PS4 beats Xbox One at UK launch, becomes region's fastest-selling console ever

Sales of Sony's new console estimated at 250,000 units, well ahead of the Xbox One's reported 150,000 systems.

by

According to data from Gfk Chart-Track, the PlayStation 4 is now the fastest-selling console ever in United Kingdom history, ending the PSP's eight-year record and passing the launch-week sales of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox One.

Chart-Track's "weeks" end on Saturdays, meaning the sales data for the PS4 and Xbox One--which went on sale on Fridays--only accounts for units sold in a 48-hour period.

Specific PS4 unit sales figures for the UK were not provided, though trade site MCV reports that Sony sold more than 250,000 PS4 units during the system's first 48 hours on sale, generating roughly £87 million during the period. This compares to an estimated 150,000 Xbox One units sold during that platform's first 48 hours in the UK.

The PlayStation Network struggled to stay online following the PS4's launch in the UK on Friday. Sony even temporarily disabled the option to redeem vouchers through the PSN in an effort to ensure a smoother experience.

The PS4 sold more than 1 million units on launch day in North America alone on November 15, while the Xbox One moved the same figure during its launch day across 13 territories on November 22.

Call of Duty: Ghosts returned to the top-selling spot in the UK software charts for the week, outperforming FIFA 14, which claimed the second spot. Battlefield 4 held the number three position, ahead of PS4-exclusive Killzone: Shadow Fall at number four, while Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag took the fifth spot.

I dare say that the PS4 will outsell xbone in europe/asia and xbone will outsell PS4 in America/Canada.

Only time will tell.

@mos2000 Sony has outperformed Microsoft in the UK you say? Hmmmm yet another one of Uncle Sam's ickle insular foot soldiers I assume hahaha what a know nothing melt you are sir! I have not seen any figures recently but from past figures and going by personal friends and all their kids I would suggest it's more likely the Xbox that has a 3:1 ratio on the Playstation in our United Kingdom of Great Britain AND Northern Ireland. I can't speak for the catholic southern Irish republic because that's a foreign entity that tends to go against everything the UK does......probably has something to do with what their priests do to them in those confession box things papes have.

If you are trying to tar the UK as all of Europe go drown yourself in the bath or something because it shows how ignorant you are of everything on this side of the Atlantic. Politically and culturally we are the isolated 'problem children' of the European Union, more aligned to the super confused USA than we are to the ridiculous Franco German project that is the 'EU' so you're way way WAY off the mark! You septic tanks drone on about your love for your country and of course that includes supporting American Microsoft over ting tong Sony which is fair enough. Yet you call yourselves 'Irish Americans' or 'Italian Americans' or 'African Americans' zzzzzzzzzz wake up you're simply Americans, end of! I have a British mother and Hungarian father so if anyone has a right to claim two nationalities it is me, yet as proud as I am of my Hungarian heritage I consider myself totally British. I live in Eisenstadt Austria, only 10 miles from the Hungarian border so I have every reason in the world to wave the Magyar flag but I don't because I'm red white n blue through and through. About time some of you silly Americans took a reality pill and realised that just because your great great great grandfather had an Irish wolfhound in 1875 it does NOT make you 'Irish American'!

So back to topic....console wise I have a PS3 and Xbox360 so I am no fan boy. In fact I run Blackberry mobiles as I prefer keypads to touch screen, I have a regular PC, Android tablet and update my ipod touch every time a new one comes out so I clearly have no fan boy tendencies in me whatsoever. I will probably buy the PS4 some time next year, purely based on the fact I did not like what Microsoft were spouting out before their humiliating u-turn on their proposed collection of anti gamer policies for the Xbox One. I have even declined to renew my XBL gold membership on my 360 because of it and have reverted to buying games only on PS3 since(GTAV and Arkham Origins). All this Sony fan boy v Microsoft fan boy bollocks is comical, if you're a gamer you're a gamer so it shouldn't matter one iota. There are clearly many intelligent normal level headed people who suddenly lose all grip of reality to wave a PS4 banner to kick off on Xbone owners and vice versa........what's the matter with you all?????????

This whole PS4 sold the same amount in 24 hours in US and Canada is a bit over exaggerated. What weighs more a ton of bricks or a ton of feathers? A ton is a ton. If Microsoft only allocated for a million consoles worldwide its essentially the same. Sony tried to gain ground in the US first and all it proved is that they will eventually sale the same as current Gen in the same locations. Nothing more nothing less.

