PS4 outsells Xbox One in UK by 166,000 units in 2013

Sony's console comes out on top in the United Kingdom; GTA 5 the top-selling game at 3.67 million units sold in the region.

by

The PlayStation 4 was the top-selling new console in the United Kingdom in 2013, outperforming the Xbox One by a significant margin despite launching a week later, according to new data released this week from the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA).

Citing data from research company GfK Chart-Track, the ERA said the PS4 sold 530,000 units in the UK since its release on November 29, compared to 364,000 Xbox One consoles, which went on sale November 22. The PS4 drove around £181.6 million in revenue, compared to £144.5 million for the more expensive Xbox One.

On a worldwide basis, the PS4 and Xbox One are virtually neck-and-neck, with sales for each platform coming in at around 2 million units. Sony said it would sell 3 million consoles worldwide by December 31, 2013, but that date has come and gone with no new sales update from Sony.

On the software side, the top-selling game was Rockstar Games' acclaimed open-world action game Grand Theft Auto V, which moved 3.67 million units in the UK since its September release. Worldwide, the game has shipped more than 29 million units. In the UK, GTAV was the best-selling entertainment product of the year, outpacing DVD sales of James Bond movie Skyfall and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

"Games continues to deliver digital sales strongly, but it was disappointing that Xbox One and PS4 came so late in 2013 and then huge demand meant stock sold out quickly," ERA director general Kim Bayley said in a statement. "Retailers will be working hard in 2014 to maintain the sales momentum of these two great new pieces of kit."

That's not much of a gap....

I'm struggling to believe this, and I'm saying that as a PlayStation fan in the UK.

I had an Xbox one and loved it.  I really felt that Microsoft  took steps in the right direction towards being the console of the future.  If Microsoft would turn the X-One into a DVR it would be an excellent machine.  I had it plugged into my cable box and the picture was beautiful.  The Kinect voice commands was a little aggravating to me.  I have a really big living room and it had trouble picking up the voice commands when my son was running around making noise. Once I understood how to do the voice commands it was pretty awesome but I still had trouble responding with background noise.   I also didn't like how it took 50 minutes to download Call of Duty from the disc. I thought it should have been faster in that area. I love all of the features it has but I could not justify spending almost 600 dollars for the system so I returned it but I really do miss it.  I feel if they get all the bugs out and drop the price I'll jump at the chance to get another one!

Sony trolled the hell out of Microsoft and the X One still sold about the same worldwide. Good. I don't want either one to have the upper hand in sales like the Wii did. That didn't pay off for us gamers at all.

Well that shows how much I know about the UK games market because I honestly thought even with the £80 price difference between the XB1 and the PS4 that the Xbox One would outsell the PS4.

That said when I buy a next-generation console I want to see some innovative and something new on offer, so for me the PS4 just goes out of the Window. When it comes to originality and thinking of their own ideas Sony are third in line behind Nintendo and Microsoft.

I like the whole XB1 set up and that's saying something because I have never owned a Microsoft console and have owned all of the Playstations bar the fourth addition which just doesn't interest me or excite me in the same way the Wii U excites me and the XB1 is exciting me at the moment.

I like the look of the Xbox One, I like the features, the interface and for the first time ever the Xbox and not the Playstation looks to have the better exclusives. That said the price is really putting me off. If I buy an XB1, the Xbox Live subscription, an extra controller, a headset, a few games, a play and charge kit that's nearly £800.

That's a serious amount of money right there.

At no. 9 and 10 on that chart: Now That's What I Call Music? What the hell is that!?

Great news for Sony and MS. I personally bought an Xbox One because it does what I want and has the games I preferred at launch. Seeing that it's $100 cheaper and how bad MS botched their PR stunts I would be shocked if the One sold more. Either way both are doing great.

None of the sales stats will mean anything until a year after release.

I got an X1 and I'm loving it. I can only imagine PS4 gamers are loving their console as well. Next-Gen is awesome, there is so much potential in it. I bet you'll see things start picking up in a year or two.

Not much of a lead but both are doing well and that's good for us.

@kryotechIt is if you look at it percentage wise (45%) but in terms of actual figures, you're quite right and I can see that gap closing in March when Titanfall comes out.

2tonjunk
2tonjunk

@evil_snuggles PS4 is also sold in more places around the world than X1. X1 wont be world wide until spring. PS4 is about to go world wide. That gap will not be as wide. I think PS4 will have more units in home but not by much once they have been out for a few years.

@wyan_ 50% more isn't about the same.  You could use some math lessons.

No they didn't, Sony announced that number a while before Microsoft and has said nothing since then. Not to mention it launched in far fewer countries so far.

