system memory or a thousand gigabytes per second if the data is in that tiny eDRAM. At first glance the architecture on the right looks far superior to the one on the left, and sure, it takes a while to figure out how to use it, but once you understand how to use that little cache of eDRAM, you can unlock the full potential of the hardware." Xbox one...

People need to let the new gen mature a bit.  This is getting ridiculous...Of course last gen Wii owners who didnt adopt to Wii U took the ps4, it was $100 cheaper.  People tend to forget when the 360 and ps3 were launched the 360 had a COMMANDING lead on ps3 but leveled out eventually.  The xbox one has plenty of time to play catch up and it will, just like last gen. Only I dont remember all this riff raff about console sales last gen so early in the game...  If the news reports from this gen were around last gen, they would have said the ps3 is going to die because that console took 3-4yrs to start selling and sony had to drop the price $200 to do it...  I am a neutral gamer who owns all consoles but this is stupid...

That needlessly sensational title and tone, tho.

Other people enjoying PS doesn't make me enjoy it any more than people not enjoying it doesn't make me enjoy it any less. I don't find myself validated by people liking/thinking/doing like myself, but if there's one thing about a lot of gamers, it's that. If you don't like ________ then you have something against me. That's how people act. Otherwise, people could just enjoy their consoles (or PCs/Macs or WWE/TNA or Lady Gaga/Madonna) in peace.

Last gen I owned a 360 and a PS3. This gen I own a ONE and a PS4.  While people argue which system is better I get to enjoy both. Don't regret either purchase for a second.

Now THIS is the article I've been waiting for. I always thought: maybe PS4 is just having a huge boom because their existing players (from PS3) are just upgrading at a higher rate compared to 360 owners.

Seems that is not exactly the case. Idk, I just find this very interesting.

I switched from Xbox 360 to PS4 because of the exclusives that Sony gets, and because the price was lower. Infamous/Uncharted/The Last of Us were all more appealing than Titan Fall. Plus Sony has good reputation when it comes to hardware (consoles, laptops, Android phones), and PS4s handle graphics well.

another reason why ps4 and although lagging behind, xbox one is selling better than their predecessors may lie in two other factors: back in 2006 and 2005 not many people had lcd / plasma tvs with hd and without them, you couldn't get the most from the consoles, the initial investment bit may be a factor; another factor could be that as the gamers matured and started earning their living, it became easier to invest in expensive consoles, bearing in mind that the people who started playing video games at home in their youth (7 - 8 years of age) are in their 40's (i am 39 by the way)... :)

I for one used to own the xbox360. I owned it because it was better than the ps3 during that generation. I own a ps4 now because they basically copied what made the 360 great and then added even more awesomeness with exclusive devs and a lower price point. I think the x1 is a great console but not the best.

I truly believe that articles such as these serve no other greater purpose than to start console wars arguments or to induce click-bait.

of course they are, because everyone realised sony is the best. simple. only way you are getting better is to build a pc.

When Sony stumbled out of the gate with the PlayStation 3, I thought there was no way that they would ever be able to catch up to Microsoft's lead.  But they did.  Granted, it took them until the end of that console cycle to do it, but eventually they reached parity in terms of consoles sold.

So I'm confident that even if Sony opens up a huge lead over Microsoft, we won't really be talking about that in five years.  Eventually the XBOX ONE will see price drops, and those people who have a PS4 will decide that they can afford to get an XONE as well to play whatever exclusives they were missing.

All of this misses the point, however -- as gamers usually do -- that the money is made on game sales, not console sales.  And by that measure, the X360 is still the one to beat for most multiplatform titles.

When the Wii U gets down to about $200, I'm gonna get one.  Well, maybe $150....

Why is the PS4 so successful? Because it was designed in the WEST! There's a reason the Japanese market is collapsing.

Love my 360. But count me. And most of my xbox live friends as ps4 owners now. In all honestly, Microsoft hasn't Had a good new IP since Alan Wakke from a first party studio and that was in 2010!! Xbox went down the tubes as far as exclusives go after Kinect came out. Love gears. Tho.

