PS4 party chat supports up to 8 players

Sony confirms limits of voice chat service for next-generation console.

Party voice chat on PlayStation 4 will support up to eight players, just like the PlayStation Vita, social media manager Sid Shuman confirmed in the comments section of a Killzone: Shadow Fall post on the PlayStation Blog.

"Party Voice Chat will support up to 8 players on PS4, like PS Vita," Shuman wrote.

The PS4 will also feature cross-platform party chat, allowing console players to communicate with those on the PS Vita.

Sony will release the PS4 on November 15 for $400.

Who cares if the limit is 8 people? Anything more than 4 or 5 people and the chat becomes a shit fest

Not sure why this option is even coming to PS as most of them don't have friends, mic's or even like talking to other people. Then they say party chat is stupid lol, you have no idea how good party chat is and its not just used for playing games. Maybe when some of you get older and your close friends move away, you might understand. For one you can all go in party chat, load up the same movie, chill out and feel like your watching a film together like old times. PS owner make me laugh, total sheep. Be grateful you have this option coming to the ps4.

I'm fine with this. I've seen a lot of my xbox friends in live party chat and they never have 8 people in a chat. PS4 will still be superior to the Xcrap.

And yet it supports up to 4 controllers locally... I know it's no big deal but why decrease the number of players when it should be increasing? Xbone has done it...

Don't forget guiz, PS4 party chat is completely free; you don't need PS Plus for it.

All you need PS Plus is for online multiplayer.

Wow real original sony considering I've had this feature for over 8 years and our max was 8 and is now going to be increased

i hope ps4 has dedicated audio/sound processors like xbox one :)

ixxi-cobra-ixxi
ixxi-cobra-ixxi

oh and can you switch between game chat and party without leaving the actual party or?

ixxi-cobra-ixxi
ixxi-cobra-ixxi

will ps4 support private chat, and will it support cross game invites, and how will the sound quality be, does ps4 have dedicated processors like the xbox one? im curious, also since ps is getting party chat now, does that mean the service will be unified, meaning all games will support voice and party chat and invites like xbox live?

Be serious - how often would you have even 8 people on at once?

This is why allocating more RAM to the systems OS is a good thing. PS3 couldn't support party chat because the PS3 OS didn't use much RAM.

Why didnt you guys added this like you do in every single article about Xbox One with negatives related bottom of the story ;"Voice Chat via Bluetooth and USB WONT BE AVAILABLE for some time and they dont have date when its gonna be Available"

thats always been the limit for xbox live party chat since they unveiled it back in 2008. i dont think its because they couldnt support more users, its just that anymore than that and the party would become a mess. its hard to hold a conversation in a party with 8 people, i usually try to keep it down to 3 or 4, anymore than that is a headache waiting to happen.

cwsluke

I think it's only eight because it will support Vita players as well.

That awkward moment you think "only eight players!?", but then you remember, you don't have any friends :'(

The Bare Facts No need to be close minded, this is the best thing to come PS4 way.. Party Chat was the only thing missing from PSN to make it at level ground with XBL. Actually in many ways it now surpasses it.  Yes I still feel the magic number should of been 10 in a chat. but having 8 is still very productive.

Knowledge is Key: Those that don't understand try not to submit lines of text failure without knowing the how to's.. It's a party system provided by the Host, and that person has full control on who is allowed or not allowed in your private chat while you are all able to do the same or different things while on the PSplus PSN network.  The HITTERSAURUS-REX guy.. I know him and Sid Shuman responded to his question and that's how this article came to be.

Previous PS3 party chat had 6 person lobby and was a poor developed chat system, you all had to be on the XMB and the only way to talk was In a big dumb empty room with Mic'd up avatars zooming in and out. It was simply pure kaos for PS3 gamers. That wasn't utilized for the reason mentioned.