When it launches in more it's gonna take a hefty lead. One word : Japan. It's ahead without it's big region, February will put Sony far ahead so Microsoft have to get their crap together soon.

john1217727
john1217727

@wyan_ MS set themselves up for trolling with their decidedly anti-gamer reveal at E3.  A  little research will show you that the numbers are not "about the same worldwide." Eddie, the guy who wrote this article, is using figures a month old when he says sales are neck and neck.  I have to wonder why people are so eager to defend the Xbox Brand.  It took MS at least a couple of years to fix the hardware problems the 360 had.  Why would you trust them to do good by you with this new machine?

Microsoft and originality in the same sentence? Were u able to write that with a straight face?

@19James89 I have one and it needs works. I like but it needs more work. Still, XBL is much better than PSN.

john1217727
john1217727

@19James89 You might want to do a little more research before you buy the Xone.  It's still buggy and kinect only responds to exact commands. Motion control is not innovative - it was done to death last generation and many people have tired of it.  Most of MS's innovation and vision went into the multimedia cablebox tv watching stuff at the expense of the machine's ability to play games. It has less power than the PS4 and has trouble outputting at 1080p plus it doesn't work well with European TV's (judder has been reported check out Eurogamer's digital foundry for more on that.) Both the PS4 and the Xone give you the ability to share game video but, at this time, sharing video, is simpler on the PS4, you just press the share button, the video quality is better than that of the Xbox's and it allows you to share longer clips (15 minutes on the PS4 were I believe it's only 5 mins on the Xone. That said, these issues may be fixed on down the line. I've chosen to take a wait to see when and if these issues will be addressed before I will buy the Xone

@SiLenTWarrior29It really doesn't mean anything for the individual owner. Sales can affect whether a game gets a sequel or not, but consoles will continue to get made, so that's no big issue here. It's mostly just so that the company can pride themselves on their success and so fanboys can gloat and remind everyone of it.

@PartyGavinParty I've got both.. and I'm not really loving it. Find myself on the PC or 360 more. Sure, there's potential... but I didn't pay for potential. I paid for next gen now. Problem? The games.. where the fook are the good games.

@2tonjunk 33% more consoles sold for the PS4 with, as some claim, a PS4 supply problem, not much of lead? Really? You must be math challenged.

@evil_snuggles

yea, the xbox is currently sold in 13 countries. a fraction of the number of countries the ps4 is sold in.

remember? you ps4 fanboys love to count the number of countries your console is sold in before deciding who won the pissing contest.

19James89
19James89

@DaianI don't think the Japanese will jump on board the PS4 in large numbers in all honesty. Japan is Nintendo Land, Japan is handheld territory. The 3DS will outsell the PS4 week in and week out in Japan and I'd fancy the Wii U to give the PS4 a run for its money there as well.

19James89
19James89

@john1217727@19James89If I do purchase an Xbox One it won't be until the summer of 2015 at the earliest. Also I believe that most of what you say will be fixed by Microsoft in updates and patches, but you are quite right the PS4 is the better machine, but I still maintain that the XB1 will have the better games.

And for all the hype surrounding resolutions and framerates, Ghosts and BF4 looks marginally better on the XB1 from what I have seen.

@darkrayne@PartyGavinParty I have both as well and am having a blast personally. I even found terribly rated next gen games Knack and Ryse to be quite entertaining. This is actually the first time since the N64 that I've actually liked all the launch games that I've played so far. (of course the N64's launch only had Pilotwings and Super Mario 64, if memory serves, so it's not even a contest as far as # of titles.)

My favorite next gen game so far is actually Dead Rising 3 -which was not something I would have expected to be so fun and replayable. NBA 2K14 is incredible on next gen as well. Much better than even the p.c. version from earlier last year. Other than the titles I've already mentioned I've played and enjoyed Battlefield 4, CoD Ghost, AC4, and most all of the indie games released so far on the PS4 and Xbox One.

It's unfortunate that you aren't enjoying your new systems but I have to believe it is only because you haven't tried the right game yet. I've been gaming since the Atari 2600 and N.E.S. and this is the best launch that I've ever experienced in terms of # of quality games.

@darkrayne@PartyGavinPartyIf you didn't pay for potential, what the hell are you doing buying a console launch day? Pretty much that is all they are at launch day. You should be waiting until years later when they have a large library (if they were succesful so you better hope there were people who bought for potential cause a crappy launch could easily mean the console never takes off) and you can see if there are games you want.

Launch games are never that great and usually hurried so they can meet the very tight deadline and know they can get away with that as there won't be much selection to choose from.

That's funny! I do a connection test, the network connection is up and running without scratches...but then bam! Xbox Live is not! Then I go to xbox.com to check its status and find that Xbox Live is indeed having problems! Meh. I might be pressing buttons here, but these holy words must be said. Xbox Live sucks. Well, it's hellishly far from perfect at least.

@john1217727 You can use numbers all you want. No one really knows units sold and wont for weeks. That's what first Q1 numbers are for. They are almost 100% on the mark. Also PS4 is in more places around the world than X1. X1 one wont be out in places where PS4 is for weeks. That 33% more is sad looking at it in the long road head.

