PS3 sells 30 million across Europe and PAL regions

Cumulative sales of home console hits new milestone in region; total worldwide system sales at 70 million.

by

Sony has sold 30 million PlayStation 3 units across Europe and PAL regions, the company announced today. That figure represents consoles sold to consumers, not shipped to retailers.

In total, the PS3 has accounted for 70 million worldwide sales. That figure, however, represents total consoles shipped and not necessarily sold.

By comparison, Microsoft has sold 70 million Xbox 360 consoles as of October and Nintendo has shifted 97 million Wii systems as of September.

The PS3 launched in Europe in March 2007, four months after it debuted in North America.

Why just not make a "PS 360 DS" ? Hmmm...i dunno, ppl will quickly find a way to fight about what game is better. Too much stupidity plagues the simple minded human brain.

Vita was a failure, Move was a failure, Home was a failure, the list goes on.

Sony, the Playstation Brand is the reason Microsoft and Nintendo resorted to risky and creative decisions to bring consumers to their products. You were the company that nearly made Nintendo go BANKRUPT with the N64 and Gamecube. WHY are you trying to copy them? Stay true to the core gaming audience and loosen the focus on casual gaming. That audience most likely owned Playstation 2's before switching to 360's and Wiis. Terrible marketing strategies and arrogant decisions also contributed to the SCEAs turmoil. Building a cost efficient system whose architecture is friendly to game developers and spending the rest on hype would have saved the PS3. The Playstation Vita was basically their attempt at breaking into market dominated by Smartphones and Tablets.....at least Nintendo was smart enough to brand the 3DS as a standalone toy for the children.

I been with playstation since the Ps1, as an older crowd I don't care for gaming too much.  The PS4 needs to be something more then it is as a media hub, ad improved over the ps3 in features.  Improve the web browser do more non gaming stuff.  Not a computer first person shooter so have no desire for the xbox.  Quaddef or 4k blu-ray bring it for the ps4.

I play most of the games in 360. I play skyrim in PC. Then I play little big planet in PS3.

Please PS3 fanboys, don't get offended. We all know how fragile you guys are.

How did they manage to sell all those systems without RROD?

People keep talking about the gaming industry faltering and fading, but sales numbers for all three consoles disagree with you.

Consoles are strong.  It's PC gaming that's fading fast and eating crumbs at this point.

Best over all aggregate sales of any generation.  Don't think so?  Then you, good sir, are looking at the wrong data.

Very poor sales figures. Considering there are 3 console platforms, people buying their second version of the console after a possible hardware failure and the price drops. 70m around the world is next to nothing. Remember there are near 7 billion people on the planet so putting that into perspective you would have thought that more people would have bought the damn thing. I'm not even sure I will buy a next gen console. My current PS3 may be my last.

I couldn't care less! Don't get me worng, I own a PS3, which I enjoy "deliberately", I've been playing since I got it May last year, it's the best console I had since PS2, never bought so many games in a short period and it keeps getting better for me more and more. Sales' charts are fuel for fanboys (who also like to waste their time discussing this) and, from my point of view, only interests the industry.

The 360 was released a good year before PS3, and with all the faulty 360s Im not surprised they have sold more, its the worst built console ever! even my PSone and SNES still work fine compared to the 2 dead 360's under my bed.

I do. But I play most of my games on X360S if they're available on both systems. And the Xbox 360 exclusives interest me more than the PS3 exclusives. Though I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of "The Last of Us"!

@Supabul i do, but i barely play my xbox360 because there are too many games on ps3 and vita, and 360 only has halo

@cheamo clever marketing.  they actually covered RROD problems for a long time before people started searching for problems online and found a community of people who had the same issue.  microsoft has a army for PR.  anyways,  RROD comes from poor build quality.  poor build quality keeps manufacturing costs down.  cheaper systems will always outsell the more expensive system.

@PixelAddict no offense but you really have no idea about the subject.  they said PC gaming was dying out in the 90s.  But it's been growing and getting stronger. not many educated/informed people are out there.  PC gaming usually offers better sound/graphics than PS3/360 can ever go.  it has been this way for a very long time.  and in game videos being recorded/shown from PC players are now starting to realize, for BEST gaming experience PC is the way to go.one thing people also starting to realize is that, Consoles are TRYING to be like PC.  PC has always been  the "hub" for games, music, movies and TV for years now.  Console has only been catching up recently with offering of services like netflix.

