According to data from Gfk Chart-Track, the PlayStation 4 is now the fastest-selling console ever in United Kingdom history, ending the PSP's eight-year record and passing the launch-week sales of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox One.

Chart-Track's "weeks" end on Saturdays, meaning the sales data for the PS4 and Xbox One--which went on sale on Fridays--only accounts for units sold in a 48-hour period.

Specific PS4 unit sales figures for the UK were not provided, though trade site MCV reports that Sony sold more than 250,000 PS4 units during the system's first 48 hours on sale, generating roughly £87 million during the period. This compares to an estimated 150,000 Xbox One units sold during that platform's first 48 hours in the UK.

The PlayStation Network struggled to stay online following the PS4's launch in the UK on Friday. Sony even temporarily disabled the option to redeem vouchers through the PSN in an effort to ensure a smoother experience.

The PS4 sold more than 1 million units on launch day in North America alone on November 15, while the Xbox One moved the same figure during its launch day across 13 territories on November 22.

Call of Duty: Ghosts returned to the top-selling spot in the UK software charts for the week, outperforming FIFA 14, which claimed the second spot. Battlefield 4 held the number three position, ahead of PS4-exclusive Killzone: Shadow Fall at number four, while Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag took the fifth spot.
