PS4 demand may exceed supply - Jack Tretton

GameStop executives to buy "every single unit" of the PS4 that Sony can manufacture, according to SCEA CEO.

Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton has said during a Forbes interview that demand for the PS4 may exceed its supply.

Thanks to Sony's E3 2013 press conference, more people are pre-ordering the device.

Tretton said that "given the technology that [SCE is] offering, given the software lineup, given the price point we have, that [it will] have consumers interested in excess of what [the company is] able to manufacture." He was also told by GameStop executives last week that GameStop would buy "every single unit" Sony could manufacture. Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said a week before that the demand for the PS4 "may well outstrip supply".

Tretton said during Sony's E3 2013 press conference last week that PS4 games would not need regular online check-ins and disc-based PS4 games could be traded. For more information, check out GameSpot's coverage on Sony and its new console.

I'm a huge xbox fan and i've also had various playstations , I can't believe how wrong they have got it with this new sky+ plus box they are releasing, With the Ps4 this next gen, microsoft must think people are thick

How many PS4 can Sony manufacture a day? Gamestop keeps taking preorders. What are the chances we'll actually get one at launch?

I'm glad I pre-ordered my launch edition PS4 on Amazon before they sold out.

Failing to see the reason other then exclusives for buying a X-one. PS4 is cheaper and didn't try some BS.

Good thing about all the rage over xbox dropping drm and what not it means more ps4's available for people that really want it

I am with Sony since  the first Playstation one  which I still have here working . Sega and Nintendo also were part of my Entertainment but since Nintendo was like “Disney” of the games and refuse to support hardcore gamers plus not so many games that could make you dying for in N64  and Dreamcast had a short life, I decided to try the Playstation and since then for me  it has been the best choice ever made.

I think M$ got to smart and greedy for their own good. Sony will make them pay for that mistake.

I can tell you all that I'm back to Playstation after 10+ years with Xbox.  I was expecting a tough decision, but M$ bungled it so badly there really was no decision to make.  Since the 360 I had was on its last legs I just beat the rush and traded it in for a new PS3 to get ready for fall releases and PS4.  My local Gamestop was inundated with 360's so I was not the only one trying to beat the rush.  Playstation most definitely has my business for the next gen.

after that crap that xbox pulled I wouldnt have bought their system even if they gave a free game with it. Who is to say they wont go back to their old drm after some time has passed. What I think will happen is they will slowly start working in those restrictions once they can justify  to the people for doing it.

You said

"It's selling like crazy? The console isn't even out yet, plus MS's stick has gone up 6% since today's no DRM announcement. Pre-orders are "selling" like crazy, not the consoles itself.

Aldo, Gamestop & Gameplay both have applauded Xbox One's new policy. So, the tides have changed my friends."

Well to that I say yes it's selling like crazy, preorders are sales plain and simple, as for Gamestop applaudingMS of course they are happy that a big new console is going to allow used games with no fee as that is Gamestops biggest money maker (the used game market)

Also MS stock going up is really only relevant to investors.

Pull your head out of your ass.

mkeezay22
mkeezay22

After what MS pulled I won't bother with the X1, yeh they may have removed their policies on used games and online checks but only after they thought it would hurt sales and lose them money.

I can't trust MS enough to buy an X1 simply for the fact they could reintroduce these policies in the future and the fact they did it in the first place has made me lose all faith in MS.

I think gamers should remember what MS tried to pull on us and vote with our wallets next gen.

I'll be grabbing a PS4 for it's exclusives and lower price and keep my PC for all the X1 titles that trickle down to PCs after release.

Can someone help me?

I've been trying to figure out, honestly, what is the PS4 offering me that the Xbox One isn't... (considering the fact that 100 bucks isn't an issue for me since I'll have the console for like 10 years so don't mention price)

The xbox one just seems like such a better value from an entertainment standpoint

@keltonkelly1989 I know right? My PS4 overheats all the time.  I know because I totally have one and know.  Because that's the only way to know.  Having one.  That's how you know.  Crazy how that works.

@jcouch2020 are you serious. sure don't take the hardware into account, which is obvious why, since PS4 is more powerful than Xbone in every single aspect, be it GPU or ram. but software? lol. everything Xbone has right now will be on PS4 under different contract agreements. Netflix, you want it? you got it. streaming games? its there. letting other help you beat a game over online, its there as well. the only thing PS4 didnt have is the family share feature and the 24 hour check up, which is not the case anymore since xbox removed all of it. and of course, Xbone still might be a cable box, but i assume barely anyone even uses cable tv anymore. so if its not hardware or software, what is it? tell me? games? haha, dont make me laugh and drop a Halo 5 on me.

