PS3, Xbox 360 Dark Souls 2 patch fixes bugs and calibrates gameplay

Better multiplayer, less bugs, still hard as nails.

If you’ve been paying very close attention to Dark Souls II, you may have noticed that it was a tiny bit different yesterday after developer From Software released a new patch.

Version 1.03 should fix some issues with multiplayer, a lot of other bugs, and make a few improvements to Dark Souls II’s interface and controls.

The gameplay itself has also been calibrated in a number of ways. If you look at the full list of changes posted to Dark Souls II’s Facebook page you’ll notice that the health and damage of some area bosses has been reduced, but so were a lot of player abilities, so it’s not like the game is suddenly a walk in the park.

The full patch notes:

MULTIPLAYER:

  • Failing to create Multiplayer session no longer disables use of online items, such as White Soapstone.
  • Starting boss fight with the Looking Glass Knight while summoning other players no longer cancels the summoning process.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented some bloodstains, illusions, and messages from being displayed.
  • Fixed an issue where “Unable to participate in Multiplayer Session” could constantly appear.
  • Fixed some instances where the portrait of the person you were summoning was different than the actual character.
  • You will no longer be able to take off Covenant rings while being summoned.
  • Fixed an issue that would cause some summoned players to fall through the ground at Earthen Peak.

GAME MENU / INTERFACE / CONTROLS:

  • Optimized Start Menu and Bonfire Menu performance.
  • Trophy icon for “Holder of the Fort” has been fixed.
  • Controller now vibrates when blocking an attack

OTHER FIXES:

  • Bug involving Drangleic Castle door not opening has been fixed.
  • Fixed an issue that would cause Souls to be lost upon death with the Ring of Life Protection equipped.
  • Fixed an issue that caused some players to fall through elevators while using Binoculars and Magic simultaneously.
  • Fixed an issue causing some enemies being hit by arrows at long distances receive 0 damage.
  • Fixed an issue preventing the Brotherhood of Blood duels from starting properly.
  • Added a message for players that displays after entering the coffin in Things Betwixt
  • Fixed an issue where all of the items and objects in an area would reset (Without using a Bonfire Ascetic).
  • Fixed an issue that didn’t unlock some items from vendors on 2nd and beyond playthrough.
  • Fixed an issue causing the requirements for the Brotherhood of Blood Covenant be 50 too high.
  • Licia’s conditions for moving have been optimized.

CALIBRATIONS:

  • Item “Corrosive Urn” – Strength reduced
  • Weapon Category “Twinblade” – Durability increased

Lost Sinner and Flexile Sentry on NG+ were horrible without magic. Still beat them and even on NG++. All the other enemies and bosses nerfed? Not sure why.

Enough of telling how awesome i am. Came here because i was looking if there is a PATCH for the MURAKUMO, because my backswing often just passes through the enemy like there is no hitbox all of a sudden. Only use it since NG++. If anybody knows, please tell me. Every other weapon is just fine. Never patched anything in the game.

@tokyoe  Hitboxes are still an issue with numerous weapons. I namely notice them on old knights in NG+, Luckily they're so slow it hardly costs you any worry. Either way for a game focused on combat, this is a massive issue that needs to be resolved.

Why did they nerfed Soul Greyser? U get it way late in the game and must have high int. Ur prize should have been a kickass magic for hours of play. Its also slow so it should be powerful. I did 700+ dmg to giant lord now its 400+? Why fromsoftware why?

Gopstop22

why the fuck they havent nerfed magic? i been watching streams dark souls 2 all i see is caster users  either 1 or 2 shot you even if u wear god damn best heavy armors what bullshit is this?

I love how they boosted an already overpowered Sorcery then nerf bosses that are already super easy.

i wish i could still summon for co-op, i don't really need the help but i want my 30 sun medals. i was in ng and was seeing signs often for just about any boss but now in ng+ I'm now at the final boss again and haven't seen a single sign not even sun dudes offering help. i would like to say that my sl level is not the problem (191) and a soul memory of 5.5 M as i would assume others in ng+... would be at the same level.  i do think this souls game is easier that the first two. it still worth playing but it won't take long to finish it.

Gopstop22

@untouchables111  majority dont level highger than 120-150 levels in that gap is pvp so if u leveled more you are in minority

RSM-HQ
RSM-HQ

@Gopstop22 Level 150 is the sweet spot. Not much point leveling higher than that, costs loads and doesn't really give you much benefit in the build.

That said, as I'm aware it's about Soul Memory; not level. So you'll likely still fight players on a much higher level. But won't make much a difference in terms of toughness curve. A level 150 is all you really need.

damn i wanted play this game before they nerfed bosses...but to late already i dont know why would they nerf PVE makes no fucking sense...they shoulded instead focus on god damn broken unbalanced PVP and yet i will proly enjoy this game anyway becuz i enjoyed demon/dark souls ALOT my faovrite top notch games for sure played for years demon souls not borred at all not for a short time even always had fun! dark souls is other story i played that on pc...hackers,hackers  everywhere i just god damn hope they will make better anti cheat system for dark souls 2 on pc...i realy do hope so...