@PixelAddict It's PC gaming that's fading fast and eating crumbs at this point.

Based on what data?

PC Gaming Hardware Market to Hit $23.6 Billion in 2012 Says Jon Peddie Research. In its 33 country analysis of the gamer market, JPR has found very strong demand in the BRIC countries for systems, accessories, and upgrades approaching $4.7 billion in 2012 and growing to $7.7 billion by 2015.

How can PC gaming be fading when PC enthusiast hardware sales are growing and PC game sales are growing?

 @PixelAddict

Uh, PC gaming is in the midst of a renaisance thanks to digitial distribution. I played and enjoyed the "golden era" of PC gaming so you don't need to explain what the reality is.

The 7th generation of consoles has been been fraut with ever higher levels of finanical risk, just look at all the studio closing articles this year and last.

Generation eight can't support three big players in my opinion. Nintendo has a lot of cash but lets see how long they last.  Smartphones will continue to eat away at the portable market which Nintendo has milked for years.

@ACWH Well if you consider the economy (which people complete forget about for some reason) those sales are actually pretty good. When the PS2 sold about 80 million in the same time frame and the economy was much better during that time then now. The original XBox didn't sell anywhere near 70 million units in the 5 years it was out and the economy was better. There are a LOT more people (millions and millions to be exact) out of work all over the world right now, yet 2 consoles sold over 70 million and another sold over 95 million in 6 years. Way more then what the PS2, Gamecube and XBox sold last generation. The numbers are actually very impressive. The 360 sold 3x's what the original XBox sold in Japan. No one expected that with this economy.

deadkingdg
deadkingdg

@ACWH Well taking the world population into account doesn't really mean anything since the very poor countries have a very high population. As for the countries such as the US, the population might be around 300 millions, but count the fact that most households count 2 to 3 persons and most people do not see the point in having 2 consoles of the same console in the house. Then there's all the older people, while they might have bought a Wii when it was a trend, for most of them, like my parents, gaming is still for kids and they keep saying that I'm too old for this.

The total sales of this generation are much higher than the previous generation, which were better than the previous one. I sure as hell don't want to be gaming on an iPhone in 5 years.

blackace

@DeanoFantasy You should have returned them to M$ to get them fixed for FREE. My RROD consoles works just fine now and I got it fixed over 3 years ago. Never had any issues with my 360 Slim. Nintendo consoles are built like a rock. I've dropped my NES, SNES and Gamecube several times an all 3 still work perfectly. Even my original GB, GBC and DS (3DS) work great. My PS1 died after 2 years. Turn it sideways and upside down while playing a game only worked for so long. The PS1 hardware was crap and Sony wouldn't fix them for FREE. The original XBox was solid. Mine still works. The controllers however, were not. Those big bulky controllers broke easily and the cables wore out even faster. The Virtual Boy & 3DO was worth then the 360. You couldn't even play a game properly on the 3DO because the controller was complete crap.

Psychokillaz
Psychokillaz

@DeanoFantasy also 360 was much much less expensive. A PS3 was twice as much and was released a year later with a fail rate of .01%-.03% to 360's 33% to 37% failure rate

MajinSquall

@DeanoFantasy i always wondered if MS count all the consoles people had to re-buy because their original one broke in their sales numbers because they really shouldn't if that's the case because that would mean that there isn't actually that many console out there being played

@natalieyan  @Supabul I'm the total opposite. I have over 150 XBox 360 games and about 35 PS3 games and play my 360 more then anything else. I definite have some incredible games include ALL the HALO games. There's too many 360, DS and PSP games to play. What's a Vita? lol!!

PixelAddict
PixelAddict

@Rocket2Uranus No no, I understand fully.

My PC gives far better resolutions by a fair stretch, for sure.  The gap is getting closer, but PC's still win the beauty contest, no argument there.  But what I am saying is that gaming companies on an increasing scale are developing for the consoles first, and then maybe porting over a PC version at some point.

There are exceptions, sure, where we have PC exclusives.  But there are a lot less now than there were, say, 20 years ago.

By the way, when you use the word "experience" in describing what is best on any platform, you take things away from facts and into personal preference.  You are entitled to your opinion, and I would not say PC gaming is the best experience for certain types of games for me.

Example: someone might say you could have the best gaming experience playing Starcraft.  Others would disagree and say God of War.  Still others would disagree and say Halo 4.  It's all subjective.