@Revl8n I've been with the PS for almost 20 years (since the PS1). In all those years I don't think Sony has ever treated their consumers as MS did: to go so far as to challenge their intelligence and strip them of their basic rights in the marketplace!

Of course it's a good thing that MS changed their policies, but I don't trust their sincerity, they did not reach out to their customers for feedback. I see this only as an indefinite change.

mkeezay22

@Gamerhomer I'm hoping some of those exclusives are timed or will come to PC at least even if it's months later

@mkeezay22 You realize Microsoft is a buisness right? All businesses are motivated solely by profit. They care about their consumers only because their consumers are the ones that give them money. Sony is the same, along with Nintendo and every other company in a capitalistic society ever. I'm not an MS fanboy by any means; I have a PS3 and plan on getting a PS4. I'm just pointing out that being mad at MS for being motivated by sales and money doesn't make any sense.

@atownkid33

PS4 is offering you a more powerful system and cheaper.

How can you say don't bring the price into it?

Rcr152
Rcr152

@atownkid33 The playstation4 offers more power, a redesigned controller with some cool features like touch pad, share button and head phone plug in capability’s. Not to mention a build in motion tracking system and an A symmetrical design (and since we are also A symmetrical, its seems to make more sense and feel more natural). Plus it’s not only cheaper out of the gate but PlayStation + is less expensive than MS membership and has some awesome perks like free games every month and discounts. The other big one for me is that the xbox 360 died a lot (my best friend went through 4 with a lot of use) but my fat ps3 is still kicking from day one with lots of gaming and bluray use… not sure if this Trend is true across the board but I have heard a lot of complaints about this and with xbox1 pushing “always on” you may be buying a MS x1 more than a couple times…

Also for me the exclusives seemed more exciting and they had some cool new IPs.. And the new PlayStation interface seems really nice and user friendly.

KaptajnKnap
KaptajnKnap

@atownkid33 Well for one thing, PS4 has a touch screen controller, that might come in handy. You can also record vidoes of your gameplay and upload them, but I can't remember if XBox has gotten that feature too.Last time I checked they hadn't.

In terms of hardware the PS4 has GDDR5 ram, where the X1 has GDDR3 ram - I have no idea what this is going to mean for the gameplay. The only thing I'm really  excited for is the exclusives titles for PS4, the new Gaikai technologi (VERY fast and reactive online play) and close to zero loading time. From what I've seen I favor Sony on this matter.

@atownkid33 Xbox One doesn't appeal to me like the PS4 does. To me Xbox One sounds like a glorified cable box. I don't watch a lot of TV and the TV shows I do watch I watch online. I don't care about the Kinect. I don't care about being able to talk to the Xbox. I just want a good game machine and the PS4 offers more value for me at a lesser price.

BohemiaDrinker

@atownkid33 Well, up to yesterday, it was about flexibility (playting offline, lendinge games, etc) and privacy. Right now, it's all the same except for the price, so go with what you prefer,

@mkeezay22 Both Systems will sell fine. No matter the popular opinion or because of E3.

mkeezay22
mkeezay22

@misterbutt @mkeezay22 I agree and disagree, yes the companies goal is to be profitable for them and there shareholders but there is a line, when you alienate the consumers that support you and your shareholders you cross that line.

When MS put it's crazy policies about preowned games and online checks into place for it's upcoming console it alienated it's fans by putting profit as it's sole purpose, by showing no regard for what gamers wanted for profit they caused a backlash that is now making them remove the policies they put in place to make profit at the gamers expense.

Finally they are changing a bad policy to make money, to a new better policy to make money because there first policy to make money failed, and all because they alienated the people who give them that money in the first place,it's pure greed.

Sony didn't show that with a cheaper more powerful console it's nice to see they think of gamers and shareholders.

@Rcr152 you sir, are correct... I know about 2 years ago survey had shown x360 to be faultiest console ever released... i bought one on day1 release waited for 7 hrs in line just to get it that day.. failed less than a month later and the next 3 systems ms sent me were alrdy faulted when i got them... so they finally gave us a BRAND new one after all the mistakes and i sold the system off n bought ps3... ONE ps3 failed in 6 yrs and i repaired it myself with an ez fix..

atownkid33
atownkid33

@chris091471 I understand your preference, but all you've done is told me what you don't like about the xbox one... I'm lookin for someone to tell me what they like about the PS4 (besides price) that makes it preferable over the xbox one, not simply what they don't like about it.

When you put it the way you did, it sounds like you're choosing PS4 simply because you don't like xbox one and it's your only other choice for a premium console. Am I right?

dedsdidgdn

@jdt532 @dedsdidgdn ahhh the misinformation! The launch-day system by itself was sold out 12 days ago, and the bundles were available way before that... On Amazon.