@Gopstop22  Funny how you say PC will be full of hackers.

I ran into one hacker through console had no and n0's in its ID name. Very cheeky hacker. Just waited around taking all my hits taunting for about five minutes then slaps me with twin Shotels once.

nayce54

all you guys complaining about nerfs should have started the game as "Deprived" class. it is hard as shit to play that class in the beginning!

@nayce54  & join the Champions covenant. Makes the game more difficult :)

I have to say i've given this game it's just play for a couple of hours yesterday, and i unfortunately feel my initial intuitions were correct. I mean it just don't "feel" like Dark Souls. The character is in NO way "weighed down" by armor like the last game. In fact he just moves WAAY too fast as compared to DS.

In fact i even lowered my camera setting to the lowest settings, and it's just too sensitive, or "too whiffy" as compared to DS, which just makes the game feel like other Third Person games. The combat mechanics as well as the "feel" and "audio" just seem watered down as compared to the last. I just have the feeling playing it, that it "seems" like DS, but maybe created by another company.

I mean Van Ord did lower the Ratings as compared to it's predecessor from a 9.5 to a 9, but this games a 7.5 at best (which is not to say it's bad, it's okay, but in NO way deserved the hype it got, and my feeling is there may have to be a bit of revisiting of these Reviews). I took it out and went to New Game Plus on DS.

My view is, if you never played DS, and want to experience it, the original DS 1 is the way to go in EVERY way. It's alot cheaper, and you really do get the real DS experience as compared to this. Disappointed to say the least, but not at all surprised.

@jagdedge124 Movement and rolling speed get's impaired at 70%+ now. I felt it was a bit too lenient when I had just started too, but it does really start to affect you as you get better weapons and armour. The camera controls do feel a bit odd at first, but after a while they're a non-issue.

The original beats it, but I still think DS2 very much succeeds in carrying the torch for the franchise.

jagdedge124
jagdedge124

@SillySkeleton @jagdedge124 Well i understand your views, but if you're admitting the original beats it, we have to be intellectually honest here. This game was hyped more than any other i've seen in a long while, and i have to say i'm a bit flustered in actually playing it.

I mean your character running around like speedy gonzalez with all that armor is NOT DS. It's not. It's LOTR or something other, i was playing Legends of Troy, maybe it's along that line, but when my character is moving SO fast, it effects gameplay.

The first boss all i did to beat him was go "ring around the rosie" counter clockwise hitting him in the back given my character was so speedy and jumped like spider man.

I'm sorry, i understand die hard fans want to protect their interests, but the fact is, this game is just not DS, and if there are people who never tried DS, we just have to be honest and recommend the original.

I knew this whole thing stunk to high heaven given Gamspot's schmoozing of it, and when that happens, watch out. DS is a game that sells itself, and when you to have Gaming Sites having to help sell it for them, there's a problem, and now i know why. The game just doesn't stand up to the original, and was waaaaaay overhyped.

SillySkeleton
SillySkeleton

@jagdedge124 @SillySkeleton Most people seem pretty happy with it overall, and I think die hard fans tend to be the most critical when it comes to a new entry into a favourite franchise.

I could use that 'ring around the rosie' strategy against 90% of the enemies and bosses in the original game, so that's nothing new. Perhaps you just wore really heavy armour, or didn't up your endurance much in Dark Souls, because if anything, I feel slower in Dark Souls II.

Being 60 hours into DS2, I can tell you it feels alot like Dark Souls and Demon's Souls to me.

nayce54

@SillySkeleton @jagdedge124glad to see someone sticking up for Dark Souls 2.  The game is fantastic! I am 300 + hours into the game!  It was my first time playing this franchise and started out as a deprived with nothing but a loin cloth and level 0. The game was satisfyingly difficult! Can't believe I found a game more enticing and riveting than "Shadow of The Colossus!"

AMCope
AMCope

@nayce54 @SillySkeleton@jagdedge124Don't get me wrong I'm enjoying Dark Souls 2 but Jagdedge has a point. Most of the bosses feel too easy and aside from the new target tracking enemies have it just feels underwhelming. NG+ having new enemies is a great thing though, also the way you can boost the difficulty up at pretty much any time. Personally I find the despawning enemies to be lackluster. I know what FROM was going for and I think they succeeded in that regard but if were going to be honest trying to farm that certain armor set from an enemy is really the only thing that they shafted most of us on. Overall the game is great but I can completely understand where Jagdedge is coming from, it just doesn't have the same atmosphere or even the "fair" difficulty that Dark Souls 2 had and I'm disappointed in that regard.

AMCope

Dark Souls 1 I mean.

tokyoe

@jagdedge124  it's nowhere near to dark souls one, especially in atmosphere and thoughtful worlddesign,... still a great game with a lot to play. like an arcade version of the first part. very annoying is the cheapness of females in the game. big tits, no brains or class. the stonegirl sounds like she offers herself all the time for no reason. on the blacksmith you can see the most obvious design change. in DS2 he looks like from a comicbook version, nothing like the one in DS1 who actually looked impressive as a character model. Dark Souls has become cheap! Sorry to say, it's still a great game - but not an improvement in style. Feels like a huge DLC.