The PS3 launched a year after the Xbox 360, it also had a higher price tag and less games. Now the PS3 is in front in sales over the 360. Its really a no brainer the PS4 will outsell the xBone now it has a lower price.. Sony is a likeable company. Microsoft on the other hand, ummm does anyone think they are a great company. full of arrogant A-holes. Please somebody name one person from Microsoft that is at all partly likeable. "Well ahead" ?!? Now that's spin...

This is a region where Sony has outperformed MS 3 to 1 in sales over the past 3 years.  Yet that margin was suppose to be much wider as everyone assumed "no one would buy an Xbone".  This proves other wise.  Is Sony outperforming them in the area - yes.  Does this show some major dominance in an area where the trend was 3 - 1 - NO.  That would be like boasting "The New England Patriots are WELL AHEAD of the local high school team 35-30".

This proves that the site is unfortunately over-run by PS Fanboys.  After the false rage behind the Xbone 1million release day numbers, GS has just given up on providing the facts and data they're given, and feel they must cater to this crowd when possible.  First it's applying release region side notes where not needed, now this.

Fact of the matter is - both systems are selling very well. PS4 is not dominating at this point as much as everyone expected.  Each have a dedicated installed base from last gen that has carried over to this one.  Sony is now winning those that do not pledge allegiance to any console maker - but is making the choice they feel is best for them early on. Their dominance however is not "well ahead" as those like to proclaim. It's a good, pretty much level competition, and you console gamers should be proud of that.

Steady competition brings forth innovation; which both systems need down the road badly...

Consumers aren't as easily manipulated as Microsoft thinks. Sure, there will ALWAYS be fanboys or hardcore fans of a product that will purchase any garbage as long as their favorite brand name is stamped on it, but it is CLEAR that a huge segment of the gaming public isn't thrilled with a contraption that costs MORE than it's technically superior competitor.

Furthermore, it's loaded with gimmicky add ons and hidden costs at every turn. These "features" aren't that revolutionary, and aren't anything that was asked for by the gaming community. At the end of the day, most people who purchase consoles simply want to play GAMES, not multitask and juggle a bunch of apps.

There is ALREADY a device that does most of this. It's the called a cellphone.

This doesn't look good at all for MS as North America and the UK were known to be Xbox regions.   The other remaining significant markets in the world are PS regions.   So the gap will likely increase as Sony releases for other regions.

That being said, it's a marathon, not a sprint.

At 1/5 the population the UK's PS4 sales at 250 000 are pretty much on par with NA sales of 1 million. Yes, I know UK's sales are 2 days vs NA's 1 day, but lets just say an extra 250 000 units were purchased during the second day in NA.

@mos2000 You're quite wrong about the Sony's "outperforming" Microsoft the past three years. That may be Europe's number, where Sony does better than MS, but the UK (what this article is about) actually has more Xbox 360 sales than PS3. The fact that Sony did very well against them (in fact moving 50-60% more consoles) makes it that much more impressive. The only "spin" here is your false statistics :/

Here's a source straight from the "Sony fanboys" here at gamespot:

@mos2000 The problem with your argument is that there hasn't been a new console in the past 3 years. Of course it makes sense that the difference in sales ratio is reduced when more money is being spent. There is, after all, only so much money that people have to spend to go around. But consider this. The PS4 almost kept up with the Xbox One in sales during the first week of the release of each console. Why is this significant? The Xbox One released in over 13 different regions including the USA while Sony's console was limited simply to the USA.Meaning that all of these new sales is just extra credit for Sony and the PS4. They've already crushed the Xbox One within their own home country.

Regardless, It's way too early to be making a judgement on Sony and long term sales like you've done in your post. The reason that Sony has been crushing Microsoft is because they simply offered a better variety of games towards the tail end of the console's life. Microsoft seems like they're making an improvement in this area by edging Sony in exclusive games at release, but whether this trend holds will be a great determinant on how the sales of the Xbox One goes on in the future. But they are not gaining any ground by being mean to indygame companies. This will hurt them going on into the future.

For me, I'm taking a wait and see approach. I don't like Microsoft as a company and this is coming from a network programmer that has to deal with how they nickle and dime potential employees with their certification programs they make you go through. We'll have to see how Microsoft can obtain and keep game developers and how they can acquire and keep small indy-developers. Moreover, we have to see how the wildcard, the SteamBox, does on the market. It has a great potential to cut into the success of both companies depending on how much functionality it eventually delivers upon release. How many games will be available to me? Is it limited to simply indy-games or will I be able to play games like Call of Duty or Rome 2: Total War?