Upat3am
Upat3am

@mkeezay22 @Upat3am I always wondered what Microsoft would have done if they were second at E3. Would they have changed things in a scramble to compete with Sony or would they have just followed through with there show and just let the crowd decide the outcome.

mkeezay22
mkeezay22

@Upat3am @mkeezay22 Yeh the months leading up to release are gonna be crucial for MS and Sony, I think MS first goal should be to regain trust from 360s fanbase but idk how they intend on doing it, maybe some free XBLive for 6 months or free games.

They have an uphill battle after all the bad press recently

Upat3am
Upat3am

@mkeezay22 @Upat3am I agree I am looking at the Ps4 as my preferred choice for next gen gaming console. Maybe it's because I have so much confidence in Sony products or because of the fact that I have never owned a Xbox. Maybe I'm just a little bias. Luckily I have a few months to see both consoles and wait for more information on both.

mkeezay22
mkeezay22

@Upat3am @mkeezay22 I have no doubt they will, I'm just stating that I think PS4 will sell better and it will be the console I purchase.

@Upat3am @mkeezay22 Agreed No matter what the Fanboys say sales on both systems are to be projected pretty high.

atownkid33
atownkid33

@mkeezay22 @misterbutt the only reason MS attempted to implement DRM policies was for the profits of developers, NOT for MS.

It makes sense when you think about it, if developers make money off their new games AND also get a profit off of the reselling of their used games (instead of paying ripoff artists like Gamestop) developers will have larger budgets to deliver better games to us as consumers.

MS is not actually being greedy here, they are trying to share used game profits with the people that have spent long hours to deliver awesome games and deserve to profit off of them: the DEVELOPERS

@atownkid33 @chris091471 Im fully nutural to both consoles cos Im a pc gamer so to say. I don't see why so much fuss happen in the console war.
But if it comes to choosing a console, and I probably will. Since I can. Money is not the issue then I would go for PS4

Now last generation I owned both, 1st would be xbox 360. So Im no fanboy of any company. But as a PC user, I do dislike MS a bit. Not as a console developer! There are too much to explain.

But this year on E3 MS just done what MS does best, show there own self. So for many this will be a reason to get PS4 so X1 doesn't do well.

Not a reason for me though, my main reason is simple to go for a better console which does more and offeres more. That would be PS4, it's stronger by many factors. PSN will be dramatically improved, and mostly likely be cheaper then Xbox Live.

Also the exclusives, I play mostly PC games. A lot of xbox games come out on Pc. Im sorted :D
PS4 exclusives wont, and they in my opinion are better. Sony got more RPG's, Adventure, style games and such. Which is what I prefer. Fps, to Rts + Others are all on PC. The ACTUALLY better gaming device. So if you got money to spend,. buy PC :)

But that's my view on it, I may even get x1 eventually when I feel like it. But for now Sony doing a good job and Im buying it. Even if I might not play it as much as I would want too.

@atownkid33 @chris091471 with the XB1 you cant replace the hdd with PS4 you can that's the biggest plus for me, also MS approved headsets = more money upfront & im happy with my Astro A50's..Sony has the most first party developers, 12 in all & with higher specs you will see a real difference in first party aaa titled games over the XB1...

@Forgetfulhearer @atownkid33 @chris091471 i'm primarily a ps fan because it doesnt always seem like its about money.. although it really is they go about it a different way... dunno maybe its just me... BUT i actually love both systems... but tbh i primarily have my 360 for halo and gears... i'm mostly a ps fan and buy xbox pretty much for its exclusives... im jus pure gamer and like what ps and the ps+ offer better than XBL

JumpoffjoeyP
JumpoffjoeyP

@atownkid33 @chris091471 chris said he likes PS4 better because it offers more value at a lesser price... he named the things not that he didnt like about xbox.. just the things that don't really matter to him and that gaming is all he wants from his console and it has a 100 less price tag... that is what he likes about it lol...

Forgetfulhearer
Forgetfulhearer

@atownkid33 @chris091471 Buying another console because you dislike the others sounds like a pretty good reason to me. Spending money on things you dont like is generally a bad practice. But you'll be hard pressed to find someone who is totally neutral when it comes to the xbox one and PS4.

bxphenom7
bxphenom7

@atownkid33 @chris091471 Well, I'm choosing the PS4 because it's 40% more powerful than the Xbox One. So, it'll play multiplatform games better. However, I will be getting an Xbox One at some point for their exclusives. I hate not being able to play a game because its exclusive. Historically, I've always like PS exclusives better and they announced 30 PS4 games are in development, 20 coming out next year, and 12 of those will be brand new franchises. Talk about exclusives!