Dark Souls 2 - Prepare to Gank Edition !

When I place a invasion summon red sign , the peoples summon me BUT they are 3 vs me and all them use estus  . IT'S REALLY UNFAIR ! Why the hell this guy even summon my sign when he not alone ???

Seriously this ruins the whole online experience and it makes harder only for INVADERS and making it easier for HOSTS  . A total dis-balance !

If these guys were having trouble online and scared they should have the only option to use Blue Covenant and Blue Sentinel to help em . << which Blue Covenant is totally useless when they summon phantoms even without covenant to aid em against invaders.

Now they even nerfed (slowed down ) the healing miracles which is only way to heal in invasions in cases the host starts using flasks , life orbs , mushrooms , spell reneval items  etc etc  .This only contributes to educate peoples to make them more ganker .

Yeah I know there are arenas for pvp but cmon they should have given a healing ability at least with a limit or something like this and make invasions more appealing like in dark souls.

They didn't fix anything that I had problem with this game and just made worse :

-As Blue Sentinel covenant  using blue cracked orbs still is giving alot of unable to find world messages and have to spam using them for 10-30 minutes in order to get a single invasion and many times I got invaded during that time :( and if they kill me I have to use a Human effigy (which is super rare)and start the inavsion seeking again .

-Cracked Eyed Orbz are super rare and u cant farm long enough as u know knights that hold em dissapear , at least should not have removed the farming ability (yeah u can bonfire ascetic but it means even more time to kill new high hp and attack knights ) .In new game ++ they cost 10000 per each (probably the only way to buy em) !

- I didnt get summoned at all when I weared the Blue Sentinel ring . Maybe once if I remember correctly before these updates .

-Many times people kill me from 2-5-10 in-game metres without even touching me !

And bosses nerf damnit I don't want to prolong more the list as is comment lol

If that picture up the top does not give someone the urge to play dark souls then they are cold, soulless bastards. (And I don't mean soulless as in no dark souls souls, I mean no soul soul type of soul)

From should've added an "Easy" play-through for DSII and left the original game like the others. Making the whole game easier is a rip-off for those of us who played the earlier games.

I noticed several freezes after I installed the patch. Not sure is the two are related.

One thing I hate is that using a bow in first person view so often lodges arrows into walls etc.

@dinb  I've noticed more frame drops since the patch. & the game was hardly a steady 30fps to begin with.

Hum, I'm at Dranliec Castle, guess I'll keep going offline and then update once I finish the playthrough. I wonder how much reduced the damage on Soul Geyser and Forbidden Son are... Probably the most cool looking in the game...

LoganDaDestroya
LoganDaDestroya

Nerfing bosses is ridiculous considering how easy they are in this game. Lost Sinner was good, but that may be because she was the first of the Big 4 I fought, the rest were dissapointing (especially Old Iron King, the lava pit is more threatening than he is, what on earth were they thinking!?) Then again, her boss design is good in that she doesn't use gimmicks, she is straight up aggressive and pressures you a lot.

And that was me playing on a 100% melee character using a pair of Longwords and a Twinblade, magic and hexes make 90% of it a cakewalk, you can sometimes kill bosses before they even get out of their initial stand up animation. Thankfully they have worked on some of those for this patch so I'll give them credit for that. But then there's aother things like Ultra greatswords attacking way faster than they should, an easily repairable ring of sacrifice, an anti-climatic final boss (The ones for the last two games weren't good fights either, but at least they were symbolic, this one I didn't realise it was the final boss until I beat it), invading being so pointless people barely do it (90 hour playthrough, only got invaded 4 times, and with the odds stacked against them in many ways they don't even get Humanity for their trouble) enemies that despawn after you kill them enough, etc.

It's Dark Souls, I shouldn't need to go out of my way by using Ascetics, joining the Covenant of Champions, wearing the red eye ring and red band to make it feel like a proper challenge.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@LoganDaDestroya  Tried NG+? The only thing they have done to make it harder is add those red summon NPCs everywhere. Including in bosses. So instead of make the boss harder they simply made it a cluster fuck.

Just fought the dude at the end of Sinner's Rise just now and mid game when you are kicking his ass, two magic casters turn up so you have no choice but to either take magic in the back or his two handed sword. I was going to give NG+ more time but I don't think I'm going to if that is the best they can come up with.

LoganDaDestroya
LoganDaDestroya

@dmdavenport @Dannystaples14I went through the game with Wanderer gear from the start to finish, I play agile so never bother with Heavy Armour or Shields.

psuedospike
psuedospike

@LoganDaDestroya  Yea, but Souls games have ALWAYS been this way!  Magic is always OP.  But they added a lot of things that are a ton of fun, like the Bell and Ratbros and the Blue Sentinels to spice up PvP!  PLUS, the two sparring arenas that ppl actually use, I've done more PvP in 175 hours of DkSII than I did in the previous 2 games.

RSM-HQ
RSM-HQ

@LoganDaDestroya  Ha so true, the only time I died to Iron King was back stepping into the small lava pit. Boss was shockingly easy. Luckily NG+ adds minions to make the battles more interesting.