Wait and see.

@Sevenizz GTA V and Killzone :) (yes, I know one is for PS3). And eventually Witcher 2 (yes, xbox 360). I bought my PS4 because I'm pretty confident it will have the games I want (I mostly like third party so not really locked in by exclusives) and I much prefer how Sony treats its customers. And also PS tends to get more the games I like (I'm honestly more of an RPG fan with open mind towards other genres though less towards FPS's and sports games and not a huge multiplayer fan). So just makes sense to get the PS unless Sony fails so hard with it it's going to end up like Wii U (and I think that's not a high chance at this point).

@Sevenizz I know you're probably just having a dig at Sony fanboys, but I'll actually answer your question. I'm having tremendous fun with Killzone Shadow Fall and Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag (ubisoft really outdid themselves with that one). I have no interest in Knack. I got Resogun via PS Plus, which is great fun, but Contrast was weak. I haven't bothered with anything else because I'm juggling my game time with a PS3 and PC gaming backlog, lol

@Sevenizz Well I'm a collector but i felt the need to say what Sony games I'm playing right now considering your  comment seems to have been made to anger the Sony fans, but first on my Xbox one the games I'm playing and really enjoying are Dead Rising 3,Forza 5,Killer instinct (the full Version however the Snes version is better) and Fifa (got it free with my pre order) on PS4 I'm really enjoying Resogun (which is free for PS+ members), Killzone 4 (playing the Multiplayer because the single player story kind of goes down hill after the 4th mission), DC Universe Online as well as a few multiplatform games that i upgraded to from the PS3, and taking advantage of the mistake in your comment (not specifying which sony platform) here's the games i have been enjoying on PS3 just the last few months(there are to many exclusives on PS3 to name them all so the last 6 months or so will have to do), I am enjoying Ratchet and Clank Nexus still enjoying the last of us (on multiplayer i completed the story months ago) GTA 5 (which is slightly better than the 360 version but only slightly no offense to the xbox only faithful i chose the platform most associated with GTA and i was surprised when i learned  it was proved the PS3 version is slightly better ), Batman Arkham Origins (got the PS3 version for the exclusive DLC), Tales of Xillia (massive Game especially when there are other games to play), also there is the multiplatform games i mentioned earlier in my comment (which includes Assassins Creed: Black Flag) and Dragons Crown. Tearaway on PS Vita and that's just the games i liked so there is plenty for Sony fans and for Xbox fans, so why not become a collector everyone it's very easy save some money and you can have all the best games and be a happy gamer and not look like a bunch of bitter jealous gamers, oh and lets not forget Nintendo because it seems nobody notices that when the chips are down they go and pull out some amazing games especially like they have done this Holiday Season (Christmas) they have come up with two games that will go down as classics there's Super Mario 3D World on Wii U which is an amazing game and on 3DS there is the Legend of Zelda : A link Between Worlds which is the best Zelda Game since Ocarina of Time in my opinion (and 3rd all time best after A link to the Past and Ocarina of Time) there are others but those two stand out for me. Happy gaming everyone

@g0ldenpr0pet Silly consoler - I'm a PC gamer.  Neither of these consoles suits my gaming needs.

mos2000
mos2000

@revshawn1 @mos2000With all due respect, there's problems with each main point made above:

- Point 1 "...there hasn't been a new console in the past 3 years. Of course it makes sense that the difference in sales ratio is reduced when more money is being spent." -

Both of these consoles broke records on release day. There was heavy anticipation for both units. I mean BOTH. More so for PS4, but not by a wide margin as so many speculated.  That's my point.

Point 2 "...The PS4 almost kept up with the Xbox One in sales during the first week of the release of each console. Why is this significant? The Xbox One released in over 13 different regions including the USA while Sony's console was limited simply to the USA."

PS4 released in US and Canada friend.  The other 11 regions Xbone released, traditionally have a lower demand for the company than Sony. The trend is 3 to 1.  With these releases, that trend shrunk. That was not suppose to happen because everyone proclaimed that "nobody really wants a Xbone" . That's my point

Lastly Point 3 - "The reason that Sony has been crushing Microsoft is because they simply offered a better variety of games towards the tail end of the console's life"

Sony is not crushing anybody at this point. Last gen xbox still has lead in consoles and overall game sales.  This gen, figures show a 200- 300k Sony lead. That at best for Sony is a 56% to 44% market share between the two. Crushing is two gen's ago when Sony had a 70% to 20% market share lead.  Everybody proclaimed this gen would favor more towards Sony than that.  That has not happened.  That is my point.