So, see, I do understand.  Maybe even more than you.  No offense.  ;)

PixelAddict
PixelAddict

@BestJinjo Look, I agree the OPPORTUNITY is there for PC gaming, but in reality, most devs are putting out games on consoles first, and then *maybe* porting them over at some point to the PC.

That was what I mean with my crumbs comment.

I have a decent gaming rig, and I do some PC gaming, but I see a vast majority of games go console first and look and "feel" better on my 51" plasma than on the 23" monitor and desk (ugh) chair.

@wuushew  @PixelAddict I don't know too many people who play games on their Smart Phone religiously. I was playing Fruit Ninja and Doodle Jump for about 15mins last night however. lol!! I just bought a Samsung Galaxy II S, so I wanted to test some games. In any case, the development companies who are folding make PC and consoles games. Many PC developers are jumping to STEAM because they can't sell their retail shelf games because they are getting pirated to death. Putting them on STEAM helps them to continue to make money over time. Console gaming isn't going anywhere. Microsoft, Nintendo & Sony need to reduce their licensing fees. Microsoft has provided an Open Market to make XBL and Indie games for the 360. I think they need to open it a bit more and give more of the profit to the developers so more companies will climb on board.

If you ever learned about billion dollar company or public company, 70 million sales actually is not big numbers to them, Steve Jobs stated back in 2007 that Consoles market is not worth it, he prefer Computer, TV, or Phone market (which is 1 billion bigger)

as far as I know,, most Big Corporate don't care about being number 2, 3, or 4,, that's how "things" works, investors don't care with 2nd rate Company

All billion dollar company wanted to be the number 1

and currently the number 1 market is smart-phone, tablet, online, digital distribution market.

Back in PS1, PS2 era, Consoles was big and number 1 market,, at those point most big companies left PC to die and move toward Consoles,, but PC cannot died since it's not all about gaming, and If Smartphone / Tablet / Social / Digital Distribution become bigger than Consoles then they will do the same things and move toward the new platform.

Consoles had biggest possibility to died than PC,, since it's dedicated platform, being dedicated tend to died first. that's basic lessons in business.

I personally don't think Consoles will died, but Consoles will be significantly smaller, and in the few years prob Consoles will losing Sony or Nintendo as Big player, maybe you would see PC-hybrid like Steambox, Apple gaming platform or Xbox 1000.

@wuushew  @PixelAddict I don't know about the three big players statement.  They all survived during a period of time that good be arguably labelled the worst stretch of years for the entire global economy.  Unless things continue to slide into hell I can see them all having a place in the long run.  I agree with the smartphone/portable market statement.  It'll be interesting to see how Nintendo deals with the competition.

@deadkingdg@ACWH Yup, using world's population as a whole # doesn't tell us much. More than one-half of the world's people live below the internationally defined poverty line of less than U.S. $2 a day—including 97 percent in Uganda, 80 percent in Nicaragua, 66 percent in Pakistan, and 47 percent in China, according to data from the World Bank.

Nearly one-third of rural residents worldwide lack access to safe drinking water. Countries with the highest population growth rates also tend to be poorer. PS3 is still going for $250+, which is a lot more than most people in the world can afford to spend since you need the console + a TV!

@dnlflinders  True, I think most people have better monitor resolutions than TV... because I would guess there are quite a few people who own a past generation or cheaper HDTV that is just 720p.

As for me, my monitor and plasma are both 1080p.  I just prefer the comfort of gaming on my cushy couch versus the office chair.  And I don't want to spend ridic money on a gaming laptop that will be harder to upgrade than my tower PC.

@Masenkoe  @PixelAddict  @BestJinjo  You don't realize that any pc monitior with a Y resolution of more than 720 is HD? there's no need to fork out for a HDTV when a £100-200 PC monitor will output as good a quality as any TV.

@Masenkoe  @PixelAddict  @BestJinjo lol many people can't have their   computer hooked up to a TV because their computer is in the study room, while the TV is in the family room, living room or entertainment room...

wouldn't make any sense to put your friggen desk with your computer and papers in the middle of your living room dude.. its not a matter of technical aptitude or intelligence, its a matter of interior design and family living

@amazon09  @Psychokillaz I am pretty sure the PS3 FAT fail rate is going to reach 99-100% because it uses lead-free soldering, which means over time the constant reheating and cooling of the PCB/GPU soldering will result in fissures in the substrate and the console is dead without reballing the solder.