PartyGavinParty

@john1217727 $100 more for an Xbox. You must be economically challenged if you can't grasp the concept of supply and demand, it's a staple for High School students.

Both consoles are doing well, don't use statistics to try and prove anything.

@19James89 @Daian 3DS sales was so disappointing that Nintendo slashed the price almost half. And the fact that PS1 and PS2 destroyed N64 and Gamecube over there, I'd say you are wrong. And this is about PS4 and XB1. Nintendo may sell more WiiU in japan (which I doubt), it will still be killed everywhere else by PS4 and XB1. The point is, considering how PS3 is killing the 360 in Japan, it is expected to be the same on PS4 and XB1

rasterror

@TheDarkSpotIt must be something with your connection because everyone I know never has  or had an issue with Live. Even my friends that prefer PSN wish that their service was as fast and reliable as Live.

@john1217727@2tonjunk Now see, no one call you a fanboy or stupid because you pointed why it is not for you. I don't you the camera. I want nothing to do with it. Dualshock 4 is an improvement over the Dualshock 3.. I'm with you on that. It is a better controller but for me. The X1 controller is better. I like the placement of the sticks.I don't watch a lot of TV unless the Redwings are playing or on of my ghost hunting shows is on. I'm with you on the wii-u as well. How ever, I am missing out on good games that are only on wii-u. But... Aways a but in the room. If I'm able to live with out them for this long, then I can live with out them even longer or for ever. I do most of my gaming on PC. Not to sound like a PC fanboy. I like games and don't care what they are on. good games are good games no matter what they are on.

john1217727

@2tonjunk@john1217727 Until this generation, I have always purchased all of the consoles. Currently, I have the Dreamcast, the N64, the PS2, the Xbox 360, The Wii, The PS4, the PS Vita and the 3ds.  I pre-ordered the PS4 after hearing the E3 reveals for both next-gen systems based on the following factors price, specs, future exclusives (I like Japanese and single player games) and a basic mistrust of MS's ability to produce good hardware. I I didn't purchase my 360 until 3 years after the launch when the hardware problems had been taken care of.  Also, I don't watch a lot of TV and I don't like motion and voice control so, MS's all in one box vision doesn't appeal to me. I will most likely pick one up a year or two from now. Can't see myself picking up a Wii U though - tired of Mario and Zelda.  Never had a preference for controllers. That said - the Dualshock 4 is an improvement over the Dualshock 3.  I think competition between the big game companies is good for the industry and for gamers so, I hope all the consoles sell enough units to keep things interesting.

2tonjunk
2tonjunk

@john1217727@2tonjunk I have both. I like X1 better because of the games that are out now. I think the controller is much better than PS4's. But... We need more software. Both lack games at this point. The PS4 runs faster at start up and I like the home screen being cleaner than X1. It's not filed with bullshit. Still, Live is much better than PSN.

john1217727
john1217727

@2tonjunk@john1217727 To clarify, Since this article is about UK sales I was talking about the numbers in the UK only were Xbox won the last generation. Plus the PS4 came out later in the UK so it has had less time to sell.  That said - a 33% lead is considerable and the rest of the world is mostly Sony territory. Except for the USA, things are looking sad for the Xbox One right now..

Stogin
Stogin

@PartyGavinParty @john1217727 Except it's not selling as much as the PS4, hence the title of the article.  Just because it's at a higher price point does not mean that the sales are equal because of it, now you're making stuff up.  Also, by now I bet the difference between the sales ratios is even higher for PS4.

PartyGavinParty
PartyGavinParty

@john1217727 @PartyGavinParty A basic concept of supply and demand is that the higher the price of a product, the less number of units the product will sell, especially when there is an alternative that is $100 cheaper...

But that isn't the case here, Xbox is selling just as much as the PS4, regardless of the demand. What don't you get? Whatever man, it's hopeless. I'm going to enjoy my X1.

john1217727
john1217727

@PartyGavinParty@john1217727"Higher price, LESS CONSOLES SOLD, yet the XBOX IS SELLING JUST AS MUCH???" Your statement, like the one before, is illogical and doesn't make sense..

PartyGavinParty
PartyGavinParty

@john1217727 Higher price, less consoles sold, yet the Xbox is selling just as much as the PS4. That's awesome for Microsoft.

Twist it anyway you want it dude, the Xbox should be selling way less.

john1217727
john1217727

@PartyGavinParty@john1217727 Xbox supply is good but higher than the demand - that's why it's easy to buy one online. It's getting killed in the UK by the PS4. Released earlier and still has sold less than the PS4 in the UK. Therefore, demand in the UK for the PS4 is higher than demand for the Xbox One.  I know you purchased a Xbox so you're just being defensive because it's not faring as well as the PS4.