Honestly even though I'v played them both - I like neither console at the moment.  None of them provide any real innovation that I can't get from a PC for cheaper.  I'm simply outlining the skewed reporting when the facts and numbers don't match.  I give no future predictions on who wins, I proclaim that no system is better. I do agree with you that the future will tell who comes out on top.

Whoever finally does something innovative, or who stumbles the hardest will decide. Point being like you said, too early to tell. Both are selling well.  Therefore those that proclaim dominance after less than a month of close sales is fanboying. Spinning info to cater to these folks is biased reporting.  That's my point

tom2750

@tigress666 @Sevenizz you just said you don't really care about exclusives then said PS tends to get more of the games you like that would mean you do like the exclusives PS gets which makes sense as Sony and Nintendo consoles always have better exclusives then Microsoft exclusives especially the 360 with its pathetic exclusive list and Sony and Nintendo consoles will start to destroy the Xbox one in exclusives this gen just like they did in previous gens its just a matter of time

Sevenizz

You must have a lot of time on your hands - like, a ridiculous amount of free time. Your list even includes an MMO - that you're 'currently playing'? Insane!

I used to buy all the systems as I too consider myself a collector. But my PS1 gathered dust while I enjoyed my N64 a lot more - my PS2 gathered dust while my original Xbox was my preference, and my PS3 gathered the most dust as I really enjoyed the 360. Every time I get a Sony game - the updates were insanely long, the hyped movie/adventure games bore me to tears (god Heavy Rain was tedious), and I like my 360 as an all in one system with the One looking to repeat it. The transition was seamless.

I hope you and the others enjoy your PS4 - semi equal competition is good for gamers. As for me and Sony though - I'm done. Dust bunnies be gone!

@tom2750 Sony may (I think MS will do well in its own right but I do think there is strong evidence Sony will be the dominant console this time around) but I hate to say it, I really doubt you are going to see Nintendo's Wii U destroy anything. For one it already has the rep that the only thing you can play on it is Nintendo exclusives (or rather that it doesn't have much third party). So if you're not a Nintendo fan, you already aren't interested.

Honestly, I'm 90% comfortable saying the Wii U has failed (not just failing). And I don't mean in that it hasn't won the console war, I mean in that Nintendo needs to start really working on their next console and pushing it as soon as possible so they can give up on the Wii U.

Sevenizz

@Sevenizz Yeah the competition can be a good thing. It may force Microsoft to give more incentives to customers or to just step up their game. Like how they started giving up free games with Gold like PS Plus had been doing. Im hoping to see more stuff like that since they have so many customers jumping ship to Sony. I for one plan to eventually own both consoles (like I did last gen) but right now I'm just gonna get whichever one I come across first. Which will probably be the XB1.

@Sevenizz @noandno dead rising 3 averages 20fps on your under powered piece of shit and some times drops to as low as 15fps and killer instinct is a barely above mediocre fighter kill zone shadow falls is much better then it and resogun (ps4) is the highest rated exclusive on both systems so far plus people can easily play multi plats such as assassins creed battlefield etc until more exclusives come out anyway Sony always ends up having a higher amount of great exclusives then Microsoft and not only do they have more great exclusives but Sony's great exclusives are better higher rated and win more awards then Microsoft exclusives uncharted 2 got a 96 meta critic score i think it as the highest rated game of the ps3/360 era in both exclusives and multi pats and it won over 200 game of the year awards i don't even think any 360 exclusive has won over 20 game of the year awards let alone 200

Right, but presently none of those are available at launch.

@Sevenizz @noandno  ummm probably something uncharted, or infamous, and ratchet and clank. zombies, the undead, occultic games and or followings, are way over done, and fighting games are a dime a dozen. platformers, and action/adventure titles are where it's at.

@noandno Go watch some Dead Rising 3 and Killer Instincts videos on youtube.  If those don't make you salivate as a gamer - I don't know what will.

@Sevenizz @noandno Let's face it. Both console launch titles aren't really good at all.

Although, Forza seems to be nice.
