PS4 Boss Hopeful That New Tomb Raider Won't Be An Xbox-Exclusive Forever

PlayStation worldwide studios boss says, "I hope the game will come out eventually on PS4."

Upcoming action game Rise of the Tomb Raider is currently confirmed to launch in holiday 2015 only for Xbox 360 and Xbox One, but Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida is hopeful the game will come to PlayStation some day. While it certainly sounds like the game will be released for other platforms later on, speaking with Eurogamer at Gamescom, Yoshida acknowledged that this decision is not up to him.

"That question has to be asked to Square Enix and Microsoft," Yoshida said. "I hope the game will come out eventually on PS4. But how can I tell?"

A week ago today during Gamescom, Microsoft announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider would be an Xbox-exclusive for holiday 2015. This phrasing left open the possibility that Microsoft's deal with Square Enix was only for a timed-exclusive, and Microsoft has since confirmed that indeed Rise of the Tomb Raider's Xbox exclusivity "has a duration."

Rise of the Tomb Raider is a direct sequel to 2013's Tomb Raider reboot, which was released on both Xbox and PlayStation platforms, as well as PC. Some Tomb Raider fans were upset when Microsoft announced the exclusivity deal last week for Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Yoshida says he didn't have any inside knowledge about this deal going down.

"We didn't anticipate something like this would happen," he said. "How could we know?"

Yoshida also says he heard gamers' opinions about the Tomb Raider exclusivity deal. "In general, there are lots of people who are angry, who emotionally reacted to the announcement," he said. "Some people created an image saying negative things, like the end of Tomb Raider. It was a very emotional response."

Microsoft and Rise of the Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics maintain that the deal will help elevate the Tomb Raider franchise. The deal between Microsoft and Square Enix, according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, is a win/win situation, and not an attack on PlayStation fans. Signing Rise of the Tomb Raider as an Xbox-exclusive for next year will also help Microsoft better compete with Sony's 2015 game Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Spencer said at the time.

Only one year of exclusivity would do enough damage on Sony profit. Well, it's quite a genius strategy to push Xbox One sell. I must admit it. However, this very strategy definitely was an attack that outraged hardcore fans which could backfire both Microsoft and Crystal Dynamics.

its good for this to be an xbox exclusive, as most xbox exclusives come to pc, ps3 and ps4 exclusives have never really ever came to pc, xbox for example had titanfall come to pc, and deadrising 3 is now coming to pc, the pc/steam community really seems to share games between eachother, like smite, space engineers, and goat simulator (some of the popular pc indie games coming to pc late 2014 and early 2015)

I have a ps4 but this is good for the xbox one. I mean, besides Halo 5 at the end of 2015 , what other exclusives does it have in 2015?

Seriously, although I played every Tomb Raider on PC with keyboard/mouse, it'd still be better than the current situation if Sony got it as their exclusive, which probably would lead to a possible extermination to the PC release though, but anyway it's better than making it XBOX exclusive considering how shabby the console is.

Square Enix has already said that this game is a TIMED EXCLUSIVE!

Hope this comes to pc eventually. I'm horrible at aiming with sticks, hitting everything else than the wolf coming to eat me

Great, so it'll be "optimised" for the xb-one and then ported to pc/ps4. Wonder how many features they are gonna have to cut to make it "best" on xb-one.

I hope Rise of the Tomb Raider is in a Titanfall type situation where even though Microsoft had console rights as PC version was able to come out at the same time.

Please Microsoft, take a beloved franchise and turn it into a 792p mess.

i could care less about Tomb Raider, Uncharted will be the game to play.

As a proud Xbox One/PC owner, I like this deal. It serves Sony fans right, Sony bought exclusivity on Bloodborne, which is in my honest opinion the same exact situation! Bloodborne is basically another Souls game which have been Multiplatform! The Souls series is one of my favorite series and Sony had to go buy complete exclusivity for it, I would have been fine with it being a PS4/PC game...but no, they did the SAME EXACT THING AS MS WITH TR! Both companies are playing dirty and thats it. Period.

this is actually ironic. back in the 32-bit era, tomb raider 1 came out for both the sega saturn and ps1. after that, sony got exclusivity rights for the tomb raider games. not sure when it expired but its funny that theyre on the negative end this time around.

This was the best game in 2013. Even better then TLOU. I was pissed they announced Xbox exclusive. Tomb Raider just feels right with a PS controller in your hand.

Is not Tomb Raider the game that Square Enix said it was a failure when it sold over 3 million copies on the 360 and ps3? There is no way the sequel comes even close to those numbers on just the xbox one, let alone on both the one and ps4. It probably needs to be on last gen as well.