I have a 360 but Microsoft pretty much pushed me away with their anti-consumer, DRM, no used games, etc. policies. Then on top of it the X bone is WEAKER than the PS4. Why would I buy it?

swatpup102
swatpup102

@rodd76dog There is zero chance the xbox one ever uses some extra supposed processing power in it's lifetime to make a game look or run any better than on PS4. You need to wakeup to the reality the game designers want the best quality they can at the shortest time to maximize profit, they aren't wasting time trying to unlock some variable of gigabytes per second processing capacity when the hard drive in it won't come anywhere near able to run it. Oh wait, you can't change out the hard drive under warranty to see if an SSD would be better or not.... Oops!

northArrow

@rodd76dog We heard that story last gen from the Sony fanboys about how the PS3 would eventually overwhelm the graphical abilities of the 360. That never happened and the two consoles remained on par with each other, mostly because third party developers aren't going to develop radically different versions of their games.

The same thing will happen this gen, the two consoles will remain pretty close in terms of power and even if they don't, nobody's going to use the additional power

Vylsith

@skiggy34 No, the Xbox 360 released a year before the PS3.  It's not the same situation at all.  The PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 by a considerable amount for most of the generation to make up for that 8 million console lead Microsoft had during that year.  PS4 is outselling the Xbox One 2:1.  The PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 when it finally launched a year later.  No comparison here.  That doesn't mean the Xbox One can't catch up, but your argument isn't a logical one.

@quiksilver38 I haven't jumped ship yet but I will be - probably sometime next year. While I loved my "bro box" for most of last gen, I can't help but feel hugely disappointed by how they basically abandoned the console three years ago. Recycling Halo, GOW, Fable and Forza (again) isn't enough to bring me back to the Xbox, they desperately need some diversity and I don't see that happening.

skiggy34

@quiksilver38 To play what?  I own both and my ps4 has an inch of dust on it.  Should have gone the other way first and then bought a ps4 in a year or two...  Why else would they have these dumb founded articles as to why the ps4 is selling so well. No one knows because the console has nothing worth its purchase and its selling so well.....  So you just joined me and the rest of the 10 million morons who jumped in toooo early...

Paying for live and psn, having to readjust everytime you swap controllers, barely having enough time to play on one console let alone two. Yea...no. PS4 covers all my gaming needs.

@stickybun Thats my plan also, I started original xbox, went to 360, PS3, now PS4 but find myself liking the PS side better now. I will get both one day, but the xbox 360 controller still smashes the PS controller.

skiggy34

@afollestad Fool!!  You think the 3rd time MS has a console in the race they wouldnt understand games are important.  Mark my word, if you owned a 360 in the past, I guarantee you'll end up getting an xbox one...  Just watch.,... PS4 wont be good for another 2-3yrs...  So far its a joke..  I dont care what sales tell you, I own one and Im probably one of millions thats highly disappointed...  But then you will get Sony ONLY fanboys that will say "its only the first year, give it time" yet when we talk about Xbox One sales in less than a year the Sony Only fans say " xbox loses" or "xbox is doomed"... Its really comical but you should not have dropped Xbox. Its looks far more promising than PS4 right now...  Plus Infamous sucked!!  Titanfall smoked Infamous, says me and every gaming website that rated it better...

@MondasM Like books, radio, tv, vcrs, and video games- time, technology, and change is why more people are buying more consoles. In the past very few people owned many books in the home, usually one the bible. As printing became cheaper, incomes grew larger, and the population got bigger - more books.

Same with many mediums that entertain or educate. Simple fact is the world has increased its middle class by 9% since 2000, and gaming is simply how many people past generation X prefer to spend their time. It is more then just incomes - it is that the gaming industry is as normal as the tv industry.

@theKSMM its worth it, especially since you can soft mod it to play backed up wii games. doesn't work for wii u games though. still you get the entire library of wii games backward compatible and can be run from an external drive.

