PS4 demand may exceed supply - Jack Tretton

GameStop executives to buy "every single unit" of the PS4 that Sony can manufacture, according to SCEA CEO.

Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton has said during a Forbes interview that demand for the PS4 may exceed its supply.

Thanks to Sony's E3 2013 press conference, more people are pre-ordering the device.

Tretton said that "given the technology that [SCE is] offering, given the software lineup, given the price point we have, that [it will] have consumers interested in excess of what [the company is] able to manufacture." He was also told by GameStop executives last week that GameStop would buy "every single unit" Sony could manufacture. Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said a week before that the demand for the PS4 "may well outstrip supply".

Tretton said during Sony's E3 2013 press conference last week that PS4 games would not need regular online check-ins and disc-based PS4 games could be traded. For more information, check out GameSpot's coverage on Sony and its new console.

How many PS4 can Sony manufacture a day? Gamestop keeps taking preorders. What are the chances we'll actually get one at launch?

I'm glad I pre-ordered my launch edition PS4 on Amazon before they sold out.

Failing to see the reason other then exclusives for buying a X-one. PS4 is cheaper and didn't try some BS.

Good thing about all the rage over xbox dropping drm and what not it means more ps4's available for people that really want it

I am with Sony since  the first Playstation one  which I still have here working . Sega and Nintendo also were part of my Entertainment but since Nintendo was like “Disney” of the games and refuse to support hardcore gamers plus not so many games that could make you dying for in N64  and Dreamcast had a short life, I decided to try the Playstation and since then for me  it has been the best choice ever made.

I think M$ got to smart and greedy for their own good. Sony will make them pay for that mistake.

I can tell you all that I'm back to Playstation after 10+ years with Xbox.  I was expecting a tough decision, but M$ bungled it so badly there really was no decision to make.  Since the 360 I had was on its last legs I just beat the rush and traded it in for a new PS3 to get ready for fall releases and PS4.  My local Gamestop was inundated with 360's so I was not the only one trying to beat the rush.  Playstation most definitely has my business for the next gen.

I'll try to get it on release, it'll be fun if you go with people. And if I don't get it, so what, I tried. It's not like they can't/won't make more,

after that crap that xbox pulled I wouldnt have bought their system even if they gave a free game with it. Who is to say they wont go back to their old drm after some time has passed. What I think will happen is they will slowly start working in those restrictions once they can justify  to the people for doing it.

You said

"It's selling like crazy? The console isn't even out yet, plus MS's stick has gone up 6% since today's no DRM announcement. Pre-orders are "selling" like crazy, not the consoles itself.

Aldo, Gamestop & Gameplay both have applauded Xbox One's new policy. So, the tides have changed my friends."

Well to that I say yes it's selling like crazy, preorders are sales plain and simple, as for Gamestop applaudingMS of course they are happy that a big new console is going to allow used games with no fee as that is Gamestops biggest money maker (the used game market)

Also MS stock going up is really only relevant to investors.

Pull your head out of your ass.

mkeezay22
mkeezay22

After what MS pulled I won't bother with the X1, yeh they may have removed their policies on used games and online checks but only after they thought it would hurt sales and lose them money.

I can't trust MS enough to buy an X1 simply for the fact they could reintroduce these policies in the future and the fact they did it in the first place has made me lose all faith in MS.

I think gamers should remember what MS tried to pull on us and vote with our wallets next gen.

I'll be grabbing a PS4 for it's exclusives and lower price and keep my PC for all the X1 titles that trickle down to PCs after release.

Can someone help me?

I've been trying to figure out, honestly, what is the PS4 offering me that the Xbox One isn't... (considering the fact that 100 bucks isn't an issue for me since I'll have the console for like 10 years so don't mention price)

The xbox one just seems like such a better value from an entertainment standpoint

Okay, maybe this is the wrong place to post this, but I will just get people to look on both the good and the bad side of having DRM.

Pros:

IF Xbox would keep DRM, you would be able to download stuff fatser than ever. Using a cloud-system.

Everything about internet & internet connectioin in general would be better than PSN.

Cons:

Obviously, if you live somewhere where you're not always able to get internet connection cause your internet is SOOOO bad, You wouldn't be able to play on it, mostly.

So for north/northwestern Europe, DRM would almost JUST be a good thing.

But for like Africa, middle-east & most of the "poor" countries, this would be awful. You would have no other choice then getting another console/PC.

Ps. I am getting a Ps4, so don't call me a MS-fanboy. though I don't have a problem with any brands.

Thanks for reading.

I think I'll just wait it out, every console launch runs out of stock regardless of how much they make.

There seems to be a history of console shortages on launch. I can understand not making too many incase of failure, but we are talking about a system that is guaranteed to sell a shtiload. I guess I just don't understand how you can't be  ready for something you have had years to prepare for.  I am still getting one, but probably sometime after the dust settles a bit.

Tobajas

Hmm I think this is pretty much bullshit since I doubt that I will have any problems at all with getting a PS4 on release or around it.

A corporate talking head brings bold predictions about their future product so it must be true. The reason corporate big wigs overhype something is to create consumer panic. "Omg, my 13 yr old will kill me if he can't get his hands on the latest console when it comes out so I better get my preorder now because that Sony executive said there will be a PS4 shortage."

This article (while very "markety", which I always hate) reminds me of the good old days of the original PlayStation. I remember how much I wanted one. In fact, I wanted one for months and months until I finally managed to get one on order before they sold out AGAIN. lol

Sony, please don't pull a Nintendo and short supply to create an artificial demand. Establishing a bigger install base and a strong online community quickly will be essential to the success of the Xbox One or the PS4... unlike Nintendo who seems to sell consoles regardless of any bad decision they make. As one of the suckers that pre-ordered at Eb games... my fingers are crossed there will be enough PS4s to go around and meet the Gamestop demand.

Darkangel2154

Only thing I see the Xbox one doing for me is "Xbox turn my PS4 on" but as we all know the PS4 can do it by itself.

I said it below but I'll say it again...

I doubt Sony were waiting for Microsoft to make their move first on the DRM issue!

It's simple enough... Sony didn't announce it because they KNEW there would be a backlash.

Why wouldn't there be? It's wrong!

If you couldn't foresee a backlash on this issue then you shouldn't be in the business.

Sony knew what they were doing in Feb 2013, they still do. They had MS guessing as to what they would do... not the other way round!

Sony kept quiet because they knew damned well that MS would shoot themselves in the foot over this and that's exactly what's happened!

What better way to market your new console? Let your rivals do all the work for you and it doesn't cost you a damned thing!

Well Done Sony, you were smart before, now you look untouchable!

M$ is trying to save face, they're saying they're changing their shitty policies for us (totally not for themselves because they panicked when they saw PS4 preorders are 3 times more than X1).

Congrats Xbox One fanatics and the gaming community in general. This is how the gaming community should work for the consumer as we are in fact the consumer and we know what we want. Consumer base rages about an important issue and the recipients of said rage actually listen. Personally though I had more respect for Microsoft when they sided with publishers on this particular issue despite the fact that they had chosen the wrong side-at least they were taking a stance in supporting publishers in an effort to help them snatch sales from used games sales. That being said-it's up to us as the consumer to inform game publishers that the product they're putting out is not meeting our expectations and stop excepting just anything. If they don't want use to by second hand or trade then they need to really start listening to what it is we want from them. Yes they have a job to do and their own creative vision to think of but it's always ultimately up to the consumer whether or not their product does well. So please stop accepting bullshit! Can't stress that enough.
