PS3's VidZone launching in PAL territories on June 11

Music video streaming confirmed for a June launch in UK, Australia, PAL countries.

by

Topping off a strong showing at E3 2009, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced that VidZone will be coming to the United Kingdom, France, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Germany, and Australia on June 11.

VidZone is a music video streaming service that is operated by VidZone Digital Media based out of London. The service is host to more than 10,000 music videos and has licences to some of the biggest record labels in the world (such as Sony BMG and EMI). The cost of running the streams is subsidised by selling advertising banners and running 30-second TV commercials every five songs.

Downloading Vidzone is fairly straightforward. All you need to do is log into the PlayStation Network and download it from the PlayStation Store. Once you've grabbed it off the Net and installed it, VidZone will appear at the top of the music channel on the Xross Media bar.

For more information on VidZone, be sure to check out our in-depth look at the service below.

This needs to come out in North America and no I'm not making a new Europe account to workaround it, forget that mess. I'm talkin about loggin on with my account in the US and downloading it for free from the US Playstation Store. I don't understand the whole Vidzone, PlayTV and One-Seg arguement where one's not annouced and one not in the right format or won't be supported because of how the our Free TV is setup or how the DMB is the tech this was setup for. Well get to work clowns and do what you do best and port the best crap that they thought of first so we're not having to sit over here and only US PSN that's worth anything over here. I mean as far as the Europe goes, stop with the whinin about not having video downloads of movie on PSN, they should be luck for US Blu Ray and DVD releases. How many freakin Euro movies can I get my hands on in stores? You tell me, cause other then Snatch and some old joints I haven't seen much. I'm just gettin sick of releasing Playstation3 tech over here but now there. I'm not talking about the media but the tech. If you make something that's working over here then make it in all major markets. I'm not talking about a 3 world countries. But places like US, Europe, Japan and China, place where their are hundred of thousands of units sold.

I don't have a PS3 yet, have a 360. Not that I hate Sony, just haven't gotten the urge to grab a PS3 yet. Always planned on getting it someday. This alone would make me purchase a PS3, I love stuff like this. Hopefully this will become available in North America. Services like this on PS3...I can't wait to get one and see what else they have in store.

out now (UK). Been on it I'm sure they will keep adding artists in patches maybe every month or so, so they are up to date. Great if you wanna sit back and chill having a break from the games.

This is what I like about Sony. They offer a great online service without having to pay every year like xbox live and they constantly upgrade it. I think they should also alow you to listen to music, without the videos so that there is a bigger range (something a bit like spotify).

sony!=] you give us great online which is free and now you let us have this for free as well. thank you even if its not great :P

This is a great idea. I am all up for it. But I agree with a few people on here. It shouldn't just be Pop music. They should make a specific channel for us Rock and Metal lovers. But anyway thanks Sony :)

Romeric87

A really cool idea but I bet theres no metal on there. I'll use this for parties etc, then get on the last FM when I want some real music! Saying that, a good drool-fest over Beyonce, Lily Allen, etc wouldn't go a miss!

I just wonder if this will include the videos which are from each country or unique to each country instead of just doing worldwide hits

I think people miss the point of this service and which kind of videos people are actually interested in. I'm into rock music and indie and grew up in the brit pop era which has entirely shaped my musical taste however I'd much rather see dance videos and listen to dance music on this service. This is simply because all the indie music I listen to I'd rather just listen to and I already have the CD's whereas this service is mainly for the purpose of party events when you've got a few mates round and want something on the box as well some music. I have no interest in sitting on my own watching music vids so this is perfect.

I hope they have music that is varied and relevent for us Brits & not unheard of foriegn stuff, this sounds great though ,shame about youtube as i finally (to late ) found a way too save their vids.

Okay, I'm not a tech person, really, and so I was wondering if I can use VidZone on a American PS3 in the UK? It says PAL region, but does that means it only runs on PAL PS3's?

This looks suprisingly similar as what the xbox announced only difference the xbox is using last fm an already existing service.

cool. i can see music videos on ps3 after youtube dont show music videos any more. Hope that 10,000 isn't just stupid pop music or RnB.

alex240993

Does sony not realise that if we want free music we should just get we7 or last fm to work no-ones going to care about music videos because theres going to be hardly any of them at least with working music sites we'd be happier

10k is a little 2 less - unless it includes all 2pac, official uk top 20's and more..

Awesome stuff, just in time with the UK's access to music videos on YouTube being shot down. I was hoping for HD streaming but i'll still be happy.

yay, but we still need an eu specific qore service, without the terrible name like playstation plus.

In the scheme of things, 10,000 music videos isn't very much... kinda suggests it'll be mostly pop and this new trend in "alternative" rock, and that crap got old so fast. ...but hey, please the brainless masses.

Kleeyook

10k music videos!? That's too less.

Im glad europ gets everything first from the ps3 unlike xbox, i still prefer xbox live to ps3 online because of friends and the sheer simpleness of it. (wheres the freakin in game private chat sony???) but i still dont think ps3 will be the greatest console for at least another year...:(

@DARTHKA0S ok good point..ur right there but all i'm saying is that you used word 'WORLDWIDE' in there and in the article it only mentioned 7 countries

DARTHKA0S
DARTHKA0S

@Amx1217 I never said that Sony had announced Vidzone world wide and I am well aware that it is only in selected countries, though you have to admit M$ has had Vid based store for more than a year and have only just released it to a few countries, which happen to be mostly in Europe. All Im saying is that M$ use of the word WORLDWIDE is used far too freely, and for us here in AUS Sony seems to atleast involve our region in their plans, a perfect exsample was the worldwide 360 launch which was 4 months late in AUS.

Bhinder94
Bhinder94

OK, Sony have officially come back into form. There doing everything right. And not leaving any regions hanging out of services. PS3 even has more exclusives than 360 now. Anyway, that M$ Facebook announcement was ridiculous. The PS3 web browser has allowed me to go onto that website for 1.5 years. 360 has nothing new now.

sobleck
sobleck

@Amz1217 Now if only microsoft took the time to translate their premium service menus and games in to the respective language of the countries instead of running it through a cheap translator program, maybe then i could respect them. Remember the long delay of sf2 hd remix in the pal region, well did you see the poor language translation in the non english versions for the 360? well that was the reason for the delay in the pal regions, Sony has a quality standard as do their fanbase. Have to say though, they should have released the english version on the uk store immediately.

Amz1217
Amz1217

@DARTHKA0S Actually Sony aren't supporrting WORLDWIDE it only 7 countries, most in Euroupe and if you saw Micrsoft's E3 there premium services are expanding to 18 countries unlike Sony.........

DARTHKA0S
DARTHKA0S

Thats one thing Sony does do much better than Microsoft, support countries other than American. And when they say launch worlwide it means WORLDWIDE not America wide. Though I still struggle with the tiny controller, when they fix their controller I can throw my 360 out, till then 360 still is infront by a nose. Good move Sony
