PS4 can be turned on remotely

Sony says when users buy titles through smartphone app, PlayStation 4 will automatically wake up to initiate downloads.

The PlayStation 4 can be turned on remotely via the Playstation smartphone app to begin content downloads, Sony has confirmed.

Sony's president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida announced the news on Twitter recently.

The PS4 launches November 15 in North America, November 29 in Europe, and in 32 countries in all by the end of the year.

Sony also confirmed this week that the PS4 will support cross-platform party chat between the next-generation console and the PlayStation Vita.

Doesn't Steam work this way to.

Wait a second...your console needs to be connected all the time. When did they sneak that in?

@ciphfer

Um... generally if you want to use the internet with a device it has to be connected to it. Funny that.

Its not like they're making you use the feature.

Wake up? Oh snap. That implies it is on all the time like the much maligned Xbox One. Will this horror never end?

@HAMMERCLAW Wake on Lan has been a feature in PCs since the late 90s. Few electronics are truly off if they're still plugged in.

Um ok thats just paranoid. The issue over the Xbox One was that it HAD to connect to the internet for you to play games on it.

Obviously in order to use the internet to connect to the PS4 you are going to have to connect the PS4 to the internet. Thats kinda how it works lol.

If you don't want to leave it connected then disconnect it you can still play offline games. That was the issue.

We are willing to hear more about the Remote Play function for the Vita

I wouldn't trust psn with my information period....

This to me is worrisome, because once the PS4 is hacked they can access your account info, delete your stuff, or brick your system by sending it bad Firmware updates via smartphone app. I know that Sony intended it for PSN but it could be curcomvented by hackers for other reasons.

sweet..I want more info about the Vita remote play functions..

Oh really xbox took the blu ray which sony had and wireless, and the playstation had a controller before the xbox and the xbox copied the same button layout

@Irvin Salazar The xbox originally copied the dreamcast look at its controller and online functions Dreamcast had it first. M$ makes a living from copying stuff.

Sony just keeps giving me more and more reasons to be even more excited as the days go by. Gamescom was about a week ago and im already wanting Nov. 15th to get here already!

cool. except it sounds like you always have to set your ps4 to sleep mode before leaving. and people will probably only be using this feature a couple of times before they realize how much money they're blowing on online stuff.

DoUbLeZzMk2
DoUbLeZzMk2

@blue_shift_91No offense intended but that doesnt make sense, if its on u can download it yourself, if its off aka Sleep/Standy mode it will wake up and download the game itself then go back to sleep! What cash are they Blowing thats the cash they are using to buy the game? im confused bro lol XD

blue_shift_91
blue_shift_91

@DoUbLeZzMk2 @blue_shift_91

i meant that to make full use of the feature, you'd likely be leaving your ps4 in sleep mode all the time instead of actually shutting it off. unless they've totally replaced the shutdown with the suspend/resume function.

DoUbLeZzMk2
DoUbLeZzMk2

@blue_shift_91 @DoUbLeZzMk2 Sleep mode is the same as PS3's off or standby mode. But PS4 has a sub system while everything else in PS4 is shut down, that subsystem stays awake! Suspend/Resume is different front sleep mode but is also run through this system, background downloads and updats also happen through that sub system man. =)

The Xbots are jealous, saying "This was already done by 360" ... Really? Do not mistake the option to add an item to the library and YOU START THE DOWNLOAD of the game and install, with a purchase process, boot the console, download and installation of the item that is done remotely... Please do not do that anymore, it is ridiculous, just accept the facts.

I already knew this. This is not news.

I love how people are acting like this is an official news drop.

He simply replied to a fans question, so what if you could 'kind of' do this already on another machine? The PS4 has an ON/OFF switch, are you pissed on that as well because you can already do that on PS3?

people are so ignorant

DoUbLeZzMk2
DoUbLeZzMk2

@Armyboy5 Ok well the big picture here is, u can do it through and app on your phone wich a lot more ppl tend to have then Vitas and PSP'si, also pretty cool since this system has much faster download speeds so paranoid ppl dont have to freak out because there system in on when they arent there!!! Opinion still stands SWEETNESS!!! XD lol XD

And when you buy an xbox  you get to be spied on by the gov. Cops scanning license plates, The Gov getting meta data from emails and phone records, so yes they could and would spy on your entertainment device if you bought a spybox one. Yes, they reversed policies, only because the public refuse to be good little sheep...but it will come. If they had the intention to start with, they will inevitably follow through with it...and that is a good reason to go with the PS4.

jecomans
jecomans

@trugritz You know there are a ton of completely legitimate reasons to prefer a PS4, too?

trugritz
trugritz

@jecomans @trugritz

Yes, more powerful hardware, great graphics, great exclusives, a great new controller... I am aware of it. I am choosing the PS4  for these reasons. Microsoft is a corporation who is fueled by greed and wants all the info they can garner in order to improve their bottom line...at the expense of their customers...that is why they want to be an all in one entertainment device so they can gain everyones info...the gamer, the movie watcher, the smartphone user...sorry, but if I am not interested in getting up in front of a camera to act like I am bowling, or batting or dancing....if I wanted to do that, I would do it for real...when I play games I want to sit down and chill.....so PS4 is the way to go for me.

DevilDog982
DevilDog982

@trugritz If you are dumb enough to think that sony isnt just as greedy as Microsoft you are truely in denial. Just saying, I have no love for the connect but you are incredibly paranoid, I highly doubt the government cares about you sitting in a chair half naked eating cheetos playing a video game or watching netflex.

tightwad34

I sure as hell wouldn't want my system turning itself on when I'm not there. It's not just the people that would be there, but I have a hard time trusting machines when I'm not around to control them, even if you can turn it back off, or into "sleep mode".  And there's always the possibility that you won't make it back.
