PS4-Exclusive Days Gone Has Ridiculously Huge Swarms of Zombies

Ride your hog all the way to Armageddon.

One of Sony's many surprises during its E3 press conference today was Days Gone, a new post-apocalyptic zombie game. However, the gameplay Sony showed off of it makes it seem like few other zombie games that have come before.

Deacon St. John, the protagonist, rides into an abandoned town on his motorcycle--he is a biker and a drifter, after all. However, once he jumps off, everything goes to hell. The Days Gone demo looked like many other pretty, open-world survival games until the zombies appeared.

Now Playing: Days Gone - E3 2016 Gameplay Demo

These aren't the shambling, dumb zombies like in Dead Rising, or the lone-wolf infected of The Last of Us. These zombies operate in fast-moving swarms, more like bees than normal zombies. These are the fast zombies of World War Z.

And it looks tense, terrifying, and exciting. Deacon runs through buildings and the town, desperately trying to fight them off, while this sprinting mass of infected creatures hurtles after him. They barrel through doorways, break down steel walls, and chase him with single-minded focus.

But Deacon is not fully defenseless--he's got guns, and he's got the ability to craft better weapons. In one scene he rips a part of a car engine out and fastens it to his pistol, creating a silencer. Unfortunately for him, the zombie horde spots him, making stealth useless.

Days Gone looks fascinating, like a cross between the swarms of World War Z and the tense, dark tone of The Last of Us. I'm really excited to see more of it and hopefully get my hands on it soon.