@mattress805. Quantum break. Probably scalebound. I'm sure there is more but those two popped into my head

@VenkmanPHD That could very well mean that its timed exclusive to X1 for holiday 2015 and that it will come to PC later but no one has show me anything that said its EVER coming to PS4

@VenkmanPHD There's a chance it could mean it will come to PC and not PS. (I certainly hope that's not the case)

@DefconRave Has any ps4 game had a feature in it that the Xbox version didn't? I can't think of any. Tomb raider had head tracking in certain sections and the ability to change weapons via voice control that was not in the ps4 version though

@DefconRave im not sure 100% but I don't think you can port from DirectX (xbox - windows) to openGL (ps4).

@lordjibby @jack00 @Snapdragon1 @kadaverhagga @BigBossWato @imadqamar @krcudi85 @yngsten @larry_wright you know, if you really want proof of tomb raider 1's exclusivity, try something called google, id be surprised if there wasnt any evidence online of the deal. believe me i know, i was a huge sega fan while they were in the console biz and was enraged when i found out tr 2 wasnt coming to the saturn in the united states because of sony buying exclusivity rights for the game (i do believe they bought the rights for 3 as well, and this is console rights, pc versions still were available). also, most importantly, you do know that im talking about the original tomb raider trilogy right? the ones that came out in the mid to late 1990's? this was while the main three competing consoles were the ps1, saturn, and n64. not sure if some of you kids might be too young to remember. this was core's tomb raider, not crystal dynamics. i really wish eidos or square wouldve officially gave even a slight change to the name to avoid confusion between the different styles of tomb raider games. just calling it "tomb raider" just set it up for all kinds of confusion and conflict between younger and older gamers.

larry_wright
larry_wright

Correct me if I'm wrong but Demons Souls was a Sony exclusive. This is basically another Demons Souls. This in no way is the same thing. Tomb Raider has pretty much always been multiplat that's why PS fans are so angry. I admit I was angry but since my brother will have an X1 I'll still play it regardless if it comes on PS4 or not. I do agree that buying exclusivity for 3rd party games needs to stop and only hurts real gamers.

@lordjibby

Except Bloodborne ain't part of a beloved franchise spanning multiple generations of platforms. All though being made by the same developer creating the Souls Series, it ain't a franchise so no, in my opinion, not the same exact situation.

krcudi85
krcudi85

@lordjibby I think your the only one that cares about Bloodborne. As for the Playstation exclusives they are exclusive because they are originals e.g Infamous, The last of us, etc. Tomb Raider was created as an original for PS1. Whats next for Microsoft are they going to try to make the next Mario game an Xbox1 exclusive?

BigBossWato
BigBossWato

@lordjibby How is that the same situation every TR game since its inception has been on a PS console, while Bloodborne is a new IP with no other ties to previous games in that series, also not all Souls games have been multiplat because if you remember correctly demon souls was a PS3 exclusive. Furthermore this does not hurt Sony fans in general but more so TR fans that do not own and/or cannot afford to own more then one console. this is a terrible deal and SE only stands to lose money in the long run if it does not come to other console, because there are not many people out there who would by a console for just one game that interest them.

jack00
jack00

@lordjibby  If you want people to take you seriously I advice to never start a post with "As a proud owner of X console". Right there you lost all sense of credibility.

Secondly, this isn't even remotly close to bloodborne being exclusive. Hidetaka Miyazaki is making the game for ps4 because HE choose to make it on it. That partnership started with Demon's Souls who came out before Dark Souls. Hidetaka is just returning to his roots while MS is just buying games who ALWAYS have been multiplats.

Gotta love people talking out of their as s... -sigh-

panathatube

@KimCheeWarriorX There were PC versions as well so it was not an exclusive. There were no Sega Saturn versions, because Sega Saturn's sales were not satisfactory (to say the least)

BigBossWato
BigBossWato

@KimCheeWarriorX  That is not entirely true because most Tomb Raider game from one on came out on PC as well, there for it was not exclusive.

alightningboldt

I agree it was one of the best games of last year. However, I played it on Xbox one first and then on ps4 when it was free. It feels right with both controllers

grenadehh

@divinejester Yes but it sold 3 million in the first month, then another 4 million, then they released it on PC XB1 and PS4 and now it's up to about 6 million. They said "Waah we didn't see profits for 1 year".

sniperwol_basic
sniperwol_basic

@sirchick @DefconRave Well API don't mater. This is done in game engine. So they will not make it from scratch. They have to code some parts but not all of them. So you can say it, it can be ported to other platforms easily. Sorry for my bad English

sampson3121
sampson3121

@alightningboldt sure why not, but like i said i want Uncharted, Tomb Raider is well...ok i guess.

just don't get the whole exclusive thing when it comes to TR, we have an even better exclusive called Uncharted. and it's a real exclusive not bought out like ms. I'll play TR when it comes out later on for the ps4.

kadaverhagga
kadaverhagga

@krcudi85 That is wrong actually. TR was first released on Sega Saturn and shortly after on the ps1 and dos (PC). It has always been multiplat even though the biggest installbase has always been PS.