@mattress805 People like you and your friends will be what turn the xbox one sales around.  You guys will eventually get xbox ones, if not all you and your friends some will.  Let the exclusives come out and we will see...  I know this gen will flip flop in sales just like it did last gen.  This gen MS will own the better exclusives and I own both consoles so I wont be missing anything...

@Vylsith @skiggy34 He's right. The PS3 originally sold very poorly, it did take a few years and several price cuts to make it a reasonable purchase. What really made the PS3 catch up to and eventually surpass the 360 in sales however is the long list of high quality exclusives which took a long time to hit store shelves.

This generation so far is copying that trend. It feels like it's taking forever for Sony to get those first party titles out, but when they do I think Microsoft is in even bigger trouble. MS doesn't have as many studios making games for their console, nor am I seeing any effort to bridge that gap. Eventually Sony's going to have dozens more games to play than the Xbox has

@skiggy34 @quiksilver38 Yeah, no one really likes playing the show, madden, need for speed, or battlefield on ps4 right? They only play those same titles minus the show on Xbox one!

@skiggy34 @quiksilver38 The PS4 has about as many good games as the Xbox One, and will soon have more.  I use mine quite frequently.  Stahp.

@ne0meg4 Both Sony and MS have always had franchises that I've wanted to play. Owning both is a no-brainer for me. There's room on my shelf for both. All of the hate that the ONE was getting was mostly herd mentality without people truly understanding what they were complaining about and more importantly before they even tried it. It's not a perfect system… but neither is the PS4. Both have pros and cons. Same as last gen.

@stickybun @ne0meg4 I've had an Xbox One and Wii U for months and think they are great.  I bought a PS4 today and am a little disappointed.  The UI is bland, the fan is much louder than the Xbox One while gaming, the rubber ends on the analog sticks look like they will wear out pretty quickly and the Killzone Shadow Fall game I bought looks like a PS3 title.  While I think it is a good console, I prefer the Xbox One with Kinect..  The Wii U is for Nintendo games of course.

skiggy34
skiggy34

@Defender1978 @stickybun @ne0meg4 Dude I completely agree with you.  I had to buy those thumb stomps that go on the sticks of my DS4 because the grip peeled off and YES finially someone else who doesnt think Killzone SF was that graphically impressive!! I thought it looked horrid and still think Killzone 3 looked better. The UI on PS4 is terrible!!  All I have is a long list of digital(mostly indie crap) titles that scrolls one way. My xbox one has pin points and I can place all my games in one spot instead of scrolling all the way left or right on ps4...  I too like my xbox one better right now...

@Defender1978 @stickybun @ne0meg4 I lost you at "Killzone Shadow Fall game I bought looks like a PS3 title". It is strong - and common - opinion that it is one of the best looking FPS on ANY platform at present. Mind you, it looks better than it plays. Gameplay is just OK, but visuals are stunning, and big step over KZ2 and KZ3 visuals.

You can find links like this everywhere:

@nikon133 @Defender1978 @stickybun @ne0meg4 Nah, Titanfall honestly looks better. I have both and Killzone is very saturated looking with colors that blend horribly. I couldnt even see enemies in the first level...  BF4 looks light years better....  I think websites were so excited and hyped for Killzone they lost their minds because I own every Killzone title and KZ3 looks better...  I dont care what you say I lost you at your entire post...

nikon133
nikon133

@skiggy34 @nikon133 @Defender1978 @stickybun @ne0meg4 Of course you do care, since you felt obliged to reply. Would be silly otherwise, wasting time to reply to something you don't give a crap about. Don't tell me you are THAT person.

Outside of that, opinions are free to have. I don't have a problem if you don't like visual style of KZ:SF... but from technical perspective, textures, model and terrain geometry, light and shadows... are miles above previous Killzones, which did look great for last generation. There's no way around it.

TF, I didn't play yet, so I cannot judge. BF4 I played only demo. Don't know how further final release pushed, but much as demo is concerned, I liked KZ:SF visuals better; again, visuals only.
