Update: The NPD Group has released its sales data for September, and when looking exclusively at sales of new, physical copies in the US, Destiny sold best on Xbox One. However, this doesn't account for copies included in the PS4 Destiny bundle. Also of note is the fact that Sony said PS4 is the #1 Destiny platform worldwide, whereas the NPD Group only tracks US sales.

Original Story: The PlayStation 4 has routinely outsold the Xbox One in the United States (and in much of the world) since the two systems were released last year, and September was no different. Ahead of today's release of September sales data from the NPD Group, Sony announced PS4 was the best-selling console once again.

Among the announcements Sony made is the fact that September produced more revenue on the PlayStation Store in the Americas than any month before--and 90 percent more than September 2013. Minecraft made its debut on PS4 during the month, but Sony largely attributes this to Destiny, which broke PSN records in categories like most pre-orders, most launch day sales, and most first-week sales.

While those PSN records are due in part to the general trend of more people downloading their games, PS4 was the most popular choice for Destiny players, according to Sony. Citing Activision's internal estimates, PS4 "is the #1 platform worldwide for Destiny based on units sold through as of October 4, 2014."

Destiny is the most-played game on PS4 currently, with five times as much time spent playing it as the second most-played game (which was not identified). In the week before the game's launch, PlayStation Plus subscriptions increased by 115 percent, perhaps signalling interest in being able to play the game online. Keep in mind, the PS4/PS3 versions of Destiny include exclusive content for at least the next year.

Regarding sales of the PS4 itself, Sony didn't provide any specifics, but it did say that--thanks to the limited edition PS4 bundle--the system sold better than any other month in 2014. Compared with August, sales of the PS4 tripled, and it sold more copies of Madden NFL 15, NHL 15, and FIFA 15 than the Xbox One.