@krcudi85 @lordjibby
I care about Bloodborne... I just dont agree with LordJibby because he is obviously stupid.

Here is a small example: Amazon had Rise of the Tomb Raider as a ps4 game. All the first news and teasers expected the game to be a cross platform game. Tomb Raider 2013 was upgraded for the ps4. Gamespot (this website) listed the game as a ps4 game.

BloodBorne was known as project beast and since its begining it was a known sony exclusive. Nobody ever expected it to come out for the xbox.

Regardless of how you look at it its fairly obvious that at a certain point someone said: "Right, stop coding for the ps4 we got a bundle of money to make this exclusive for the xbox!"

As far as it goes, up to now Rise of the Tomb Raider is the only thing making me wonder if I shouldnt buy an xbox one. I already have a ps4, ps3, xbox360 and a wii and I always knew i would end up buying the xbox one... now apparently there is a reason.

Low blow Microsoft, but genius move

You seem to forget I said Xbox One/PC, not just "X console" and second, The fact that you're trying so hard to make it sound like Sony didn't buy out From is just astonishing. You can't tell me that if Sony had not paid From that they would have not been on all platforms (Minus Wii U...obviously) You're an obvious Playstation fanboy so I'll not argue whether or not Bloodborne should be on Xbox or not, but seriously, no PC port?

I know this whole article is swarming with Playstation fanboys, but you got on my case about losing all credibility when I said I was a proud owner of an Xbox. When you're so blatantly a PS fanboy, don't you lose all credibility too?

And by the way, just because I own an Xbox does that mean I'm a fanboy? Nope. I prefer my PC over anything, I just chose the Xbox One for the few games I enjoy more on console (Along with the Xbox Exclusives)

In all honesty Microsoft AND Sony are trying way too hard to be the "#1 Console" and in the end it's just hurting gaming, not helping it.

@jack00 @lordjibby and you know him on a personal basis right? lmfao sony's always been notorious for buying out exclusivity rights since they did so with tomb raider 2 which is why the irony of another company now buying out the tomb raider rights from under them is so bittersweet. go ahead, analyse my grammar, make personal insults, say whatever negative things you want about my character but it wont change the fact that what i say is true

@sampson3121. Ok... the Xbox also has quantum break, scalebound, and halo 5 in 2015. Just because a system has great exclusives doesn't mean it it can't have other great games. Tomb raider (2013) was a really good game imo. Ignoring the timed exclusive thing, not caring about ROTTR just because uncharted is also coming out on ps4 is just weird

kadaverhagga
kadaverhagga

@lordjibby If MS made a deal with CD to make a new IP as an xbox exclusive, that would be the same. What you said is like me saying:

"Microsoft bought exclusivity on call of duty, which is in my honest opinion the same exact situation! Titanfall is basically another call of duty game which have been Multiplatform!"

It is made by some of the devs including one of the most important call of duty devs Vince Zampella. And before you say but there still are call of duties out there. Yes but there will still be Souls games out there aswell. One does not exclude the other.

See your logic? And you can't say shit hit the fan for that one. Why because people know it is a new IP.

But to take a multiplatform franchise with a multiplatform fanbase with and not even just doing "another game within the franchise world" but to make the direct sequel, the continuation of the story to the last game that is available to all, is not the same thing.

It is sad your alliegence to an electronics brand fills you with such hateful pride that you are a console fanboy first and foremost instead of a gamer that thinks ahead. You gain nothing but the ability to gloat at sony fanboys wich in turn shows us that you are no better than them. Not thinking of the vast majority that are just non fanboy gamers and want to experience the continuation of the story on the console they have.

I have the x1 so I can get TR anyway but if TR was in fact a full exclusive and this practise catches on, xbox gamers who are fans of a multiplatform game will miss out next time. And this goes both ways, I expect Silent Hills to end up on the xbox platform just as I expect TR on the ps. Once it goes multiplat it should ALWAYS be multiplat.

Franchise/game fanbase before console fanboys!

@KimCheeWarriorX @jack00 @lordjibby Here we go... Just about every exclusives from Sony comes from their first party developpers, where the fk are you going with Tomb Raider II ?? It was made for the playstation and PC, it couldn't of came out on any other platform since there were no other fukin platform that it could of been made on. And what is it with me knowing the guy on a personal basis ? I didn't comment on him, but I guess people see what they wanna see right ? Not only you can't write but you can't read...

Still feeling smart and righteous there, son ?

@imadqamar. Titanfall was a new ip, but that didn't stop all of the ps4 haters from calling it cod with mechs. Jibby is saying it is very similar to other souls games. That's not a bad thing though