In Closing: This is the way guys, get used to it, make friends.. If you really think about it now you won't even have to listen to the nonsense of the other teams or strange online players of the world.  Just the voices of the people allowed within your closed knit party. ranging from 1 to 8 total mic'd up users.  (sorry for any typos. Long write) lol

I thought the PS3 had and update about a year ago to have party chat as long as everyone one was playing the same game.

Great it has it. I can talk to all my friends back home in Jamaica free while I'm on the PS4. But I probably won't be using it much otherwise.. I definitely don't like being in a call while trying to focus on my single player games, and especially not multiplayer I'd rather be chatting with the people I'm playing with.

But I'm glad its a feature still.

I was never a fan of party chat. It ultimately becomes a verbal wall-hack in my opinion. Of course, now it will be down to developers to stop party chat in shooters to prevent cheating. Sadly, many developers will undoubtedly ignore doing so and ultimately ruin multiplayer for people like me, who would rather not have someone on the opposite team who I'd just killed, tell his buddy where I was located.

Of course on PC, we'll never be free of this and this is one of few places where dead/alive/party chat can be limited for the sake of game/mode being played and ultimately make it more competitive and/or enjoyable.

Ghosting on PC games will always be there. Sad times. :(

The only thing that stopped me getting a PS4, those game prices. Ouch

@quidditch3 I have xbox. i agree ps3 was behind with the chat/party in general but xbox developed "party"4 years ago not 8, unless you were talking about the chat feature in general

@ixxi-cobra-ixxi Yeah. I really hate that I can't listen to my music through the Ps3 while playing a game. Definitly one point in favour of the 360.

@ixxi-cobra-ixxi

will probably work just like the vita. where you open up party and you can start matches with friends. it should let you switch between in game and chat. i think i saw someone playing a game and then they jumped to answer the call coming on ps4.  don't quote me on it but i think it was the first one showing the uj you know the love story. but we will see. so excited.

@UKFX Uh, you do realize that that's not actually cheating right? How is that any different from the "tactical" game modes where they prevent you from hearing your opponents' chatter? It's called working as a team, and honestly not enough FPS players actually take advantage of it.

UKFX
UKFX

@inscript VOIP programs have been around forever. Microsoft doesn't own VOIP.

UKFX
UKFX

@wrexness @UKFX  @wrexness @UKFX I just had to re-login and lost what I typed, but I'm not going to repeat myself. Instead I'll do this:

No it isn't cheating - officially. But:

2 vs 1. 2 folks in party chat. 1 man alone. 1 man kills one of the 2 men. 1 vs 1. The guy in party chat communicates with the other who is still alive to guide the remaining soldier on the party chat team to where the other soldier is. Advantage = party chat team.

I won't try to reason with you though and I won't give reasoning for it, because it'll just make folks mad. Also, your example about completely different game modes from a completely different game is immensely stupid when I'm expressing the stupidity of a chat system that runs outside of a game. I believe many folks would type DERP around about this point.

Party chat is good if it doesn't interfere with the fairness of the game when the participants of said party chat are in a competitive mode on a game. Of course many others do it, but not all and thus it would be unfair.

Good day.

@Cpt_Amurrica @UKFX So mature. Actually for us the mark sits at £50 a game. I suppose you could say that the Xbox and PS3 had the same before, but retail just took £10 off, an they may well do here but paying £40-50 for a game, £350 for a console that gives us 30fps games already and £40 for net play made me decide to spend my money elsewhere. Oh and hurr, hurr, that £350 for the PS4 that I already had, it went on a graphic card upgrade and a bike - you know, those things that Americans don't use too often... has two wheels. Oh by the way, you spelt America wrong.

(Must of upset someone who pre-ordered a console)

I also never said Microsoft owned voice over ip or created it, although Microsoft are the the first to do it , and also the creators of cross game chat on consoles

inscript

Your right but just not in video game consoles, TILL Microsoft xbox 360 invented the cross game party chat , so give credit when it's due! Voice over ip was for Internet phone service...
