PS4 Camera "severely supply constrained"

Sony's Chris Norden says company underestimated demand for the peripheral, which has sold around 900,000 units to date.

by

The PlayStation Camera for the PlayStation 4 is currently "severely supply constrained," Sony's Chris Norden said today during a presentation at the Game Developers Conference.

Norden, a senior staff developer support engineer at Sony, said the company underestimated demand for the peripheral. He also revealed that the camera has an attach rate of around 15 percent--that's about 900,000 units. The PS4 has sold 6 million units.

The PlayStation Camera is proving hard to find, as it's sold out as numerous retailers. Norden said "please be patient," as Sony works to replenish supply, though it's not clear when more units will be available.

Unlike the Xbox One's camera, the Kinect, the PlayStation 4 Camera is not included with PS4 units. It is sold separately for $60, though GameStop recently raised its price by $10 to $70.

How funny this ended up being in such high-demand.  Glad I got mine before launch.  It's a great camera and is wonderful for broadcasting.

hahaha look at all the Xone fanboys in this comment section.

I dont know why anymore would want this or the kinect.

See the kinect does more than just play only games. So right now there are no really good kinect games right now. But that's to change in the future.

Wow ps4 people tried to convince xbox people that the mandatory kinect was bad. Sony people need to stop with the xbox1 hate and embrace innovation. How is sony supposed to innovative if it get scared when you guys bash the kinect. Which is still better than the sony camera but the camera can be also better if you guys stop complaining and let sony innovative.

Wouldn't it be great if a company just included a camera with their system...

So the same people that complain about an X1 coming with a mandatory camera....want a camera for their shiny new PS4. It must be opposite day, next thing you know Killzone will be revealed to NOT be 1080p and 60fps.

Lmao... Wow who would have guessed that by all the hate these cameras get.

I thought one of the reasons folks bought the PS because they DIDN'T want a camera with their new system....

No matter how well it sells, Sony will still support it badly, just like all their other peripherals.

That's a surprise - seems like Sony's Playstation subsidiary itself did not have high expectations for this particular product.

What is the ps4 camera used for? Video chat? Gamer pics? Naughty chat roulette sessions?

Xboner: "Xbox, go home."

PS4 owner: presses home button, at home before Xboner finishes saying Xbox

@eternal_napalm Xboner: Presses button as well to do the same thing, but has additional options of getting there.

Xboner: "Xbox, go to Battlefield 4"

PS4 owner: presses buttons to get to game far after it is already loaded on Xbox One

Notice how your little joke can be rearranged to suit Xbox One owners?

@Stevo_the_gamer PS4 users to gamers: Kinect is the thing that NSA uses to spy on you.

Xbox One users to gamers: The PS4 camera is also on the NSA hit parade!!

NSA to gamers: WE do not care either way because we already watching you from your smartphone camera, HDTV, and PC it is just another tool to get in HAHAHA!!

@callum212 yeah but unless they have cash who'd buy on credit from your store now?

@b74kd3th No having choice is a wonderful thing. Not that you'd know about so stop reading off of M$'s cue card.

@b74kd3th  I think the majority of the complaints was the camera being forced not on the actual device itself.

So does everyone here live in a major city or what. There are ps4s in every store that sells them in Minnesota.

@cvantu @eternal_napalm

Funny. If you don't have the PS4 camera, the voice recognition works through any headset as well. Another thing, if you were running the BF4 and now you navigating the home screen, no matter where you are you could just press the PS button twice (quickly) and you go back to the last application (on this example BF4). So no matter how you sliced, the PS4 navigation is really quick.

Target Australia is not affiliated with Target in the US at all. They just own the naming rights

Yeah they're pretty pricy in our stores but still beats eb games and gamestop pricing anyday

@RicanV @b74kd3thMy biggest problem with Kinect is the NSA spying on me because I do not use Kinect for watching TV. I also highly doubt that Sony has their camera locked down either from the NSA either, so gamers BEWARE!!

cvantu
cvantu

@RicanV @b74kd3ththe majority of Sony fans just rationalize everything into one simple logic:

Sony = good

Microsoft = bad

If Sony went through with "forcing" the camera, then Sony would somehow be rationalized on providing a value to customers. Having the Kinect included with the Xbox One is no different than forcing DVD, Blueray, additional gimmicks on controllers, and so on. It's part of the system package.

@Triton @cvantu@eternal_napalminteresting...I live in Columbus Ohio and can find PS4's pretty much anywhere as well. So basically...everyone wanting a PS4...just come to Ohio.

cvantu

@jocaju that is great and all, but I can go to any application and game without ever needing to sift through a list. I can also snap applications I want without ever leaving a game. I bet I can jump through 5 apps/games before you can get by two. Not that it matters, but don't argue about quickness when it's one of Xbox One's better features. Your argument holds no weight.

cvantu

@TitanPolaris @RicanV@b74kd3thwell, you better throw out all of your internet capable machines that come with a camera. I really hope you don't carry a cell phone around where the NSA knows where you are at all times, can peer through your pics and videos, spy through your camera, listen to your phone calls, sift through your messages, peruse your voice mail, and know what you're doing at the exact locations and time of days.

"Interesting viewpoint. On the other hand I haven't really seen a great Kinect game."

Which is all the reason to have every Xbox One owner to have a Kinect. The Kinect is already demonstrating uses aside from just motion gaming. Project Spark allows motion capture ability. That'd be great in sports games that have character creation systems and even in role playing games. The face scanning in Kinect Sports is something that can be further utilized.

I think it is clear that the Xbox One wasn't ready for retail, but the Kinect will begin to be utilized and it will already have a huge install base. The PS4 camera will see an end to its future. 15% of PS4 owners will not be nearly enough for developers to spend additional time for PS4 camera support.

@RicanV @b74kd3th    Sony gives you the option of getting the camera and Microsoft forces you to get the camera.  I like options.

@tom2750 @RicanV@b74kd3thSome guy was undressing his girl on a livestream while running the playroom game. I also saw a girl bouncing her ass in front of the screen so the little robots would jump on it haha.

RicanV

@b74kd3th @RicanV  Sony decided to let the product sell itself and people responded positively Livestreams seem to be entertaining for plenty of folk (that one guy got out of hand) and the playroom seems neat.

Both of the camera functions right now are just gimmicks though. There are no real games for it and that's why Sony was smart not to press it.
